Liveris AO Brisbane Olympic and Paralympic Organising Committee President for Australian Institute of Company Directors July Company Director magazine. Andrew explained his deliberate framing of his "Act Two" life after 40+ years working globally with Dow, 14 years as CEO & Chair & executive chair of DowDuPont. It includes UQ Liveris Academy for Innovation & Leadership arming a new generation of leaders with the cultural fluency, multi-disciplinary perspectives, and depth to help guide regional and global decision-making. Meet Mitch Cook (he's the handsome fella in the photo with me). Eight years ago we both worked at Air New Zealand (I was head of social media for Global Brand, Mitch was a wildly fantastic crew member & superstar of quite a bit of the content we made). We first met IRL on a random Tuesday in Spring aboard an ATR shooting a fun celebration story with the ever-talented Clare Cheyne. As the "elder" on the shoot I could've stayed aloof. Could've "played it cool". Could've remained on the tarmac checking e-mails whilst Clarey & Mitch shot the story. But, "could've" has never been my style. Instead I was right alongside them as Clarey filmed Mitch. We talked through the concept & played around with ideas for the story. We laughed. We mucked up. Tried again. Made content. Made memories. We got the shots on the day. And, along the way, got to know each other. As you can see, running into Mitch randomly at LAX yesterday was a joyous bit of happenstance for both of us. We talked about when we first met. We shared stories since the last time we hugged. We connected deeply. As always. What's the point of this (other than waxing nostalgic & fizzing Mitch & Clarey up)? The point is that everything in life is connection. It's other people. Heartbeats. Moments. Presence. And, everything that builds connection & binds us to others comes from stories. As a storyteller through & through, nothing fires me up more than seeing people where they are. When people feel seen, valued, & understood - they trust you enough to tell you their stories. And, let's be real, if you're in advertising or marketing (or business at all) - then you're in the business of stories. My questions for you today: How often are you slowing down enough to get to know your colleagues? How often are you slowing down long enough for them to get to know you? My recommendation: banter with your work family, ask them open ended questions about them, & listen attentively to their answers. Powerful leaders connect powerfully through compassion & knowing. May you dial both of these up in your everyday!

A few years ago, we helped a client examine the #digitalsector and its #carbonimpact. Discovering that the #digitalsector accounted for 3.7% of global #CO2 emissions, on par with the aviation industry, was quite eye-opening. With the rapid growth of #AI, that figure has certainly skyrocketed 🚀 In our work, we developed five pillars for #transformation, but two stood out for me: - Prioritise measurement - Democratise responsibility. These seem straightforward, but many companies and individuals still struggle to embrace them. ♻ That's why it was encouraging to see "The Cook Up with Adam Liaw," a cooking show on SBS, become the first of its kind to measure its #carbonfootprint and adopt a #greener approach to production. This aligns with SBS's broader goal of achieving #netzero emissions by #2045, with plans to measure carbon footprints across all its programs. SBS's Director of Television, Kathryn Fink, remarked, "This is an important first step to minimise emissions in production and create a #blueprint for future shows." 👣 While more tangible industries like #oilandgas, #agriculture, or #fastfashion attract the most scrutiny, big-budget films can have a carbon footprint equivalent to driving 7 million miles in a car. More numbers need to be measured. 📊 On the responsibility front, SBS's commitment to green practices and sustainability could set an example for others in the industry, leading to broader change. I genuinely appreciate SICKDOGWOLFMAN's brand and their strong opinions, but if all roads lead to "put someone in a mascot uniform", what's the point of having a unique perspective at all? It seems like Australian ad agencies (and their clients) seem to have just three ideas: 1. Mascot or animal costumes 2. Schlubby guys with 5 o'clock shadow debasing themselves 3. Rhyming copy The argument might be "this works" but how does that square with SICKDOGWOLFMAN's "No Best Practices" (https://lnkd.in/gzJ-Gf9C) approach?

In light of recent comments made by Cronulla Sharks halfback Nicho Hynes, I feel compelled to express my support on the matter. Nicho's statement that his "life isn't defined by an 80 minute game of football" has sparked varied reactions within our community. While some have criticised this view, I find it refreshingly honest and important. As leaders in the sport, we must recognise and address a crucial reality: the career of a professional rugby league player is remarkably brief. While some extraordinary individuals may enjoy a 15-year career, many others may only experience a handful of first-grade games. This brevity underscores the importance of players maintaining a sense of identity beyond their on-field personas. I commend Nicho for his courage in expressing this sentiment publicly. His words serve as a valuable reminder that our players are multifaceted individuals with lives, interests, and potential that extend far beyond the playing field. It's crucial to understand that many other traits define our athletes beyond their performance during a match. The trust they build with their teammates, their coachability, and their off-field work in the community – which often goes unnoticed – are all integral parts of who they are as individuals and professionals. Equally important is the love, care, and protection they provide for their families, a fundamental aspect of their character that shapes their lives both on and off the field. These qualities contribute significantly to their overall impact and legacy in the sport. The transition from active play to retirement is often challenging for many athletes. Too often, we've seen players struggle to redefine themselves once their playing days are over. By acknowledging that there's more to life than the game, players like Nicho are better preparing themselves for a fulfilling life after football. Let me be clear: this perspective in no way diminishes the incredible dedication and effort our players put into every match. Rugby league is undoubtedly one of the toughest sports in the world, demanding immense physical and mental fortitude. Our players give their all, every time they step onto the field. However, we must also recognise that a person’s worth isn't solely determined by their performance during those 80 minutes. By supporting a more holistic view of our athletes' lives, we're not only helping them but also enriching our sport and its culture. As we move forward, I hope we can foster an environment where players feel empowered to speak honestly about their experiences and perspectives. It's through open dialogues like these that we can continue to evolve and improve our great game.

Last week, I went to a highly regarded global cultural event to hear some of the world’s best and brightest – and all I got was this pic of me on the toilet. But I have a good excuse – I was so swept up by the calibre of speakers at SXSW Sydney, I didn’t have time to take any more selfies. Super quick takeaways from my eight hours on the ground (which you may or may not want to read while on the toilet): 𝗝𝗼𝗵𝗮𝗻𝗻 𝗛𝗮𝗿𝗶 𝗶𝘀 𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗹𝗹 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗯𝗼𝗺𝗯. Even though I’d read ‘Stolen Focus’, his talk was a big wake-up call. Hari focused on themes around attention, distraction, and how modern society erodes our ability to focus. He believes our declining attention spans stem from deep systemic issues, ranging from technology designed to interrupt us to societal factors like stress and poor sleep. He ended with a rousing call for better regulation of big tech to safeguard democracy. But two practical, right-now takeaways: get yourself a K-Safe (a box that locks away your phone) and download Freedom, an app Hari uses to reclaim precious time. 𝗡𝗲𝘅𝘁 𝘂𝗽 𝘄𝗮𝘀 𝗖𝗵𝗮𝗱 𝗟𝗮𝘄𝘀𝗼𝗻, pianist, podcaster, and certified breathwork coach. Chad shared his passion for exploring the intersection between music and mental wellness, highlighting how music can be a powerful form of therapy. Although Chad has developed music for massive hit TV shows like ‘Vampire Diaries’, ‘The Walking Dead’ and ‘Viceland’, as well as countless ad campaigns, he’s probably now best known for his podcast ‘Calm It Down’, which includes discussions on music, mental health, and performances where he combines breathwork with calming, immersive music that help listeners manage stress and anxiety. 𝗔𝗺𝘆 𝗚𝗮𝗹𝗹𝗼’𝘀 𝘁𝗮𝗹𝗸 𝗹𝗲𝗳𝘁 𝗺𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗺𝗼𝘀𝘁. As an expert in workplace conflict, Amy focused on navigating workplace tension and fostering healthier relationships at work. Key points included her belief that we’re hardwired for likeability, which often prevents us from dealing with conflict effectively. She emphasised that conflict at work is inevitable, but good conflict can lead to better decisions and innovation. Amy also discussed the importance of psychological safety – creating environments where people feel safe to disagree without fear of repercussions. She delved into the significance of giving and receiving constructive feedback in a way that promotes learning, not defensiveness, and highlighted how productive tension (without unnecessary drama) drives creativity and growth. I enjoyed her talk so much that I’ll be ordering her book ‘Getting Along: How to Work with Anyone (Even Difficult People)’.
