It’s official: Bunnings has again been crowned the most trusted brand in the 12 months to March 2024 after returning to the top spot in the final quarter of 2023. The ubiquitous hardware chain has increased its lead as Australia’s most trusted brand as previous leader Woolworths plunged from second spot in the last report, down 32 places to 34th most trusted overall. Rival major supermarket brand Coles has continued its fall from grace, down from the fifth most trusted brand in the 12 months to December 2023 to the ninth most distrusted brand in the current rankings – an unprecedented fall of 221 places in the rankings. According to Roy Morgan CEO Michele Levine, ‘The fate of Woolworths and Coles reveals how quickly distrust can gain momentum and negatively impact a brand’s reputation. There’s an old Dutch saying that trust arrives on foot but leaves on horseback. In other words, trust is slow to win but quick to lose. Australian corporate bankruptcies have topped 10,000 for the first time since 2013, with high inflation and lower consumer confidence as the main contributors. Importantly, though, a surge in total registered businesses means the ratio of failing businesses remains lower than it was a decade ago. “Given that more than half of new firms close business and exit within the first three years, it’s plausible to infer that a substantial proportion of these younger and smaller entities are now exiting due to insolvency,” says Associate Professor Evgenia Dechter, School of Economics, UNSW Business School. “However, there is evidence that the unfavourable economic conditions also affect the more established firms.” Will the underlying economic conditions contributing to insolvencies improve anytime soon? With the twice yearly four-day Afterpay Day sale taking place earlier this month, thousands of retailers across Australia took advantage of the “buy now pay later” online service, and according to Afterpay, revenue grew by more than 23% in the 2023 sale. 📈 Learning through hands-on experience 📈 Over the past three years, I have worked as a shop manager in our family furniture business. It has been an incredible experience and allowed me to gain valuable skills I will continue utilising. My role goes beyond managing the storefront, and I've gained hands-on experience in logistics, and team leadership. This includes organising pick-ups and deliveries, as well as devanning containers. Every aspect of the supply chain is efficiently managed to allow for smooth operations. Key Skills Developed: 🔹 Retail Sales: A large part of my job includes making sales inside the showroom. This has taught me how to deal with customers effectively and ensure they are satisfied with their products. This is a critical skill as more individuals are looking for an experience while shopping. 🔹 Team Leadership: Overseeing the team has allowed me to improve my communication skills and be a better team leader. I understand people's abilities greater, allowing for a more significant delegation of tasks to increase productivity. 🔹 Logistics Planning: Organising pick-ups and deliveries includes vast coordination and attention to detail. You must understand where every employee is situated, which allows you to keep operations running without disruption. 🔹 Problem-solving and Adaptability: The entire operation can include its own set of challenges and issues. From product delays to unhappy customers, you must be able to relax the situation. This has allowed me to make faster decisions and work better under pressure. The retail union, SDA, is using Labor's new multi-employer bargaining laws to push McDonald's to negotiate its first collective agreement in over a decade. Despite being highly profitable, McDonald's only offers award minimums, denying workers a collective say in their pay and conditions. SDA SA Secretary Josh Peak highlighted the importance of fair pay, stating 'McDonald’s workers deserve more than the bare minimum.' This historic move affects over 5,000 workers in South Australia and could impact stores nationwide. More than that, it’s a crucial step towards embedding the new laws – fought for and won by union members – to help workers in many industries secure better pay and conditions moving forward.
