About
Much of my career has involved managing, or helping others, manage risk. From working as a psychologist in employment and selection to steering the growth of a disability organization through the turmoil of the NDIS - my work has always involved making decisions that are inherently risky.
But as Niccolo Machiavelli wrote in The Prince "All courses of action are risky, so prudence is not in avoiding danger (it’s impossible), but calculating risk and acting decisively. Make mistakes of ambition and not mistakes of sloth. Develop the strength to do bold things, not the strength to suffer." So I have never been scared by accepting that all my actions have a result.
In my current role as CEO of Nexus Inc I have seen the business grow from 80 to over 400+ staff and quadruple our turn over. We have evolved from not only an outstanding service organisation but to an excellent social business providing life changing services to individuals. Nowhere has the risk-opportunity trade off being so apparent than in the Australian disability sector since the introduction of the NDIS.
I have been lucky to have had a varied career from public servant to consulting in management and research (social and market). During my consulting I was able to see inside many companies and government bodies helping them to move forward based on evidence and prudent decision making.
I have strongly supported community sector organizations to adapt and be responsive to client needs as well as being a Board member of a number of social organizations. As a society our very fabric is placed at risk by disadvantage – those who feel they have no hope will act as if there is no tomorrow. As a manager of government services that supported children and youth I saw the every day impact of disadvantage. As CEO of Nexus Inc I also meet a cohort of clients who have had their lives changed (for the worse) by their early experience of disadvantage. Today I find nothing more rewarding than to develop strong and cohesive teams that are focused on achieving accountable client outcomes and helping them change their lives.
