Last week, respected Kaurna (pronounced ‘Garnar’) Elder, Uncle Tamaru, held a Welcome to Country and Smoking Ceremony for Adelaide staff on Tuthangga (Tut-han-ga) Terrace. Tuthangga Terrace is named after the park lands directly opposite Adelaide Paramount, which derive their name from the Kaurna word ‘Tuthangga’, meaning ‘grass place’. Fitting this year’s NAIDOC Week theme, 'Keep the Fire Burning! Blak, Loud and Proud,’ Uncle Tamaru taught staff how to acknowledge Kaurna Country in the Kaurna language. Uncle Tamaru provides education on the Kaurna people, their history, art, and spiritual connection to the country, including some of Kaurna’s sacred ceremonies. Tom Kenny (voice of SpongeBob SquarePants) and Bill Fagerbakke (voice of Patrick Star) revealed to Mediaweek Australia's Jasper Baumann that their characters’ friendship, seen on the show for 25 years, doesn’t stray far from real life. Fagerbakke (Patrick) said: "I recognise things [in my own life] that are big themes of the show, such as friendship. Friendship is extremely important to me." Kenny (SpongeBob) added: "Most of the characteristics he [creator Steven Hillenburg] put into SpongeBob characters were from people throughout his life. He had a best friend who was a lot like Patrick when he was a kid; he had a boss at a food service job who was like Mr Crabs, and so on." SpongeBob SquarePants. At Pirrama (today’s Pyrmont), the traditional custodians of the land are the Gadigal people of the Eora Nation (Eora meaning 'here' or 'from this place'). 'Gadi' meaning 'Grasstree' in local languages, and 'Gal' meaning 'people'. Hence, the Gadigal are the People of the Grasstree. Narelda Jacobs, 10 News First presenter and proud Whadjuk Noongar yorga (woman), welcomed Brendan Kerin, Arrernte and Barkindji Elder and prominent member of the Metropolitan Local Aboriginal Land Council, to speak to staff this NAIDOC Week. When Brendan performs a Welcome to Country ceremony, it is a deeply personal experience and an opportunity to share the history of First Nations, ensuring that both their heritage and his own story are remembered, appreciated, and respected. NAIDOC Week is an opportunity for all Australians to learn about First Nations cultures and histories and to participate in celebrations of the oldest continuous living cultures on earth. #NAIDOC2024 #BLAKLOUDPROUD Visit the Metropolitan Local Aboriginal Land Council: https://metrolalc.org.au/ Learn more about NAIDOC Week: https://www.naidoc.org.au/
