This week some of the staff and volunteers from the Canberra & Region Visitors Centre were lucky enough to do a tour of Jamala Wildlife Lodge and the National Zoo & Aquarium with John - a clearly passionate and knowledgeable zookeeper who has been with the team for about 6 years. John gave us a walk through of the site and talked through the history of the Zoo and Jamala, along with a lot of information on their conservation efforts and imparted so many interesting animal facts! As part of the tour we were excited to experience one of the Zoo's signature encounters - Meet a Meerkat! This experience is available four times daily, with the beautiful little creatures coming to eat food right from your hand. While their claws look sharp, they are incredibly gentle - and they certainly know how to get to all the little bits of food that hide between your fingers! If you haven't been to the National Zoo & Aquarium for a while (or ever!) then put it on your list of places to visit ASAP, and check out some of their animal encounter experience offerings before you go - you might just find your new favourite animal!
