MATES are Stronger Together
About us
MATES in Construction is an industry-based charity established in 2008, aimed at reducing high levels of suicide in the Australian construction industry. MATES is an industry-led, research-backed charity, that is building a volunteer network of eyes and ears on the ground, trained to recognise the signs a workmate might be struggling with life and connect them to help. We lose a construction worker to suicide every second day. We also know that construction workers are 6 x times more likely to die from suicide than an accident at work. In the last 12 months 30% our apprentices have thought about suicide. A suicide is said to impact at least 135 people (conservatively). In 2021, MATES in Construction was recognised by the World Health Organisation (WHO) as an example of global suicide prevention best practice. Our 24/7 National helpline is: 1300 642 111 MATES Branches: Queensland, Northern Territory, New South Wales, South Australia and Western Australia

Thanks Hanssen Construction and Tecside for supporting your mates and flying the flag! #matesflytheflag24 #matesinconstruction #matesstrongertogether
Great to join the team at MATES in Construction and Hanssen Construction for the morning R U OK presentation and BBQ with all the workers. At Tecside, we strongly encourage all our candidates to speak up and reach out—no one should suffer in silence. Remember, our Tecside EAP service is available to support you if you're struggling. We're here to help.

A huge thank to the team at Evolution Civil Maintenance getting onboard with Fly the Flag last week! #matesflytheflag #matesstrongertogether #MATESInConstruction #matestrained
Evolution Civil Maintenance once again are proud to be part of MATES in Construction Fly The Flag For Your Mates Day. This day raises awareness of mental health and suicide prevention. Very serious topics which most likely have directly affected us all in some way. Last week Friday we held a BBQ and spoke not only about what avenues of assistance are available to an individual (EAP, MIC Connectors, as well as our ECM family). Also, about looking out for your mates and work colleagues. Don’t be afraid to speak up if you need help, or if you notice someone isn’t their usual self. We are stronger when united and looking out for each other.

Fantastic to see the team at Emmett getting into Fly the Flag last week! Well done! #matesflytheflag24 #matesinconstruction #mateshelpingmates #matesstrongertogether
With the suicide rate being over x2 more likely amongst construction workers across Australia, supporting mates is our business. Last week, Emmett was proud to host on-site BBQs as a part of the “Fly the Flag” event by MATES in Construction — a national charity established to reduce the high level of suicide among construction workers. Having a number of Emmett team members recently completing their next step in Mates Training to become “Connectors” in SA, it’s a charity and mindset we fiercely want to keep at the surface of our work and the wider industry. Visit the Mates in Construction website to know more, be a part of the charity or donate: https://mates.org.au/ Emmett Team: Timothy Barnes, Sam McClure, Matthew Rodbourn, Jack Young, Nick Emmett, Tom Emmett, Peter Bruns, Mason Ellis, Rachael Oborn.
