Really grateful to the Medical Technology Association of Australia (MTAA) for inviting me to join panels on both days of their annual #MedTech Conference 2024.
Over the course of two days I had the pleasure of joining panels on:
🔹The Future of #Healthcare: in which I joined a fantastic discussion with Farah Magrabi, Andrew Wiltshire, Warren Bingham (GAICD), and Hugh McDermott moderated by Geoff Quattromani.
We discussed some exciting developments in the medical technology space, and then dived deeper into reflections on the technology development lifecycle and ways we can more effectively incorporate and define the value propositions of innovation and inherent safety considerations by leveraging partnerships with consumers and community.
A key message of mine, as often applies to technology and innovation in the digital space, is the importance of designing to meet genuine needs.
Another is to recognise that value will mean different things to different stakeholders - hence the criticality of engaging broadly with a diversity of stakeholders, including consumers and community, to define a collective value to guide thinking.
🔹Empoweing patients - voices and advocacy for better healthcare: I was really lucky to have been able to share the stage, have a great chat with and learn from Monika Boogs, Ann Single, and Kate King during our panel moderated by Rozalina Sarkezians.
The discussion started with a focus on the role that patient and consumer advocacy can play in MedTech and the evolution of roles of advocacy to the importance of active and enduring partnerships with patients, consumers and community in helping to identify the ‘needs’ and values that catalyse meaningful reform and design.
Like any other stakeholder in the health sector, business decision-making is in large ways reliant on the circumstances of current and future policy, regulatory, and funding environments - so the importance of tethering product development to meet genuine needs and build foundational supports within communities emerged as a key factor for ensuring stability and success in innovation.

My thanks to Ian Burgess and Toby Hodgson for extending me the invitation to contribute to and engage with this awesome community again.
I’ll end this post with the last insight I shared on my final panel: that if you aren’t already aged and/or sick, one day you will be.
We are, all of us, just one really bad day away from becoming reliant on the systems, services, and products we all design and build for a living.
That’s why it’s critical in building for an equitable future state of health that consumers & community are active partners in your #design and decision-making.
Just remember it’s a certainty that you’ll eventually find yourself at the mercy of something you’re making or shaping right now.
Imagine the profound disappointment if the first thing you think when you engage from the other side is “shit, this just isn’t good enough”.
