If you’re looking to advance with your current employer, it’s important to ACTIVELY manage your career progression. Instead of waiting for your employer to notice your potential, let them know you’re ready for more responsibility. Speak up about your readiness to take on new tasks, receive additional training, help out your manager, and prepare for a bigger role. But if your current employer can’t offer the growth opportunities you’re seeking, that’s okay too. Sometimes, the pace of a company’s growth just doesn’t match up with your career goals. If that’s the case, it might be time to explore new opportunities where you can continue to develop and move forward. #ConstructionPeople

When you're detailing contract roles on your resume, it’s important to be clear about the specifics of each role and what you achieved. Simply listing tasks without context can sometimes give the wrong impression, like you didn’t see the role through or weren’t fully committed. Instead, focus on explaining the purpose and achievements of each contract role: * Start by clearly stating why the contract ended, whether it was for the contractual length or that specific project milestones were met. * Highlight the goals you were asked to accomplish and showcase how you successfully achieved them. * Include a timeline of your contract, mentioning any extensions and why they happened. * Emphasise the learning opportunities that came with the contract roles. This might include working on new projects, learning different construction methods, engaging with new subcontractors, or collaborating with various project teams. For example, if you're a Contract Administrator, working with a new Project Manager could give you fresh insights into how tasks are approached, adding to your experience and professional growth. Maybe you took the contract role because you liked the builder and hoped it might lead to a permanent position, or perhaps it was a temporary gig while you searched for a role that aligned better with your long-term goals. Either way, these reasons help paint a fuller picture of your career journey. #ConstructionPeople

People talk about employer of choice all the time, but what does that mean in the construction industry? The short answer is that it means different things for different roles. So, an employer of choice for a Contract Administrator or an Estimator would be very different from a Site Manager or a Site Supervisor. For site staff, if they don’t have to work weekends, that’s a massive lift, and unions are pushing for a five-day work week on bigger jobs, so if that could be introduced into the business, they’d certainly be considered an employer of choice for Site Supervisors. For office-based people, it might be about the flexibility of doing part days from home or a hybrid work environment of one day or more from home and the rest from the office if necessary. Demographics also need to be factored in eg. for a sub-30-year-old who is unmarried and with no kids, an employer of choice might mean work/life balance and not doing 60 hours per week. Then for people who have a young family and a big mortgage, it might just be about more money and that they need to make it work for their family. Overall, in my experience talking to a lot of candidates, the top 5 benefits that constitute an employer of choice are: hours, well-resourced projects, support from management, the covering of business expenses, and opportunities for promotion. #ConstructionPeople #constructionindustry
