As Australia’s listed companies prepare to unveil their latest earnings results this month, some of the world’s biggest consumer brands revealed this week how the cost-of-living crunch is eating into their bottom lines. McDonalds and Starbucks both suffered from fewer customers visiting their stores after both companies hiked prices for their food and drinks. Beer giant Heineken failed to get a sales boost from the recent Euros football tournament, while Diageo (which owns brands including Johnny Walker and Guinness) said customers had been cutting back on buying expensive spirits amid cost-of-living pressures. Here in Australia, Tribeca Investment Partners’ Jun Bei Liu expects August will be one softest earnings seasons of recent times, particularly for retailers. Market forecasts predict an average profit fall of four per cent for ASX companies for the year to June 30, The Australian reports. Interesting approach from the Electrical Trades Union (ETU) - full page advertisements responding to coverage over the past couple of weeks in the Nine News outlets of corrupt behaviour by some leaders of the main construction union, the CFMEU. The statement gets stuck into the Federal Government, refers to white collar crime going unpunished, and then has a go at the media.

The Australian share market may have been hitting new highs this week, but things aren’t looking quite as rosy for some sectors as the countdown to earnings season begins. Compounding the string of disappointing trading updates from cyclical stocks for the March quarter, consumer sentiment remains weak, the labour market remains soft, and business conditions have deteriorated. As noted by James Thomson in his AFR column on Wednesday, Goldman Sachs strategist Matthew Ross has signaled that all this adds up to an unlikely significant improvement in earnings come August results time. Meanwhile, analysts at Citi are holding out hope for retailers. According to The Australian, they’re keen to hear whether retailers such as JB Hi-Fi and Harvey Norman have benefited from shoppers spending their Stage 3 tax cuts that came into effect on July 1. The job switching trend that emerged during the height of the Covid-19 pandemic appears to be over, new data from the Australian Bureau of Statistics this week shows. The number of employees changing jobs fell to just 8.0 per cent in 12 months to February, which is back to around levels typically seen in the five years leading up to the pandemic and a marked drop from the 9.6 per cent recorded for the year to February 2023. It’s a similar story over in the US, where many workers are complaining about feeling stuck in their jobs. As a result, companies are creating new opportunities such as letting them apply for temporary positions on other teams, working in new cities for a few months, and expanding some roles to provide new challenges. While more than half of all ASX 200 CEOs and executive teams are now judged and compensated on their ability to achieve climate-related goals, 2024 was also the year that ESG talk gave way to ESG pragmatism. With Australian climate regulation coming into effect over the next few months, companies are gradually realising the monumental scale of what it means to meet their ESG goals while still maintaining profitability. As a consequence, companies that missed their ambitious ESG targets are slowly walking them back, according to The Australian Financial Review. Among the reasons given for throwing in the towel: Unclear or inconsistent regulation, insufficient government support, delays in the rollout or development of new technology, and concerns that they could be held legally accountable for failure to meet their publicly stated ESG goals. Today, Cannings client Luna Park Sydney has been listed for sale for the first time in two decades. The sale is tipped to generate significant domestic and international buyer interest in one of Sydney's most famous cultural landmarks. The iconic Luna Park Sydney features 17 amusement rides, the heritage-listed Coney Island, 7,000sqm of building floorspace including Sydney's Immersive Big Top and the 1935-built Crystal Palace. Guzman y Gomez’s (GYG) highly anticipated IPO finally got off the ground yesterday, with shares surging 36%, placing a $3bn market cap on the company. Today’s papers are awash with ecstatic photos of GYG founder and CEO Steven Marks and his team jumping for joy in their yellow hoodies at the ASX yesterday. But as everyone knows, the jury is still well and truly out on whether this Mexican-themed media darling will be able to hit its ambitious growth targets in the coming years. This week, The Australian Financial Review's Chanticleer pondered whether the market had lost its mind over the GYG float, and overnight Street Talk released leaked information that GYG has a history of missing targets. Reflecting on yesterday’s float, Modano founder Michael Hutchens said: “The public markets Ponzi is alive and kicking, it will be fascinating to see how it all unfolds over the coming 12 months.” Indeed it will... A great initiative from Cannings client, Sydney Desalination Plant Pty Limited. #Seagrass #Desalination
Did you know that just off the shores of Kurnell in Sydney's south, scientists from UNSW Science and the teams at Veolia Australia and New Zealand and Gamay Rangers are working hard to restore seagrass colonies to provide a safe refuge for seahorses, fish and invertebrates? The Sydney Desalination Plant proudly supports this important initiative by helping the scientists regrow seagrass that’s been washed up on local beaches. Special tanks have been set up outside our intake facility for seagrass segments to recover and regrow while receiving a constant stream of seawater from our supplies. Some of the scientists involved will be in Italy this week for the 2024 World Seagrass Conference. Here, scientists will discuss ways to tackle seagrass challenges using projects just like this one in Kurnell. #WorldSeagrassConference2024 #Seagrass #Desalination #SydneyDesalinationPlant #Water
