Creating a better environment for all bicycle riders through our advocacy work, membership and events.
About us
Bicycle NSW is a member-based association with a substantial history of representing bicycle users in NSW. Our mission is: “Creating a better environment for all bicycle riders” Our goal is to achieve a better environment for current riders, and for those who may be encouraged to ride a bicycle in the future. Bicycle NSW seeks to stimulate the cultural and behavioural change necessary to mainstream bicycle use while also advocating for improvements to be made to the built environment that improve the viability of the bicycle as a serious transport option. We run programs and events, advocate for better conditions for bicycle users and provide a variety of information for bicycle users. We work collaboratively with a wide network of partners and friends to reach our shared objective of mainstreaming bicycle use. ****You can now buy Bicycle NSW a coffee for articles and posts you enjoy and would like to support here: 👉 https://buymeacoffee.com/bicyclensw *****

Great tips for bicycle advocates everywhere! Bicycle NSW is a big fan of the work of Dave Walker Cartoons Dave is known as the ‘cycling cartoonist’. His sharp commentary on sustainable transport and bike riding has helped get people thinking about our inequitable transport system - and made many advocates smile! https://lnkd.in/gvdr3vrp Dave’s fantastic new 8-page comic can be downloaded here: https://lnkd.in/gcg2HhpK There are instructions for printing and folding. Why not make a few booklets to share with your community? There are dozens of poignant and clever cartoon in the book ‘From A to B’, a collection of recent work that Dave describes as ‘a manifesto for pedal-powered transport’ https://lnkd.in/gjif79dY All images: Dave Walker Cartoons Bicycle NSW Dave Walker #bugs #advocacy #insurance #membership #MemberBenefits #BikeIsBest

The lunchtime walking tour is a fixture at Transport Camp. In Melbourne, this involved a walk around the block to look at how Swanston Street, Little Collins Street, Exhibition Street and Collins Street have changed in recent years. Led by Richard Smithers, the recently-retired Manager Transport Strategy at City of Melbourne, we learnt about: ▪️ the quicker-cheaper-faster tactical interventions that Melbourne has deployed to great effect ▪️ the long-term transformation of Swanston Street ▪️ how an incredibly narrow bike lane on Collins Street actually works OK ▪️ the exciting new Metro that is under construction After attending Transport Camp, Bicycle NSW spent a weekend riding on Melbourne's bike infrastructure. It was fascinating to experience the different approaches to developing a bike network. A longer write-up is coming – watch this space! Bicycle NSW has attended another fantastic Transport Camp – this time in Melbourne! Transport Camp is an ‘un-conference’. There are no formal presentations or abstracts. Attendees set the agenda and run the sessions themselves. This might be to workshop an idea, present some recent research or discuss how stakeholders can work together to overcome policy blockages. It was a great opportunity to meet some of Melbourne’s community of advocates and professionals, all passionate about creating better cities and more diverse and sustainable transport. Highlights were sessions on reframing active transport strategies, boosting mode shift, passing the ‘pub test’, unbundled parking research and moving NIMBYs to MIMBYs to YIMBYs. And much, much more. And then we continued the conversations in a bar by the Yarra. Before a weekend exploring a LOT of Melbourne’s bike infrastructure on a brilliant Brompton on loan from Omafiets! Insights to come…. It’s not a big surprise…. The local government election results show strong community support for walking, cycling and better streets. Despite this, the run up to polling day in some areas was rife with negative attacks on candidates who support cycling. Did this make a difference? Read on to find out what happened in two metropolitan councils on different sides of Sydney Harbour – North Sydney and City of Sydney. https://lnkd.in/gyn_jNyh Both councils have controversial active transport projects underway. But the election outcomes demonstrate that fearmongering doesn’t cut through with the quiet majority who just want safer, greener neighbourhoods with more options for getting around. All of this indicates that vocal opponents to bike infrastructure projects are but a small segment of the community. Albeit a powerful, motivated and well-connected segment. “In general, the electorate continues to show an increasing interest in candidates supporting active transport,” says Bicycle NSW CEO Peter Mclean. “This has been demonstrated in a number of different areas across NSW - including outer suburban context such as Camden where my campaign included a commitment to Active Camden”. Bicycle NSW is pleased to confirm that Peter was re-elected! https://lnkd.in/gVT2aFti Stay tuned for a more detailed election analysis when we have had a chance to dig into the full results. Bicycle NSW is really excited to join the UNSW Australian Graduate School of Engineering short course Active Transport: Cycleway Design this spring! Increasing demand for safe and accessible cycle infrastructure has highlighted a shortfall in the supply of best practice cycleway design. This course aims to fill a gap in the skills and capacity of professionals to develop cycleways. The program is designed for anyone involved in planning, designing, funding or advocating for best practice cycleways that encourage more people to ride. \ The course is led by cycleway design gurus Dick van den Dool and Mike Harris. Classes run for 8 weeks from October 28, with a 1.5 hr webinar each week and 2 days of site tours on bike and in person workshops in Week 4. The training course consists of theoretical learning, coursework, and a practical group design exercise. Head here to find out more: https://lnkd.in/geH4x3Gd And check out the in this short introductory video! There is a discount for registrations before 7th October. Contact Bicycle NSW for details. The images show cycleways in Zetland, Kensington, Bondi Junction and Erskineville, all captured by Jack Griffiths during the 2023 course. https://lnkd.in/gDvQqW59 Jack was very inspired by everything he learnt from Dick and Mike, and he is working hard every day in his role as Traffic and Transport Engineer at Strathfield Council to make Strathfield’s streets better for bike riding.
