We’re here for community health, inclusion and HIV responses for people of diverse sexualities and genders.

About us

We’re a New South Wales based health promotion organisation specialising in HIV prevention, HIV support and lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and intersex (LGBTI) health. Established in 1985 as the AIDS Council of NSW, we’re here to end HIV transmission among gay and homosexually active men, and promote the lifelong health of LGBTI people and people with HIV. Our head office is in Sydney, we have offices in five regional locations and we provide services throughout NSW. We’re primarily funded by the NSW Government through the NSW Ministry of Health and our work forms an integral part of the NSW Government’s HIV Strategy. We provide a comprehensive range of evidence based programs and services as well as collaborating with all levels of government to ensure our work is supported by effective policy settings. People choose to work at ACON because they believe in what we do. ACON employees get a great sense of accomplishment from working here and most strongly identify with ACON’s goals and objectives. ACON provides employees with a number of learning experiences ranging from courses and seminars, to e-learning and conferences as well as on-the-job learning. ACON also assists employee learning through Study Assistance. We offer employees a supportive workplace through flexible work practices and benefits. ACON is committed to building an organisation that represents the variety of our rich and diverse communities. All people in the workplace deserve to be treated with dignity and respect. We are an Equal Opportunity Employer and encourage people with HIV, in particular, to apply. NEWS: "The rapidly rising numbers of mpox cases detected across the state are very concerning, with 26 people requiring hospitalisation due to the severity of their symptoms," says NSW chief health officer Dr Kerry Chant. "The majority of cases of hospitalisation have been among people who are unvaccinated or have received only one dose of vaccine. While cases of mpox are occurring in vaccinated people, the cases tend to be milder and for a shorter period."

ACON CEO Michael Woodhouse joined NSW Health Chief Health Officer Dr Kerry Chant and Western Sydney LHD Sexual Health Specialist Dr Rohan Bopage at a press conference today to provide an important community update on mpox. Since June 2024, there have been over 400 mpox notifications in NSW. "People in our communities are at higher risk of acquiring mpox particularly sexually active gay and bisexual men and their partners," Woodhouse said. "Our communities have a long history of doing what it takes to protect ourselves and our partners. Now is one of those times. "Getting the mpox vaccine is the best way to protect yourself and others against severe illness caused by the virus." Woodhouse urged people to not hesitate in getting fully vaccinated against mpox. "The majority of hospitalisations are among those who are unvaccinated or have only received one dose," Woodhouse said. "Getting the mpox vaccine is easy. It is free and you do not need a Medicare card to receive it. All vaccination appointments are private and confidential. "With mpox circulating in NSW, it’s important our communities keep vigilant for mpox symptoms and take measures to safeguard their health. Now is the time to protect yourself and others by getting vaccinated against mpox."
