Hadronic light-by-light scattering contribution to the muon $g-2$ from lattice QCD: semi-analytical calculation of the QED kernel
Abstract: Hadronic light-by-light scattering is one of the virtual processes that causes the gyromagnetic factor $g$ of the muon to deviate from the value of two predicted by Dirac's theory. This process makes one of the largest contributions to the uncertainty of the Standard Model prediction for the muon $(g-2)$. Lattice QCD allows for a first-principles approach to computing this non-perturbative effect.… ▽ More

The anomalous magnetic moment of the muon in the Standard Model
Abstract: We review the present status of the Standard Model calculation of the anomalous magnetic moment of the muon. This is performed in a perturbative expansion in the fine-structure constant $α$ and is broken down into pure QED, electroweak, and hadronic contributions. The pure QED contribution is by far the largest and has been evaluated up to and including $\mathcal{O}(α^5)$ with negligible numerical… ▽ More

Lattice calculation of the pion transition form factor with $N_f=2+1$ Wilson quarks

Hadronic light-by-light scattering in the anomalous magnetic moment of the muon
Abstract: Hadronic light-by-light scattering in the anomalous magnetic moment of the muon $a_μ$ is one of two hadronic effects limiting the precision of the Standard Model prediction for this precision observable, and hence the new-physics discovery potential of direct experimental determinations of $a_μ$. Then we present our semi-analytical evaluation of the pion-pole contribution, using a description of the pion-photon-photon form factor based on large-N_C and short-distance properties of QCD. We also sketch an effective field theory approach to hadronic light-by-light scattering. In view o… ▽ More

Hadronic light-by-light scattering contribution to the muon g-2 in large-N_C QCD
Abstract: We present our recent semi-analytical evaluation of the pion-pole contribution to hadronic light-by-light scattering, using a description of the pion-photon-photon form factor based on large-N_C and short-distance properties of QCD. Inclusion of all light pseudoscalar states leads to a_{mu}(LbyL;PS) = + 8.3 (1.2) x 10^{-10}. We also sketch an effective field theory approach to hadronic light-by-… ▽ More

Hadronic light-by-light scattering contribution to the muon g-2: an effective field theory approach
Abstract: The hadronic light-by-light contribution to a_{mu}, the anomalous magnetic moment of the muon, is discussed from the point of view of an effective low-energy theory. As an application, the coefficient of the leading logarithm arising from the two-loop graphs involving two anomalous vertices is computed, and found to be positive. This corresponds to a positive sign for the pion-pole contribution… ▽ More

Hadronic light-by-light corrections to the muon g-2: the pion-pole contribution
Abstract: The correction to the muon anomalous magnetic moment from the pion-pole contribution to the hadronic light-by-light scattering is considered using a description of the pi0 - gamma* - gamma* transition form factor based on the large-Nc and short-distance properties of QCD. The resulting two-loop integrals are treated by first performing the angular integration analytically, using the method of Ge… ▽ More

Resonance estimates of O(p^6) low-energy constants and QCD short-distance constraints
Abstract: Starting from the study of the low-energy and high-energy behaviours of the QCD three-point functions <VAP>, <VVP> and <AAP>, several O(p^6) low-energy constants of the chiral Lagrangian are evaluated within the framework of the lowest meson dominance (LMD) approximation to the large-N_C limit of QCD. In certain cases, values that differ substantially from estimates based on a resonance Lagrangi… ▽ More

QCD sum rules for rho mesons in nuclear matter
Abstract: We investigate QCD sum rules for vector currents in the rho meson channel in the nuclear medium. For increased sensitivity, we subtract out the vacuum contributions. With a saturation scheme often considered in the literature, we find these subtracted sum rules to be unstable. It indicates the importance of other contributions neglected in the saturation scheme. These include more Landau singula… ▽ More

Chiral Dynamics in the electroweak sector
Abstract: Using a chiral Lagrangian we show that strongly interacting models of electroweak symmetry breaking are not in conflict with precision data. Such models, like Technicolor, need not lead to a heavy Higgs-like signal. Furthermore, the allowed values for the low-energy constants in the effective Lagrangian, derived from bounds on the oblique correction parameters S,T,U, are not unnatural. Finally,… ▽ More

Rho meson properties in nuclear matter from QCD sum rules
Abstract: We study the properties of rho mesons in nuclear matter by means of QCD sum rules at finite density. For increased sensitivity, we subtract out the vacuum contributions. With the spectral function as estimated in the literature, these subtracted sum rules are found to be not well satisfied. We suppose that Landau singularities from higher resonance states in the nearby region in this channel are… ▽ More

The electroweak chiral Lagrangian revisited
Abstract: Using a manifestly gauge-invariant approach we show that the set of low-energy constants in the electroweak chiral Lagrangian currently used in the literature is redundant. In particular, by employing the equations of motion for the gauge fields, one can choose to remove two low-energy constants which contribute to the self-energies of the gauge bosons. The relation of this result to the experim… ▽ More

The electroweak chiral Lagrangian reanalyzed
Abstract: In this paper we reanalyze the electroweak chiral Lagrangian with particular focus on two issues related to gauge invariance. Our analysis is based on a manifestly gauge-invariant approach that we introduced recently. It deals with gauge-invariant Green's functions and provides a method to evaluate the corresponding generating functional without fixing the gauge. First we show, for the case wher… ▽ More

Gauge-invariant Green's functions for the bosonic sector of the standard model
Abstract: There are many applications in gauge theories where the usually employed framework involving gauge-dependent Green's functions leads to considerable problems. In order to overcome the difficulties invariably tied to gauge dependence, we present a manifestly gauge-invariant approach. We propose a generating functional of appropriately chosen gauge-invariant Green's functions for the bosonic secto… ▽ More

Analyzing Chiral Symmetry Breaking in Supersymmetric Gauge Theories
Abstract: We compare gap equation predictions for the spontaneous breaking of global symmetries in supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory to nonperturbative results from holomorphic effective action techniques. In the theory without matter fields, both approaches describe the formation of a gluino condensate. With $N_f$ flavors of quark and squark fields, and with $N_f$ below a certain critical value, the coupl… ▽ More

Effective Field Theory for a Heavy Higgs Boson: Matching and Gauge Invariance
Abstract: For large values of the Higgs mass the low energy structure of the gauged linear sigma model in the spontaneously broken phase can adequately be described by an effective field theory. We present a manifestly gauge-invariant functional technique to explicitly evaluate the corresponding effective Lagrangian from the underlying theory.

QCD at Large $θ$ Angle and Axion Cosmology
Abstract: We use the chiral Lagrangian to investigate the global properties of the $N$-flavor QCD vacuum as a function of the $θ$ parameter. In the case of exact quark degeneracy we find evidence for first order phase transitions at $θ= π\cdot ({\rm odd~ integer})$. The first order transitions are smoothed by quark mass splittings, although interesting effects remain at realistic quark masses. We emphasiz… ▽ More
