The departure of the latest FNAL experimental average for the muon anomalous magnetic moment $a_μ=(g_μ-2)/2$ measurements having increased from $4.2 σ$ to $5.0 σ$, with respect to the White Paper consensus, it may indicate a hint for new physics. As the most delicate piece of $a_μ$ is its leading order HVP part $a_μ^{HVP-LO}$, methods to ascertain its theoretical value are crucial to interpret this discrepancy. We propose to examine the dipion spectra from the $η/η' \rightarrow π^+ π^- γ$ decays in the Hidden Local Symmetry (HLS) context using its BHLS$_2$ broken variant. We thus have at our disposal a framework where the close relationship of the dipion spectra from the $η/η'$ and $τ$ decays and of the $e^+e^- \to π^+π^-$ annihilation can be simultaneously considered. A special focus is put to the high statistic dipion spectra from the $η$ decay collected by the KLOE/KLOE2 Collaboration and $η'$ decay collected by the BESIII Collaboration, and it is shown that the BHLS$_2$ framework provides a fair account of their dipion spectra. More precisely, it is first proven that a single Omnès representation real polynomial is requested, common to both the $η$ and $η'$ dipion spectra. Moreover, it is shown that fits involving the $η/η'/τ$ dipion spectra, and excluding the $e^+e^- \to π^+π^-$ annihilation data, allow for a prediction of the pion vector form factor data $F_π(s)$ which fairly agree with the usual dipion spectra collected in the $e^+e^- \to π^+π^-$ annihilation channel. Even if more precise $η/η'/τ$ dipion spectra would help to be fully conclusive, this confirms the Dispersive Approach results for $a_μ^{HVP-LO}$ and points towards a common non experiment-dependent origin to this tension with the now well accepted LQCD result.

The generic Hidden Local Symmetry (HLS) model has given rise to the BHLS$_2$ variant which introduces symmetry breaking in the vector meson sector; the central mechanism is a modification of the covariant derivative at the root of the HLS approach. However, the description of the Belle $τ$ dipion spectra is not satisfactory whereas the dealing with its annihilation sector ($e^+ e^- \rightarrow π^+ π^-/π^+ π^-π^0/ π^0 γ/ηγ/K^+ K^-/K_L K_S$) is optimum. This issue is solved by an additional breaking term allowing to include the $[π^0,η,η^\prime]$ system. This extension of the usual 't~Hooft determinant term only affects the BHLS$_2$ kinetic energy term. One obtains a fair account for the $τ$ dipion spectra as well as for the annihilation channels.
The Belle dipion spectrum provides evidence for a violation of CVC in the $τ$ lepton decay; this evidence is strengthened by imposing the conditions $<0|J_μ^q |[q^\prime \overline{q^\prime}](p)>=ip_μf_q δ_{q q^\prime },
\{ [q \overline{q}], q=u,d,s\}$ on BHLS$_2$ axial current matrix elements. BHLS$_2$ is found to recover the usual (completed) formulae for the [$π^0,~η,~η^\prime$] mixing parameters and the global fits return mixing parameter values in agreement with expectations and better uncertainties. Updating the muon HVP, one argues that the strong tension between the KLOE and BaBar pion form factors imposes to provide two solutions : $a_μ^{HVP-LO}({\rm KLOE})=687.31 \pm 2.93$ and $a_μ^{HVP-LO}({\rm BaBar})=692.36 \pm 2.95$, in units of $10^{-10}$, rather than some combination of these. Taking into account common systematics, their differences with the experimental BNL-FNAL average value exhibit significances $> 5.4σ$ (KLOE) and $> 4.1σ$ (BaBar) with fit probabilities favoring the former.

We review the present status of the Standard Model calculation of the anomalous magnetic moment of the muon. This is performed in a perturbative expansion in the fine-structure constant $α$ and is broken down into pure QED, electroweak, and hadronic contributions. The pure QED contribution is by far the largest and has been evaluated up to and including $\mathcal{O}(α^5)$ with negligible numerical uncertainty. The electroweak contribution is suppressed by $(m_μ/M_W)^2$ and only shows up at the level of the seventh significant digit. It has been evaluated up to two loops and is known to better than one percent. Hadronic contributions are the most difficult to calculate and are responsible for almost all of the theoretical uncertainty. The leading hadronic contribution appears at $\mathcal{O}(α^2)$ and is due to hadronic vacuum polarization, whereas at $\mathcal{O}(α^3)$ the hadronic light-by-light scattering contribution appears. Given the low characteristic scale of this observable, these contributions have to be calculated with nonperturbative methods, in particular, dispersion relations and the lattice approach to QCD. The largest part of this review is dedicated to a detailed account of recent efforts to improve the calculation of these two contributions with either a data-driven, dispersive approach, or a first-principle, lattice-QCD approach. The final result reads $a_μ^\text{SM}=116\,591\,810(43)\times 10^{-11}$ and is smaller than the Brookhaven measurement by 3.7$σ$. The experimental uncertainty will soon be reduced by up to a factor four by the new experiment currently running at Fermilab, and also by the future J-PARC experiment. This and the prospects to further reduce the theoretical uncertainty in the near future-which are also discussed here-make this quantity one of the most promising places to look for evidence of new physics.

Previous studies have shown that the Hidden Local Symmetry (HLS) Model, supplied with appropriate symmetry breaking, provides an Effective Lagrangian (BHLS) able to encompass a large number of processes within a unified framework. A global fit provides a simultaneous description of the $e^+ e^-$ annihilation into $π^+π^-$, $π^0γ$, $ηγ$, $π^+π^-π^0$, $K^+K^-$, $K_L K_S$, the dipion spectrum in the $τ$ decay and other light meson partial widths. Additional breaking schemes extend its scope to spacelike processes within a new framework (BHLS$_2$). The phenomenology previously explored with BHLS is revisited in the BHLS$_2$ context with emphasis on the $Φ$ mass region. It is shown that BHLS$_2$ addresses the close spacelike region covered by NA7 and Fermilab data; also, the Lattice QCD pion form factor is accurately predicted by BHLS$_2$ using fits to annihilation data only. These channels contribution to $a_μ$ over the range of validity of BHLS$_2$ is shown to strongly reduce the former BHLS systematics. The uncertainty on $a_μ^{\rm th}(\sqrt{s}< 1.05$ GeV) is much improved compared to standard approaches relying on direct integration methods of measured spectra. Using the BHLS$_2$ results, the leading order HVP contribution to the muon anomalous moment is $a_μ^{HVP-LO}= 686.65 \pm 3.01 +(+1.16,-0.75)_{syst.}$ in units of $10^{-10}$. Using a conservative estimate for the light--by--light contribution, our evaluation is $a_μ^{\rm th}=\left [11\,659\,175.96 \pm 4.17 +(+1.16,-0.75)_{syst.}\right]\times 10^{-10}$. The $ρ^0γ$ mixing in dispersive and LQCD approaches is discussed and may amount to a shift $δa_μ[ππ]_{ργ} = +(3.10\pm0.31)\times 10^{-10}$ at LO+NLO, presently treated as additional systematics. Taking this shift into account, $a_μ^{\rm th}-a_μ^{\rm BNL}$ exhibits a significance not smaller than $3.8 σ$.

We present an up-to-date analysis of muon $g-2$ evaluations in terms of Mellin-Barnes moments as they might be useful for lattice QCD calculations of $a_μ$. The moments up to 4th order are evaluated directly in terms of $e^+e^-$--annihilation data and improved within the Hidden Local Symmetry (HLS) Model, supplied with appropriate symmetry breaking mechanisms. The model provides a reliable Effective Lagrangian (BHLS) estimate of the two-body channels plus the $πππ$ channel up to 1.05~GeV, just including the $φ$ resonance. The HLS piece accounts for 80\% of the contribution to $a_μ$. The missing pieces are evaluated in the standard way directly in terms of the data. We find that the moment expansion converges well in terms of a few moments. The two types of moments which show up in the Mellin-Barnes representation are calculated in terms of hadronic cross--section data in the timelike region and in terms of the hadronic vacuum polarization (HVP) function in the spacelike region which is accessible to lattice QCD (LQCD). In the Euclidean the first type of moments are the usual Taylor coefficients of the HVP and we show that the second type of moments may be obtained as integrals over the appropriately Taylor truncated HVP function. Specific results for the isovector part of $a_μ^{\rm had}$ are determined by means of HLS model predictions in close relation to $τ$--decay spectra.

The Hidden Local Symmetry (HLS) Model provides a framework able to encompass several physical processes and gives a unfied description of these in an energy range extending up to the $φ$ mass. Supplied with appropriate symmetry breaking schemes, the HLS Model gives a broken Effective Lagrangian (BHLS). The BHLS Lagrangian gives rise to a fit procedure in which a simultaneous description of the $e^+ e^-$ annihilations to $π^+π^-$, $π^0 γ$, $ηγ$, $π^+π^- π^0$, $K^+ K^-$, $K_L K_S$ and of the dipion spectrum in the decay $τ^\pm \rightarrow π^\pm π^0 ν$ can be performed.
Supplemented with a few pieces of information on the $ρ^0-ω-φ$ system, the $τ$ dipion spectrum is shown to predict accurately the pion form factor in $e^+ e^-$ annihilations. Physics results derived from global fits involving or excluding the $τ$ dipion spectra are found consistent with each others. Therefore, no obvious mismatch between the $τ$ and $e^+e^- $ physics properties arises and the $τ-e^+e^- $ puzzle vanishes within the broken HLS Model.

Previous studies have shown that the Hidden Local Symmetry (HLS) Model, supplied with appropriate symmetry breaking mechanisms, provides an Effective Lagrangian (BHLS) which encompasses a large number of processes within a unified framework; a global fit procedure allows for a simultaneous description of the e+ e- annihilation into the 6 final states $π^+ π^-$, $π^0 γ$, $ηγ$, $π^+ π^- π^0$, $K^+ K^-$, $K_l K_s$ and includes the dipion spectrum in the τ decay and some more light meson decay partial widths. The contribution to the muon anomalous magnetic moment $a_{th}$ of these annihilation channels over the range of validity of the HLS model (up to 1.05 GeV) is found much improved compared to its partner derived from integrating the measured spectra directly. However, most spectra for the process $e^+ e^- \to π^+ π^-$ undergo overall scale uncertainties which dominate the other sources, and one may suspect some bias in the dipion contribution to $a_{th}$. However, an iterated fit algorithm, shown to lead to unbiased results by a Monte Carlo study, is defined and applied succesfully to the $e^+ e^- \to π^+ π^-$ data samples from CMD2, SND, KLOE, BaBar and BESSIII. The iterated fit solution is shown to be further improved and leads to a value for $a_μ$ different from $a_{exp}$ above the 4 $σ$ level. The contribution of the $π^+ π^-$ intermediate state up to 1.05 GeV to $a_{th}$ derived from the iterated fit benefits from an uncertainty about 3 times smaller than the corresponding usual estimate. Therefore, global fit techniques are shown to work and lead to improved unbiased results.

A global fit of parameters allows us to pin down the Hidden Local Symmetry (HLS) effective Lagrangian, which we apply for the prediction of the leading hadronic vacuum polarization contribution to the muon g-2. The latter is dominated by the annihilation channel e+e- -> pi+pi-, for which data are available by scan (CMD-2 and SND) and ISR (KLOE-2008, KLOE-2010 and BaBar) experiments. It is well known that the different data sets are not in satisfactory agreement. In fact it is possible to fix the model parameters without using the pi+pi- data, by using instead the dipion spectra measured in the tau decays together with experimental spectra for the pi0 gamma, eta gamma, pi+pi-pi0, K+K-, K0bar K0 final states supplemented by specific meson decay properties. Among these, the accepted decay width for rho0 -> e+e- and the partial widths and phase information for the omega/phi -> pi+pi- transitions, are considered. It is then shown that, relying on this global data set, the HLS model, appropriately broken, allows to predict accurately the pion form factor up to 1.05 GeV. It is shown that the data samples provided by CMD-2, SND and KLOE-2010 behave consistently with each other and with the other considered data. Consistency problems with the KLOE-2008 and BaBar data samples are substantiated. "All data" global fits are investigated by applying reweighting the conflicting data sets. Constraining to our best fit, the broken HLS model yields a_mu(th) = (11659169.55 [+1.26 -0.59]_phi +[+0.00 -2.00]_tau +/- 5.21_(th))~10**-10 associated with a very good global fit probability. Correspondingly, we find that Delta a_mu=a_mu (exp)- a_mu (th) exhibits a significance ranging between 4.7 and 4.9 sigma.

Due to the large heavy quark production cross-sections, these data provide unprecedented samples of heavy flavoured hadrons. The first results from LHCb have made a significant impact on the flavour physics landscape and have definitively proved the concept of a dedicated experiment in the forward region at a hadron collider. This document discusses the implications of these first measurements on classes of extensions to the Standard Model, bearing in mind the interplay with the results of searches for on-shell production of new particles at ATLAS and CMS. The physics potential of an upgrade to the LHCb detector, which would allow an order of magnitude more data to be collected, is emphasised.

Combined with the results from our CP asymmetry measurements in B_s -> J/psi phi decays, we conclude that the B_s mass eigenstate that is almost CP =+1 is lighter and decays faster than the mass eigenstate that is almost CP =-1. This determines the sign of the decay width difference DeltaGamma_s == Gamma_L -Gamma_H to be positive. Our result also resolves the ambiguity in the past measurements of the CP violating phase phi_s to be close to zero rather than pi. These conclusions are in agreement with the Standard Model expectations.

The muon anomalous magnetic moment $a_μ$ and the hadronic vacuum polarization are examined using data analyzed within the framework of a suitably broken HLS model. The analysis relies on all available scan data samples and leaves provisionally aside the existing ISR data. Our HLS model based global fit approach allows for a better check of consistency between data sets and we investigate how results depend on different strategies which may be followed. Relying on global fit qualities, we find several acceptable solutions leading to ambiguities in the reconstructed value for $(a_μ)_{th}$. Among these, the most conservative solution is $a_μ^{\rm had,LO}[{\rm HLS \ improved}]=687.72(4.63) \times 10^{-10}$ and $(a_μ)_{th}=11\,659\,175.37(5.31)\times 10^{-10}$ corresponding to a $4.1 σ$ significance for the difference $Δa_μ=(a_μ)_{exp}-(a_μ)_{th}$. It is also shown that the various contributions accessible through the model yield uniformly a factor 2 improvement of their uncertainty. The breaking procedure implemented in the HLS model is an extension of the former procedure based on the BKY mechanism. This yields a quite satisfactory simultaneous description of most $e^+e^-$ annihilation channels up to and including the $φ$ meson ($π^+π^-$, $π^0γ$, $ηγ$, $π^+π^-π^0$, $K^+K^-$, $K^0 \bar{K}^0$) and of a set of 10 (mostly radiative) decay widths of light mesons. It also allows to achieve the proof of consistency between the $e^+e^- \to π^+π^-$ annihilation and the $τ^\pm \ra π^\pmπ^0 ν$ decay and gives a solution to the reported problem concerning the measured partial width ratio $Γ(φ\to K^+K^-)/Γ(φ\to K^0 \bar{K}^0)$. Prospects for improving the VMD based estimates of $a_μ$ are emphasized.

One extends this global fit in order to include also the dipion spectra from the tau decay, taking into account all reported information on their statistical and systematic errors. A model accounting for lineshape distortions of the rho+- spectrum relative to rho0 is also examined when analyzing the tau data behavior within the global fit framework. One shows that a successful account for e+ e- annihilation data and tau spectra can be simultaneously reached. Then, issues related with non--perturbative hadronic contributions to the muon g-2 are examined in details. It is shown that all e+ e- data considered together allow for improved and motivated estimates for the a_mu(pi+ pi-), the pi+ pi- loop contribution to the muon g-2; for instance, integrated between 0.630 and 0.958 GeV, we find a_mu(pi+ pi-)= 359.62 +- 1.62 (in units of 10^{-10}), a 40% improvement of the current uncertainty. The effects of the various tau samples in the context of a global fit procedure leads to conclude that different lineshape distortions are revealed by the ALEPH, BELLE and CLEO data samples. Relying on global fits to the data quoted above, one also provides motivated estimates of the pi+ pi-, pi0 gamma, eta gamma and pi0 pi+ pi- contributions to a_mu up to 1 GeV with the smallest possible uncertainties. These estimates are based on various global fit configurations, each yielding a good probability.

The HLS Model, equipped with a mechanism providing the breaking of U(3)/SU(3) symmetry and an isospin symmetry breaking leading naturally to vector meson mixing, has been recently shown to successfully account for $e^+ e^- \ra π^+π^-$ cross section and for the dipion spectrum in $τ$ decay. The present study shows that the full anomalous sector of the HLS model can be considered and is validated by the experimental data. Indeed, this extended model provides a successful simultaneous fit to the $e^+ e^- \ra π^+π^-$ data together with the available data on $e^+ e^- \ra π^0γ$, $e^+ e^- \ra ηγ$ and $e^+ e^- \ra π^0 π^+π^-$ cross sections. It is shown that the fit of these data sets also predicts an accurate description of the $η/η^\prime \ra π^+ π^- γ$ decays fully consistent with the reported information on their branching fractions and spectra. Finally, one also derives from our global fits products of widths of the form $Γ(V \ra f_1)Γ(V \ra e^+ e^-) $ and ratios of the form $Γ(V \ra f_1)/Γ(V \ra f_2)$ describing decays of vector mesons to several non--leptonic final states.

We readdress the problem of finding a simultaneous description of the pion form factor data in e+e- annihilations and in tau decays. For this purpose, we work in the framework of the Hidden Local Symmetry (HLS) Lagrangian and modify the vector meson mass term by including the pion and kaon loop contributions. This leads us to define the physical rho, omega and phi fields as linear combinations of their ideal partners, with coefficients being meromorphic functions of s, the square of the 4--momentum flowing into the vector meson lines. This allows us to define a dynamical, i.e. s-dependent, vector meson mixing scheme. The model is overconstrained by extending the framework in order to include the description of all meson radiative (V P gamma and P gamma gamma couplings) and leptonic (Ve+e- couplings) decays and also the isospin breaking (omega/ phi --> pi+ pi-) decay modes. The model provides a simultaneous, consistent and good description of the e+e- and tau dipion spectra. The expression for pion form factor in the latter case is derived from those in the former case by switching off the isospin breaking effects specific to e+e- and switching on those for tau decays. Besides, the model also provides a good account of all decay modes of the form V P gamma, Pgamma gamma as well as the isospin breaking decay modes. It leads us to propose new reference values for the rho^0 --> e+ e- and omega --> pi+ pi- partial widths which are part of our description of the pion form factor. Other topics (phi --> K anti K, the rho meson mass and width parameters) are briefly discussed. Therefore, we confirm the 3.3 sigma discrepancy between the theoretical estimate of a_mu based on e+e- and its direct BNL measurement.

Using numerical information derived in previous fits to $VPγ$ and $Ve^+e^-$ decay modes in isolation and the $ρ$ lineshape determined in a previous fit to the pion form factor, we show that all aspects of these decays can be predicted with fair accuracy. Freeing some parameters does not improve the picture. This is interpreted as a strong evidence in favor of the box anomaly in the $η/\etp$ decays, which occurs at precisely the level expected. We also construct the set of equations defining the amplitudes for $η/\etp\ra π^+ π^- γ$ and $ η/\etp \ra \ggam $ at the chiral limit, as predicted from the anomalous HLS Lagrangian appropriately broken. This provides a set of four equations depending on only one parameter, instead of three for the traditional set. This is also shown to match the (two--angle, two--decay--constant) $η-\etp$ mixing scheme recently proposed and is also fairly well fulfilled by the data. The information returned from fits also matches expectations from previously published fits to the $VPγ$ decay modes in isolation.

The corresponding function $F_π(s)$ provides nice fits of the pion form factor data from $s=-0.25$ to $s=1$ GeV$^2$. It is shown that the coupling to $K \bar{K}$ has little effects, while $\omg π^0$ improves significantly the fit quality below the $φ$ mass. All parameters, except for the subtraction polynomial coefficients are fixed from the rest of the HLS phenomenology. The fits show consistency with the expected behaviour of $F_π(s)$ at $s=0$ up to ${\cal O} (s^2)$ and with the phase shift data on $δ_1^1(s)$ from threshold to somewhat above the $φ$ mass. The $\omg$ sector is also examined in relation with recent data from CMD--2.

We study the way isospin symmetry violation can be generated within the Hidden Local Symmetry (HLS) Model. We show that isospin symmetry breaking effects on pseudoscalar mesons naturally induces correspondingly effects within the physics of vector mesons, through kaon loops. In this way, one recovers all features traditionally expected from $ρ-\omg$ mixing and one finds support for the Orsay phase modelling of the $e^+e^- \ra π^+ π^-$ amplitude. We then examine an effective procedure which generates mixing in the whole $ρ$, $\omg$, $φ$ sector of the HLS Model. The corresponding model allows us to account for all two body decays of light mesons accessible to the HLS model in modulus and phase, leaving aside the $ρ\ra ππ$ and $K^* \ra K π$ modes only, which raise a specific problem. Comparison with experimental data is performed and covers modulus and phase information; this represents 26 physics quantities successfully described with very good fit quality within a constrained model which accounts for SU(3) breaking, nonet symmetry breaking in the pseudoscalar sector and, now, isospin symmetry breaking.

We examine the mechanisms producing departures from ideal mixing for vector mesons within the context of the Hidden Local Symmetry (HLS) model. We show that kaon loop transitions between the ideal combinations of the $ω$ and $φ$ mesons necessitate a field transformation in order to get the mass eigenstates. It is shown that this transformation is close to a rotation for processes involving, like meson decays, on--shell $ω$ and $φ$ mesons. The HLS model predicts a momentum dependent, slowly varying mixing angle between the ideal states. We examine numerically the consequences of this for radiative and leptonic decays of light mesons. The mean $ω-φ$ mixing angle is found smaller than its ideal value; this is exhibited separately in radiative and in leptonic decays. Effects of nonet symmetry breaking in the vector sector are compared to those produced by the field rotation implied by the HLS model.

We present a VMD based model aiming to describe all radiative decays of light mesons. We show that the SU(3) breaking mechanism proposed by Bando, Kugo and Yamawaki (BKY), supplemented by nonet symmetry breaking in the pseudoscalar sector are sufficient to provide a nice description of all data, except the charged K* radiative width. It is also shown that nonet symmetry breaking has effects which cannot be disantangled from those produced by coupling of glue to the eta' meson. Coupling of glue to $η$ is not found to be required by the data.
Asssuming the charged K* radiative width is indeed at its presently accepted value necessitates to supplement the BKY breaking in a way which finally preserves an equivalence statement between the VMD approach to radiative decays and the Wess-Zumino-Witten Lagrangian.

We show that the Hidden Local Symmetry Model, supplemented with well-known procedures for breaking flavor SU(3) and nonet symmetry, provides all the information contained in the standard Chiral Perturbation Theory (ChPT) Lagrangian ${\cal L}^{(0)}+{\cal L}^{(1)}$. This allows to rely on radiative decays of light mesons ($VPγ$ and $P γγ$) in order to extract some numerical information of relevance to ChPT: a value for $Λ_1=0.20 \pm 0.04$, a quark mass ratio of $\simeq 21.2 \pm 2.4$, and a negligible departure from the Gell-Mann--Okubo mass formula. The mixing angles are $θ_8=-20.40^\circ \pm 0.96^\circ$ and $θ_0=-0.05^\circ \pm 0.99^\circ$. We also give the values of all decay constants. It is shown that the common mixing pattern with one mixing angle $θ_P$ is actually quite appropriate and algebraically related to the $η/η'$ mixing pattern presently preferred by the ChPT community. For instance the traditional $θ_P$ is functionally related to the ChPT $θ_8$ and fulfills $θ_P \simeq θ_8/2$. The vanishing of $θ_0$, supported by all data on radiative decays, gives a novel relation between mixing angles and the violation of nonet symmetry in the pseudoscalar sector. Finally, it is shown that the interplay of nonet symmetry breaking through U(3) $\ra$ SU(3)$\times$ U(1) satisfies all requirements of the physics of radiative decays without any need for additional glueballs.

We re-examine the problem of simultaneously describing in a consistent way all radiative and leptonic decays of light mesons (V -> P gamma, P -> V gamma, P -> gamma gamma, V -> e^+ e^-). For this purpose, we rely on the Hidden Local Symmetry model in both its anomalous and non--anomalous sectors. We show that the SU(3) symmetry breaking scheme proposed by Bando, Kugo and Yamawaki, supplemented with nonet symmetry breaking in the pseudoscalar sector, allows one to reach a nice agreement with all data, except for the K^{*+/-} radiative decay. An extension of this breaking pattern allows one to account for this particular decay mode too. Considered together, the whole set of radiative decays provides a pseudoscalar mixing angle theta_P ~ -11^o and a value for theta_V which is ~ 3^o from that of ideal mixing. We also show that it is impossible, in a practical sense, to disentangle the effects of nonet symmetry breaking and those of glue inside the eta', using only light meson decays.

We discuss the properties of vector mesons, in particular the rho^0, in the context of the Hidden Local Symmetry (HLS) model. This provides a unified framework to study several aspects of the low energy QCD sector. Firstly, we show that in the HLS model the physical photon is massless, without requiring off field diagonalization. We then demonstrate the equivalence of HLS and the two existing representations of vector meson dominance, VMD1 and VMD2, at both tree level and one loop order. Finally the S matrix pole position is shown to provide a model and process independent means of specifying the rho mass and width, in contrast to the real axis prescription currently used in the Particle Data Group tables.

We study the various existing implementations of SU(3) breaking in the Hidden Local Symmetry model for the low energy hadronic sector following a mechanism originally proposed by Bando, Kugo and Yamawaki (BKY). We pay particular attention to hermiticity and current conservation. Following this, we present a new method for including symmetry breaking effects which preserves the BKY mas s relation among vector mesons. Symmetry breaking (SB) necessarily requires a transformation of the pseudoscalar fields, which, following BKY, we refer to a s field renormalization. We examine the consequences of propagating this throug h all Lagrangian terms including the anomalous ones. We thus explore the consequences of these various SB schemes for both charged and neutral pseudoscalar decay constants as measured in weak and anomalous decays respectively.

We compare the predictions of a range of existing models based on the Vector Meson Dominance hypothesis with data on e^+ e^- -> pi^+ pi^$ and e^+ e^- -> mu^+ mu^- cross-sections and the phase and near-threshold behavior of the timelike pion form factor, with the aim of determining which (if any) of these models is capable of providing an accurate representation of the full range of experimental data. We find that, of the models considered, only that proposed by Bando et al. is able to consistently account for all information, provided one allows its parameter "a" to vary from the usual value of 2 to 2.4. Our fit with this model gives a point-like coupling (gamma pi^+ π^-) of magnitude ~ -e/6, while the common formulation of VMD excludes such a term. The resulting values for the rho mass and pi^+ pi^- and e^+e^- partial widths as well as the branching ratio for the decay omega -> pi^+ pi^- obtained within the context of this model are consistent with previous results.
