Normalizing flows are generative machine learning models which can efficiently approximate probability distributions, using only given samples of a distribution. This architecture is used to interpolate the chiral condensate obtained from QCD simulations with five degenerate quark flavors in the HISQ action. From this a model for the probability distribution of the chiral condensate as function of lattice volume, quark mass and gauge coupling is obtained. Using the model, first order and crossover regions can be classified and the boundary between these regions can be marked by a critical mass. An extension of this model to studies of phase transitions in QCD with variable number of flavors is expected to be possible.

We discuss the interplay between chiral and center sector phase transitions that occur in QCD with an imaginary quark chemical potential $μ=i(2n+1) πT/3$. Based on a finite size scaling analysis in (2+1)-flavor QCD using HISQ fermions with a physical strange quark mass and a range of light quark masses, we show that the endpoint of the line of first-order Roberge-Weiss (RW) transitions between center sectors is second order for light quark masses $m_l\ge m_s/320$, and that it belongs to the $3$-d, $Z(2)$ universality class. The operator for the chiral condensate behaves like an energy-like operator in an effective spin model for the RW phase transition. As a consequence, for any non-zero value of the quark mass, the chiral condensate will have an infinite slope at the RW phase transition temperature, $T_{RW}$. Its fluctuation, the disconnected chiral susceptibility, behaves like the specific heat in $Z(2)$ symmetric models and diverges in the infinite volume limit at the RW phase transition temperature $T_{RW}$ for any non-zero value of the light quark masses. Our analysis suggests the critical temperatures for the RW phase transition and the chiral phase transition coincide in the RW plane. On lattices with temporal extent $N_τ=4$, we find in the chiral limit $T_χ=T_{RW}=195(1)~$MeV.

Acknowledging the importance of the studies regarding the effective restoration of $U_A(1)$, I try to give a comprehensive overview about the various studies done in the last few years in a comparative manner to realize the current status of the community in this regard. I also discuss very recent efforts about the relevance of various energy-like observables w.r.t. the chiral phase transition.

We report on an ongoing study on the interplay between Roberge-Weiss (RW) and chiral transitions in simulations of (2+1)-flavor QCD with an imaginary chemical potential. We established that the RW endpoint belongs to the 3-$d$, $Z_2$ universality class when calculations are done with the Highly Improved Staggered Quark (HISQ) action in the RW plane with physical quark masses. We also have explored a range of quark masses corresponding to pion mass values, $m_π\geq40$~MeV and found that the transition is consistent with $Z_2$ universality class. We argue that observables that were usually used to determine the chiral phase transition temperature, e.g. the chiral condensate and chiral susceptibility, are sensitive to the RW transition and are energy-like observables for the $Z_2$ transition, contrary to the magnetic-like (order parameter) behavior at vanishing chemical potential. Moreover the calculations performed at $m_π\sim40$~MeV also put a stringent constraint for a critical pion mass at zero chemical potential for a possible first-order chiral phase transition.

Our findings are consistent with the occurrence of a second order chiral phase transition at vanishing values of the quark masses. The chiral phase transition temperature at this finite value of the lattice spacing is determined to be $T_c = 98_{-6}^{+3}~{\rm MeV}$. From the perspective of an effective Lagrangian in the vicinity of the chiral transition, the Polyakov loop, $P$, is an energy-like observable, and $\langle P\rangle$ should hence scale like the energy density. Using $N_f=2+1$ HISQ configurations at finite lattice spacing, we show that near the chiral transition temperature, the scaling behavior of $\langle P\rangle$ and the heavy quark free energy $F_q$ is consistent with energy-like observables in the 3-$d$, O($N$) universality class. We extend this analysis to other Polyakov loop observables, including the response of the heavy quark free energy, $F_q$, to the baryon chemical potential, which is expected to scale like a specific heat.

In this work we investigate the effective restoration of the $U_A(1)$ through the calculation of scalar and pseudo-scalar screening masses and corresponding susceptibilities, for physical and lower than physical pion masses. Calculations have been performed in (2+1)-flavor HISQ discretization scheme with a physical value of the strange quark mass. Preliminary calculations of the continuum extrapolated scalar and pseudo-scalar masses are presented, based on lattices with three different temporal extent. We present a lattice QCD based determination of the chiral phase transition temperature in QCD with two massless (up and down) and one strange quark having its physical mass. We propose and calculate two novel estimators for the chiral transition temperature for several values of the light quark masses, corresponding to Goldstone pion masses in the range of $58~{\rm MeV}\lesssim m_π\lesssim 163~{\rm MeV}$. The chiral phase transition temperature is determined by extrapolating to vanishing pion mass using universal scaling relations. After thermodynamic, continuum and chiral extrapolations we find the chiral phase transition temperature $T_c^0=132^{+3}_{-6}$ MeV. We also show some preliminary calculations that use the conventional estimator for the pseudo-critical temperature and compare with the new estimators for $T_c^0$. Furthermore, we show results for the ratio of the chiral order parameter and its susceptibility and argue that this ratio can be used to differentiate between $O(N)$ and $Z_2$ universality classes in a non-parametric manner.

While the Polyakov loop is an order parameter of the deconfinement transition in the heavy quark mass regime of QCD, its sensitivity to the deconfinement of light, dynamical quarks in QCD is not apparent. On the other hand, the quark mass dependence of the Polyakov loop is sensitive to the appearance of a chiral phase transition. Using lattice QCD calculations in the staggered fermion discretization scheme at finite values of the lattice spacing, $aT = 1/8$, we show here, for the first time, that the Polyakov loop expectation value, and the heavy quark free energy extracted from it, behave like energy-like observables in the vicinity of the chiral phase transition temperature $T_c$. Consistent with scaling behavior of energy-like observables in the 3-$d$, O(2) universality class, the quark mass derivatives diverge in the chiral limit at $T_c$ while the temperature derivatives stay finite. The latter will develop a characteristic spike at $T_c$. This, however, may be resolved only in calculations with quark masses being two orders of magnitude smaller than those currently accessible in lattice QCD calculations.

In quenched QCD the Polyakov loop is an order parameter of the deconfinement transition, but with decreasing quark mass, the peak in the Polyakov loop susceptibility becomes less pronounced, and it loses its interpretation as an indicator for deconfinement. For this $N_f=2+1$ HISQ study, we fix the strange quark mass $m_s$ at its physical value and investigate the dependence of the Polyakov loop on the light quark mass $m_l$ in the range $m_s/m_l=27-160$, following $m_l$ toward the chiral limit. In particular we will look how the inflection point and susceptibility behave as we decrease $m_l$, to see whether one finds any indication of a crossover, and therefore whether the Polyakov loop is sensitive to the chiral phase transition. Preliminary results show no signal of a crossover from the real part of the Polyakov loop in the vicinity of the chiral crossover. Closely related is an investigation of Polyakov loop correlations and the Debye mass in this limit. Preliminary results suggest little or no dependence on $m_l$.

By investigating the light quark mass dependence and the volume dependence of various chiral observables, e.g. chiral susceptibilities and Binder cumulants, no evidence for a first order phase transition in our current quark mass window is found. Two estimators $T_{60}$ and $T_δ$ are proposed to extract the chiral phase transition temperature $T_{c}^{0}$ in the chiral and continuum limit and our current estimate for $T_{c}^{0}$ is $132_{-6}^{+3}$ MeV.

We present here the results from an ongoing determination of the critical quark mass in simulations of (2+1)-flavor QCD with an imaginary chemical potential. Studies with unimproved actions found the existence of a critical quark mass value at which the crossover transition ends on a second order phase transition and becomes first order for smaller values of the quark mass for the case of both vanishing and imaginary chemical potential. We use the Highly Improved Staggered Quark (HISQ) action and perform calculations in the Roberge-Weiss (RW) plane, where the value of the critical mass is expected to be largest. The lowest quark mass value used in our simulation corresponds to the pion mass $m_π$, down to $40$ MeV. Contrary to calculations performed with unimproved actions we find no evidence for the occurrence of first order transitions at the smallest quark mass values explored so far. Moreover we also show that the chiral observables are sensitive to the RW transition. Our results also indicate that the RW transition and chiral transition could coincide in the chiral limit.

We present results for pseudo-critical temperatures of QCD chiral crossovers at zero and non-zero values of baryon ($B$), strangeness ($S$), electric charge ($Q$), and isospin ($I$) chemical potentials $μ_{X=B,Q,S,I}$. The results were obtained using lattice QCD calculations carried out with two degenerate up and down dynamical quarks and a dynamical strange quark, with quark masses corresponding to physical values of pion and kaon masses in the continuum limit. By parameterizing pseudo-critical temperatures as $ T_c(μ_X) = T_c(0) \left[ 1 -κ_2^{X}(μ_{X}/T_c(0))^2 -κ_4^{X}(μ_{X}/T_c(0))^4 \right] $, we determined $κ_2^X$ and $κ_4^X$ from Taylor expansions of chiral observables in $μ_X$. We obtained a precise result for $T_c(0)=(156.5\pm1.5)\;\mathrm{MeV}$. For analogous thermal conditions at the chemical freeze-out of relativistic heavy-ion collisions, i.e., $μ_{S}(T,μ_{B})$ and $μ_{Q}(T,μ_{B})$ fixed from strangeness-neutrality and isospin-imbalance, we found $κ_2^B=0.012(4)$ and $κ_4^B=0.000(4)$. For $μ_{B}\lesssim300\;\mathrm{MeV}$, the chemical freeze-out takes place in the vicinity of the QCD phase boundary, which coincides with the lines of constant energy density of $0.42(6)\;\mathrm{GeV/fm}^3$ and constant entropy density of $3.7(5)\;\mathrm{fm}^{-3}$.

We present results from an ongoing study of the phase diagram of (2+1)-flavor QCD using the HISQ action with smaller than physical light quark masses in the Roberge-Weiss (RW) plane on lattices with temporal extent $N_τ=4$. We find that the endpoint of the $1^{st}$ order RW transition line remains $2^{nd}$ order at least down to light quark masses corresponding to Goldstone pion masses of $55$ MeV…

We find that the endpoint of the $1^{st}$ order RW transition line remains $2^{nd}$ order at least down to light quark masses corresponding to Goldstone pion masses of $55$ MeV. Furthermore, we show that the chiral condensate is sensitive to the RW transition and may serve as a energy-like operator characterizing universal behavior close to the RW endpoint.

We present here results on the determination of the critical temperature in the chiral limit for (2+1)-flavor QCD. We propose two novel estimators of the chiral critical temperature where quark mass dependence is strongly suppressed compared to the conventional estimator using pseudo-critical temperatures. We have used the HISQ/tree action for the numerical simulation with lattices with three different temporal extent $N_τ=$6, 8, 12 and varied the aspect ratio over the range $4 \leq N_σ/N_τ \leq 8$. To approach the chiral limit, the light quark mass has been decreased keeping the strange quark mass fixed at its physical value. Our simulations correspond to the range of pion masses, 55 MeV $\leq m_π \leq$ 160 MeV.

We find that the distributions of meson correlation functions are non-Gaussian. We modify the statistical analysis to take care of the non-Gaussianity. Current day improvements in the statistical quality of data on hadron correlations further allow us to simplify certain aspects of the analysis of masses. We examine these changes through the analysis of pions and apply them to the vector meson. We compare the flow scale determined using the rho mass with that using Lambda_{MSbar}.

Scale setting for QCD with two flavours of staggered quarks is examined using Wilson flow over a factor of four change in both the lattice spacing and the pion mass. The statistics needed to keep the errors in the flow scale fixed is found to increase approximately as the inverse square of the lattice spacing. Tree level improvement of the scales t_0 and w_0 is found to be useful in most of the range of lattice spacings we explore. The scale uncertainty due to remaining lattice spacing effects is found to be about 3%. The ratio w_0/\sqrt{t_0} is N_f dependent and we find its continuum limit to be 1.106 \pm 0.007 (stat) \pm 0.005 (syst) for m_πw_0 \simeq 0.3.

Fluctuations of conserved quantum numbers are associated with the corresponding susceptibilities because of the symmetry of the system. The underlying fact is that these fluctuations as defined through the static correlators become identical to the direct calculation of these susceptibilities defined through the thermodynamic derivatives, due to the fluctuation-dissipation theorem. Through a rigorous exercise we explicitly show that a diagrammatic calculation of the static correlators associated with the conserved quark number fluctuations and the corresponding susceptibilities are possible in case of mean field theories, if the implicit dependence of the mean fields on the quark chemical potential are taken into account appropriately. As an aside we also give an analytical prescription for obtaining the implicit dependence of the mean fields on the quark chemical potential.

The main effect of the higher order interaction term is to shift the critical end point to the lower value of the chemical potential and higher value of the temperature. The fluctuations show good qualitative agreement with the lattice data.

Correlations up to second order have been measured in Lattice QCD which compares well with our estimates given the inherent difference in the pion masses in the two systems. Possible physical implications of these correlations and their importance in understanding the matter obtained in heavy-ion collisions are discussed. We also present comparison of the results with the commonly used unbound effective potential in the quark sector of this model.

We have investigated the fluctuations and the higher order susceptibilities of quark number, isospin number, electric charge and strangeness at vanishing chemical potential for 2+1 flavor Polyakov loop extended Nambu--Jona-Lasinio model. The calculations are performed for the bound effective potential in the quark sector requiring up to eight quark interaction terms. These have been contrasted to the lattice results which currently have somewhat heavier quarks in the light flavor sector. The results show sufficient qualitative agreement. For comparison we also present the results obtained with the conventional effective potential containing upto six quark interaction terms.

Flux dualization in broken SU(2)
Authors:

Abstract:
An SU(2) gauge theory is broken to U(1) by an adjoint scalar to produce magnetic monopoles. At a lower scale, this U(1) is further broken by a fundamental scalar to produce tubes of magnetic flux. We dualize the resulting theory to write an effective theory in terms of the macroscopic string variables. The monopoles are attached to the ends of the strings, and the flux is confined in the tubes.

Monopole confinement by flux tube

Abstract:
We revisit Nambu's model of quark confinement by a tube of magnetic flux, with two additional features. The quarks are taken to be magnetic monopoles external to the tube, which seal the ends, and are also taken to be fermions. This ensures that the model is inconsistent unless there are at least two species of fermions being confined.
