Abstract:
The PHENIX collaboration presents first measurements of low-momentum ($0.4<p_T<3$ GeV/$c$) direct-photon yields from Au$+$Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{_{NN}}}$=39 and 62.4 GeV. For both beam energies the direct-photon yields are substantially enhanced with respect to expectations from prompt processes, similar to the yields observed in Au$+$Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{_{NN}}}$=200. Analyzing the photon yield as a function of the experimental observable $dN_{\rm ch}/dη$ reveals that the low-momentum ($>$1\,GeV/$c$) direct-photon yield $dN_γ^{\rm dir}/dη$ is a smooth function of $dN_{\rm ch}/dη$ and can be well described as proportional to $(dN_{\rm ch}/dη)^α$ with $α{\approx}1.25$. This scaling behavior holds for a wide range of beam energies at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider and the Large Hadron Collider, for centrality selected samples, as well as for different, $A$$+$$A$ collision systems. At a given beam energy the scaling also holds for high $p_T$ ($>5$\,GeV/$c$) but when results from different collision energies are compared, an additional $\sqrt{s_{_{NN}}}$-dependent multiplicative factor is needed to describe the integrated-direct-photon yield.

Please note that version 3 on the archive is the auxiliary version of the Physics of the B Factories book. This uses the notation alpha, beta, gamma for the angles of the Unitarity Triangle. The nominal version uses the notation phi_1, phi_2 and phi_3. Please cite this work as Eur. Phys. J. C74 (2014) 3026.

Abstract:
The measurement of the so far unknown chiral-odd quark transverse spin distribution in either semi-inclusive DIS (SIDIS) or inclusive measurements in pp collisions at RHIC has an additional chiral-odd fragmentation function appearing in the cross section. The measurement of the so far unknown chiral-odd quark transverse spin distribution in either semi-inclusive DIS (SIDIS) or inclusive measurements in pp collisions at RHIC has an additional chiral-odd fragmentation function appearing in the cross section. These chiral-odd fragmentation functions (FF) can for example be the so-called Collins FF or the Interference FF. HERMES has given a first hint that these FFs are nonzero, however in order to measure the transversity one needs these FFs to be precisely known. We have used 29.0 fb$^{-1}$ of data collected by the Belle experiment at the KEKB $e^+e^-$ collider to measure azimuthal asymmetries for different charge combinations of pion pairs and thus access the Collins FF.

We show that LHC experiments might well be able to determine all the parameters required for a prediction of the present density of thermal LSP relics from the Big Bang era. If the LSP is an almost pure bino we usually only need to determine its mass and the mass of the SU(2) singlet sleptons. This information can be obtained by reconstructing the cascade $\tilde{q}_L \to \tildeχ_2^0 q \to \tilde{\ell}_R \ell q \to \tildeχ_1^0 \ell^+ \ell^- q$. The only requirement is that $m_{\tilde{\ell}_R} < m_{\tildeχ_2^0}$, which is true for most of the cosmologically interesting parameter space. If the LSP has a significant higgsino component, its predicted thermal relic density is smaller than for an equal--mass bino. We show that in this case squark decays also produce significant numbers of $\tildeχ_4^0$ and $\tildeχ_2^\pm$. Reconstructing the corresponding decay cascades then allows to determine the higgsino component of the LSP.
