Sterile neutrinos are a compelling candidate for generating neutrino masses and for elucidating the nature of dark matter. Astrophysical X-ray constraints on sterile neutrino dark matter decays, however, largely exclude the active-sterile mixing required to produce simultaneously the correct left-handed neutrino spectrum and keV-scale right-handed neutrino dark matter within a type-I seesaw framework. In this study, we demonstrate how these X-ray constraints can be circumvented through a time-dependent approach, thereby reviving a broad range of active-sterile mixing scenarios. Our minimal model incorporates two right-handed neutrinos, which form a two-component dark matter candidate, and an auxiliary scalar field that experiences a very late and still ongoing phase transition, leading to the spontaneous breaking of a global $ U(1)_N $ symmetry. Prior to this phase transition, only the right-handed neutrinos are massive, while the left-handed neutrinos remain massless because of the scalar field's vanishing expectation value. As the phase transition develops, the growing expectation value of the scalar field increases the active-sterile mixing, thereby opening dark matter decay channels and inducing neutrino masses. The time dependence allows the scenario to be consistent with X-ray constraints as well as current measurements of left-handed neutrino masses. The anticipated level of active-sterile mixing today is within the detection capabilities of the forthcoming TRISTAN (KATRIN) tritium-beta decay project. Additionally, cosmological surveys such as DESI or EUCLID and supernova neutrino observations can test the prediction of massless left-handed neutrinos prior to the phase transition.

We discuss the role of the top-quark Yukawa coupling $y_t$ concerning the hierarchy problem and construct an alternative scheme to the conventional solutions with top partners. In traditional models, like SUSY or composite Higgs, top partners cancel the top loop contribution to the Higgs quadratic term. The lack of evidence for such colored partners however drives these models into more and more fine-tuned regions. Here, an alternative means to mitigate the top loop, allowing for natural electroweak symmetry breaking, is presented. Emphasizing that we have not measured the top-Higgs interactions at high scales yet, we envisage scenarios where this interaction is only approaching its sizable strength in the infra-red, but gets strongly suppressed at high scales. We first discuss possible effects via a modification of the running of the top Yukawa coupling. Then, we turn to models where the top Yukawa is generated at one-loop level. Originated from a dimension-six operator, it drops when crossing the mass threshold of new degrees of freedom. In either case, the top partners are replaced by some new top-philic particles with strong interaction. Thus, a very different phenomenology, such as large top mass running and signals in four top final states, is introduced, which will be discussed in detail. With the assistance of this mechanism, the solution to the hierarchy problem can be pushed to a (well-defined) higher scale, and a final test of naturalness might be deferred to a 100 TeV Collider, like the FCC.

We provide a comprehensive and up-to-date analysis of the prospects to realize Dark Matter (DM) in the Inert Doublet Model, while simultaneously enhancing the Electroweak Phase Transition (EWPhT) such as to allow for electroweak baryogenesis. Instead of focusing on certain aspects or mass hierarchies, we perform extensive, yet fine-grained, parameter space scans, where we analyze the nature of the EWPhT in both the light and the heavy DM regions, confronting it with the amount of DM potentially residing in the lightest inert-doublet state. Thereby, we point out a viable region where a non-trivial two-step EWPhT can appear, without being in conflict with direct-detection bounds, which could leave interesting imprints in gravitational wave signatures. We propose new benchmarks with this feature as well as update benchmarks with a strong first-order transition in the light of new XENON1T limits. Moreover, taking into account these latest bounds as well as relevant collider constraints, we envisage a new region for light DM with a small mass splitting, lifting the usual assumption of exact degeneracy of the new non-DM scalars, such as to avoid collider bounds while providing a fair DM abundance over a rather large DM mass range. This follows from a detailed survey of the impact of co-annihilations on the abundance, dissecting the various channels.

We scrutinize the XENON1T electron recoil excess in the scalar-singlet-extended dark matter effective field theory. We confront it with various astrophysical and laboratory constraints both in a general setup and in the more specific, recently proposed, variant with leptophilic $Z_2$-odd mediators. The latter also provide mass to the light leptons via suppressed $Z_2$ breaking, a structure that is well fitting with the nature of the observed excess and the discrete symmetry leads to non-standard dark-matter interactions. We find that the excess can be explained by neutrino--electron interactions, linked with the neutrino and electron masses, while dark-matter--electron scattering does not lead to statistically significant improvement. We analyze the parameter space preferred by the anomaly and find severe constraints that can only be avoided in certain corners of parameter space. Potentially problematic bounds on electron couplings from Big-Bang Nucleosynthesis can be circumvented via a late phase transition in the new scalar sector.

This document summarises the current theoretical and experimental status of the di-Higgs boson production searches, and of the direct and indirect constraints on the Higgs boson self-coupling, with the wish to serve as a useful guide for the next years. The document discusses the theoretical status, including state-of-the-art predictions for di-Higgs cross sections, developments on the effective field theory approach, and studies on specific new physics scenarios that can show up in the di-Higgs final state. The status of di-Higgs searches and the direct and indirect constraints on the Higgs self-coupling at the LHC are presented, with an overview of the relevant experimental techniques, and covering all the variety of relevant signatures. Finally, the capabilities of future colliders in determining the Higgs self-coupling are addressed, comparing the projected precision that can be obtained in such facilities. The work has started as the proceedings of the Di-Higgs workshop at Colliders, held at Fermilab from the 4th to the 9th of September 2018, but it went beyond the topics discussed at that workshop and included further developments.

We explore a scenario where Dark Matter (DM) couples to the Standard Model mainly via a scalar mediator ${\cal S}$ that is odd under a $Z_2$ symmetry, leading to interesting collider signatures. In fact, if linear interactions with the mediator are absent the most important DM production mechanisms at colliders could lead to final states with missing transverse energy (MET) in association with at least two fermions, such as di-jet or di-electron signatures. The framework we consider is model-independent, in a sense that it is only based on symmetry and formulated in the (extended) DM Effective Field Theory (eDMEFT) approach. Moreover, it allows to address the smallness of first-generation fermion masses via suppressed $Z_2$ breaking effects. From a di-jet +MET analysis at the LHC, we find rather loose bounds on the effective ${\cal S}$-${\cal S}$-DM-DM interactions, unless the mediator couples very strongly to SM fermions, while a future $e^+ e^-$ collider, such as CLIC, could deliver tighter constraints on the corresponding model parameters, given the mediator is leptophilic. We finally highlight the parameter space that allows to produce the observed DM density, including constraints from direct-detection experiments.

Conventional approaches to describe dark matter phenomenology at collider and (in)direct detection experiments in the form of dark matter effective field theory or simplified models suffer in general from drawbacks regarding validity at high energies and/or generality, limiting their applicability. In order to avoid these shortcomings, we propose a hybrid framework in the form of an effective theory, including, however, both the dark matter states and a mediator connecting the former to the Standard Model fields. Since the mediation can be realized through rather light new dynamical fields allowing for non-negligible collider signals in missing energy searches, the framework remains valid for the phenomenologically interesting parameter region, while retaining correlations dictated by gauge symmetry. Moreover, a richer new-physics sector can be consistently included via higher-dimensional operators. Interestingly, for fermionic and scalar dark matter with a (pseudo-)scalar mediator, the leading effects originate from dimension-five operators, allowing to capture them with a rather small set of new couplings. We finally examine the correlations between constraints from reproducing the correct relic density, direct-detection experiments, and mono-jet and Higgs+missing energy signatures at the LHC.

We demonstrate how masses of new states, beyond direct experimental reach, could nevertheless be extracted in the framework of effective field theory (EFT), given broad assumptions on the underlying UV physics, however not sticking to a particular setup nor fixing the coupling strength of the scenario. The flat direction in the $g_\ast$ vs. $M$ plane is lifted by studying correlations between observables that depend on operators with a different $\hbar$ scaling. We discuss the remaining model dependence (which is inherent even in the EFT approach to have control over the error due to the truncation of the power series), as well as prospects to test paradigms of UV physics. In particular, we provide an assessment of which correlations are best suited regarding sensitivity, give an overview of possible/expected effects in different observables, and demonstrate how perturbativity and direct search limits corner possible patterns of deviations from the SM in a given UV paradigm.

We explore the space of the five parameters $κ_λ$, $κ_{t}$, $c_2$, $c_g$, and $c_{2g}$ in terms of the corresponding kinematics of the final state, and describe a partition of the space into a limited number of regions featuring similar phenomenology in the kinematics of $HH$ final state. We call clusters the sets of points belonging to the same region; to each cluster corresponds a representative point which we call a benchmark. We discuss a possible technique to estimate the sensitivity of an experimental search to the kinematical differences between the phenomenology of the benchmark points and the rest of the parameter space contained in the corresponding cluster. We also provide an analytical parametrization of the cross-section modifications that the variation of anomalous couplings produces with respect to standard model $HH$ production along with a recipe to translate the results into other parameter-space bases. Finally, we provide a preliminary analysis of variations in the topology of the final state within each region based on recent LHC results.

We demonstrate via a realistic phenomenological analysis that couplings of such a resonance to the Higgs boson can be constrained in a meaningful way in future runs of the LHC, providing insights on its origin and its relation to the electroweak symmetry breaking sector. Moreover, the final state can provide a direct way to determine whether the new resonance is produced predominantly in gluon fusion or quark-anti-quark annihilation. The analysis focusses on a resonance coming from a scalar field with vanishing vacuum expectation value and its decay to a photon pair. It can however be straightforwardly generalised to other scenarios.

Motivated by the tantalizing excesses recently reported in the di-photon invariant mass spectrum at the LHC, we scrutinize some implications of scalar di-photon resonances in high energy proton-proton collisions. In particular, indications of a large width impose several challenges for model building. We show how calculability and unitarity considerations severely limit possible perturbative realizations of such a signal and propose a simple criterion that can be adapted to any renormalizable model. Furthermore, we discuss correlations between a di-photon excess and precision observables, including the anomalous magnetic and electric dipole moments of quarks and leptons, neutral meson oscillations and radiative flavor changing neutral current mediated decays of heavy leptons and hadrons. We find that existing searches and measurements significantly constrain the possibilities for a scalar resonance decaying into final states involving Standard Model fermions. We propose future search strategies which could elucidate some remaining currently unconstrained decay channels and discuss possible correlations between the di-photon excess and several recently reported flavor anomalies, showing that the latter can be addressed in a new incarnation of a gauged $U(1)^\prime$ model, with the di-photon resonance being the physical remnant of the $U(1)^\prime$-breaking field.

We demonstrate that the inclusion of a realistic lepton sector can relax significantly the upper bound on top partner masses in minimal composite Higgs models, induced by the lightness of the Higgs boson. To that extend, we present a comprehensive survey of the impact of different realizations of the fermion sectors on the Higgs potential, with a special emphasis on the role of the leptons. The non-negligible compositeness of the $τ_R$ in a general class of models that address the flavor structure of the lepton sector and the smallness of the corresponding FCNCs, can have a significant effect on the potential. We find that, with the $τ_R$ in the symmetric representation of $SO(5)$, an increase in the maximally allowed mass of the lightest top partner of $\gtrsim 1$ TeV is possible for minimal quark setups like the MCHM$_{5,10}$, without increasing the tuning. A light Higgs boson $m_H \sim(100-200)$ GeV is a natural prediction of such models, which thus provide a new setup that can evade ultra-light top partners without ad-hoc tuning in the Higgs mass. Moreover, we advocate a more minimal realization of the lepton sector than generally used in the literature, which still can avoid light partners due to its contributions to the Higgs mass in a different and very natural way, triggered by the seesaw mechanism. This allows to construct the most economical $SO(5)/SO(4)$ composite Higgs models possible. Using both a transparent 4D approach, as well as presenting numerical results in the 5D holographic description, we demonstrate that, including leptons, minimality and naturalness do not imply light partners. Leptonic effects, not considered before, could hence be crucial for the viability of composite models.

We derive the constraints that can be imposed on the dimension-6 effective theory extension of the Standard Model, using gluon fusion-initiated Higgs boson pair production at the LHC. We use a realistic analysis focussing on the $hh \rightarrow (b\bar{b}) ( τ^+ τ^- )$ final state, including initial-state radiation and non-perturbative effects. We include the statistical uncertainties on the signal rates as well as conservative estimates of the theoretical uncertainties. We first consider a theory containing only modifications of the trilinear coupling, through a $c_6 λ\, H^6/ v^2$ Lagrangian term, and then examine the full parameter space of the effective theory, incorporating current bounds obtained through single Higgs boson measurements. We also consider an alternative scenario, where we vary a smaller sub-set of parameters. Allowing, finally, the values of the other coefficients to vary within \textit{projected} experimental ranges, we find that the currently unbounded parameter, $c_6$, could be constrained to lie within $|c_6| \lesssim 0.6$ at 1$σ$ confidence, at the end of the high-luminosity run of the LHC (14~TeV) in the full model, and to $-0.6 \lesssim c_6 \lesssim 0.5$ in the alternative model. This study constitutes a first step towards the inclusion of multi-Higgs boson production in a full fit to the dimension-6 effective field theory framework.

To measure the Yukawa couplings of the up and down quarks, Y_{u,d}, seems to be far beyond the capabilities of current and (near) future experiments in particle physics. By performing a general analysis of the potential misalignment between quark masses and Yukawa couplings, we derive predictions for the magnitude of induced flavor-changing neutral currents (FCNCs), depending on the shift in the physical Yukawa coupling of first-generation quarks. We find that a shift of -100% in the down-quark Yukawa Y_d would generically result in ds transitions in conflict with Kaon physics. This could already be seen as evidence for a non-vanishing direct coupling of the down quark to the newly discovered Higgs boson. The non-observation of certain, already well-constrained, processes is thus turned into a powerful indirect measure of physical parameters of the effective Standard-Model, which are so far basically unconstrained from experiment and extremely challenging to access with other methods. In particular, we can already deduce that Y_d should vary at most by ~50% from its Standard Model value, barring an alignment of new physics effects with the SM Yukawa couplings. Such an (orthogonal) alignment scenario is however in general much easier to test at the LHC. Similarly, improvements in limits on FCNCs in the up-type quark sector can lead to valuable information on the physical Yukawa coupling of the up-quark.

We will show that these describe the relevant physics in the fermion sectors in a simplified and transparent way. In contrast to previous studies of composite models, the impact of a realistic lepton sector on the Higgs decays is taken into account.

A global fit to the recent B->K*mu+mu- data shows indications for a large new-physics contribution to the Wilson coefficient of the semi-leptonic vector operator. In this article we consider a simple Z'-boson model of 3-3-1 type that can accommodate such an effect without violating any other constraint from quark-flavour physics. Implications for yet unobserved decay modes such as B->Xsnunubar and longstanding puzzles like B->piK are also discussed. The Z'-boson masses required to address the observed anomaly lie in the range of 7 TeV. Such heavy Z' bosons evade the existing bounds from precision data and direct searches, and will remain difficult to discover even at a high-luminosity LHC. The potential of an ILC as well as the next generation of low-energy parity-violation experiments in constraining the Z'-boson parameter space is also examined.

Recently LHCb has announced a discrepancy of 3.7 sigma in one of the theoretically clean observables accessible through studies of angular correlations in B->K*mu+mu-. We point out that in the most minimal Z' setup that can address this anomaly there is a model-independent triple-correlation between new physics (NP) in B->K*mu+mu-, B_s-Bbar_s mixing, and non-unitarity of the quark-mixing matrix. This triple-correlation can be cast into a simple analytic formula that relates the NP contribution DeltaC9 to the Wilson coefficient of the semileptonic vector operator to a shift in the mass difference DeltaM_{B_s} and a violation of |Vud|^2+ |Vus|^2+ |Vub|^2 = 1. In contrast to the individual observables the found relation depends only logarithmically on the Z' mass. We show that that our findings allow for useful future tests of the pattern of NP suggested by the B->K*mu+mu- anomaly.

We study the effects of extended fermion sectors, respecting custodial symmetry, on Higgs production and decay. The resulting protection for the Z->b_L b_L and Z->τ_Rτ_R decays allows for potentially interesting signals in Higgs physics, while maintaining the good agreement of the Standard Model with precision tests, without significant fine-tuning. Although being viable setups on their own, the models we study can particularly be motivated as the low energy effective theories of the composite Higgs models MCHM_5 and MCHM_10 or the corresponding gauge-Higgs unification models. The spectra can be identified with the light custodians present in these theories. These have the potential to describe the relevant physics in their fermion sectors in a simplified and transparent way. In contrast to previous studies of composite models, we consider the impact of a realistic lepton sector on the Higgs decays. We find significant modifications in the decays to τleptons and photons due to the new leptonic resonances. While from a pure low energy perspective an enhancement of the channel pp->h->γγturns out to be possible, if one considers constraints on the parameters from the full structure of the composite models, the decay mode into photons is always reduced. We also demonstrate that taking into account the non-linearity of the Higgs sector does not change the qualitative picture for the decays into τ-leptons or photons in the case of the dominant Higgs production mechanism.

We consider the ratio of cross sections of double-to-single Higgs boson production at the Large Hadron Collider at 14 TeV. Since both processes possess similar higher-order corrections, leading to a cancellation of uncertainties in the ratio, this observable is well-suited to constrain the trilinear Higgs boson self-coupling. We consider the scale variation, parton density function uncertainties and conservative estimates of experimental uncertainties, applied to the viable decay channels, to construct expected exclusion regions. We show that the trilinear self-coupling can be constrained to be positive with a 600/fb LHC dataset at 95% confidence level. Moreover, we demonstrate that we expect to obtain a ~+30% and ~-20 uncertainty on the self-coupling at 3000/fb without statistical fitting of differential distributions. The present article outlines the most precise method of determination of the Higgs trilinear coupling to date.

We calculate the ttbar forward-backward asymmetry, A_FB^t, in Randall-Sundrum (RS) models taking into account the dominant next-to-leading order (NLO) corrections in QCD. At Born level we include the exchange of Kaluza-Klein (KK) gluons and photons, the Z boson and its KK excitations, as well as the Higgs boson, whereas beyond the leading order (LO) we consider the interference of tree-level KK-gluon exchange with one-loop QCD box diagrams and the corresponding bremsstrahlungs corrections. We find that the strong suppression of LO effects, that arises due to the elementary nature and the mostly vector-like couplings of light quarks, is lifted at NLO after paying the price of an additional factor of alpha_s/(4 pi). In spite of this enhancement, the resulting RS corrections in A_FB^t remain marginal, leaving the predicted asymmetry SM-like. As our arguments are solely based on the smallness of the axial-vector couplings of light quarks to the strong sector, our findings are model-independent and apply to many scenarios of new physics that address the flavor problem via geometrical sequestering.
