netbsd-9 is the old stable branch, what is going to be
the 9.4 release.
netbsd-10 is in the latest stable branch and
will become NetBSD 10.1.
HEAD is the developement
version (aka "bleeding edge" or "current").

Third-party software is available from pkgsrc. Follow the quickstart guide to set up pkgsrc. On NetBSD CURRENT use binary packages for NetBSD 10.
