The latest Mordor Intelligence report predicts a booming future for the GCC foodservice industry! Market Size Surge: The foodservice industry in the GCC is expected to reach a staggering $98 billion USD by 2029, growing from an estimated $54 billion USD in 2024. That's a CAGR (compound annual growth rate) of 12.37%! The five biggest players Americana Restaurant, Albaik, Kudu, Lulu Group & Alshaya. While Alshaya leads the market share with 0.58% and over 4,000 outlets, the market remains fragmented. Independent small chains and family-owned businesses are a major force! Saudi Arabia takes the biggest slice of the market at 51%. But UAE – boasts the highest CAGR (17.1%) for the next five years! The fastest-growing sub-segment will be cloud kitchens, projected to reach a sizzling 16% CAGR. But – full-service restaurants still reign supreme with a dominant 46% share.

Shares of supermarket chain Spinneys’ franchisee in the UAE and Oman (Spinneys 1961 Holding) soared on its trading debut on Thursday, after the company raised $375m (Dhs1.38bn) from its initial public offering (IPO) that attracted orders worth $19bn. Spinneys 1961 Holding’s shares started trading at Dhs1.70, against its IPO price of Dhs1.53, the top end of the company’s planned price range, rising as much as 11 per cent before dropping slightly to Dhs1.59 as at 12.15 pm GST. The company’s IPO attracted two cornerstone investors in Emirates International Investment Company (EIIC), the strategic investment arm of Abu Dhabi-based National Holding, and Franklin Templeton. Discounters like VIVA are now transforming the UAE market and eroding the market share of mainstream brands. A large percentage of the brands UAE discounters stock are exclusive to them, sourced in bulk, and direct from the manufacturer. This allows them to pass the savings on to shoppers. Announcements season has begun. Earlier this week I was very proud to sign off on the first Sprudel Mangrove Forest. As a team, we planted the first 100 mangroves with the help of Karen Storey, Malathi De Saram and The Storey Group. Mangrove trees act as a carbon bank – capturing four times more carbon than rainforests and locking it deep in their roots, keeping the harmful gas from entering the atmosphere. Scientific studies have found that Mangroves absorb carbon 2 – 4 times greater than mature tropical forests and contain the highest carbon density of all terrestrial ecosystems. It is estimated that one mangrove tree removes 308kg (0.3 tonnes) of CO2 from the atmosphere over its growth life, which is 12.3kg per year. By planting these 100 mangroves, we are helping remove approximately 1.23 tonnes of carbon from the atmosphere a year. Which is the same as driving around 11,181km in a standard new car (based on the average new car in the EU emitting 110g CO2/km), equivalent of driving: - from The Burj Khalifa in Dubai to The Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque in Abu Dhabi and back over 44 times - or, from my house to the Sprudel - the planet-friendly water company office in Motor City and back over 475 times! Over the last decades, the restaurant industry has been very successful in the KSA (and in the Middle East in general). There’s been a diversification across growing segments, and also an increment in the sophistication level of operators as the penetration of chains has doubled over the last twenty years. If the brand is local there may be a struggle to set up SOPs, bring systems up to global standards, and gain traction for brand recognition. If the brand is international, there will be challenges to manage regional supply chains, achieve a successful brand translation, adapt marketing and technology, comply with customs and labor laws, and resonate with regional cultures and audiences. The hospitality business is complex, margins are shrinking, and customer loyalty is a struggle as it never was. But there’s also plenty of opportunity and paths to successfully operate in this ”new normal”. #restaurants #ksa #middleeast
