In India The Software Engineer's Guidebook is published by the book publisher Shroff Publishers. Since the book has been out, it's been the consistent best seller for this publisher in the country! Pinch me! (This is especially true as Shroff Publishers & Distributors Pvt. Ltd. publish a lot of other tech books, including many O'Reilly titles). But given I self-published the book, why go with a publisher, for the same, English version of the book? A few reasons: 1. Amazon KDP (Kindle Direct Printing) does not do print-on-demand in India  2. The feedback on print-on-demand services is mixed (low quality prints, for the most part)  3. Printers in India work with different sizes than many other parts of the world. So the book needed to be reformatted and resized (e.g. the India version is more pages, as it's a smaller print! Plus it is a tiny bit longer: as it has dedicated intro for the India version that the international one does not!) If I would have wanted to self-publish: it would have meant finding a local printer, reformatting the books, doing test prints, verifying quality. This is what a publisher does - and then some more, thanks to knowing the local market (e.g. helping set the price, given the printing and distribution costs, list it on other popular channels like Flipkart, and so on.) Although I was hesitant to work with a publisher - as a self-published book! - this worked out very nicely with Schroff. REPORT | Generative AI's ability to produce new content and insights based on existing data is transforming human-computer interaction. However, this transformation raises challenges of gender bias. In our latest publication, "A Literature Review on Generative AI and Gender Bias in India," Meghna Bal, Mohit Chawdhry, and Noyanika Batta examine gender bias across the generative AI value chain and recommend measures that can help mitigate gender bias in India.   The paper reviews academic work and reports from international organisations to understand the different manifestations of gender bias across the generative AI value chain, from problem formulation to real-world deployment. It suggests several measures to mitigate gender bias, including:   1. Deploying disclosures/warning labels informing users that genAI systems can produce biased outputs 2. Developing robust standards for red-teaming through a multi-stakeholder process 3. Incorporate mechanisms allowing consumers to mold their interactions with generative AI and provide feedback on biased outputs 4. Creating incentives to increase corporate governance and workforce diversity to aid bias identification and mitigation 5. 🎯 HOW DID AN EDTECH COMPANY SUCCESSFULLY HAVE A LOWER CUSTOMER ACQUISITION COST (CAC)? 🎯 The following are takeaways gathered from a blog on Optimized CAC that was published by Kerala Digital Marketing Agency in May 2023. ➡ Before 2020, the CAC for edtech companies in India was around 20% to 25% of revenue. This is not so bad especially if the company has stabilized a good gross margin to cover for the opex. ➡ By 2020, the CAC significantly rose to about 70% to 80% of revenue.😮 This naturally meant lower margins. Ouch. ➡ In India, there are 3 categories of edtech companies: 1. Super brands, e.g. Unacademy, Byju's (although recently, Byju's was reported to have significantly dropped in its valuation) 2. Funded edtech sellers that have funding for ads 3. Personal brands and organically built company brands ❓ Can you guess which of these 3 categories would generally have the lowest CAC? 💡 If you answered Number 3 Personal brands and organically built company brands, you got it right! ⏩ An example cited by Kerala Digital is PW (PhysicsWallah), which was succeeded in having a low customer acquisition cost (CAC). 🤷‍♂️ So, how did Physics Wallah make it happen? 🖊 Its founder, Alakh Pandey (PhysicsWallah), provided engaging and informative physics lectures via social media platforms. 🖊 The personalized nature of its approach is the brand value that distinguishes it from others in a commoditized edtech market. 🖊 Their distribution channels can capture students without running ads. ✴ For online learning companies that are looking at keeping CAC to a minimum, the organic approach might serve you well. Of course, this does not mean you should just concentrate on a single acquisition channel, because doing so would also place you at some level of risk.
