The number of ships docking at Aqaba escalated by 15% to 865, up from 750 the previous year, highlighting the port's resilience and strategic position in ensuring continuous maritime traffic through the Red Sea. This positive trend, reported by Aqaba Company for Ports Operation & Management, is reflected in the overall cargo throughput, which saw an 8% increase to approximately 5.15 million tons. Notably, grain imports rose by 9% and passenger traffic surged by 50%, with vehicle traffic also climbing from 31,000 to 46,000 vehicles within the same timeframe. Kuwait to Establish Maritime Industrial Port in Southern Region Shipping Arabia, April 16, 2024 — A significant development is underway in Kuwait's southern region with plans to establish a maritime industrial port, as reported by local media. This initiative, first proposed in 2014 under the "Development of the Southern Region" study, is being revived in alignment with Kuwait's Third Structural Plan. The project aims to enhance the industrial landscape and logistics framework of the area. Reda Al-Senary of Al Rai Newspaper, reports that the Border Committee has officially confirmed the location of the port within Kuwaiti borders, setting the stage for the project's initiation. Designed to support the southern industrial area extensively, this project extends beyond mere profitability to catalyze regional development. The Kuwaiti Ports Authority, in collaboration with the Public Authority for Industry, is leading this ambitious project. An MOU signed on May 20, 2020, specifies the port's intended activities, which include the relocation of grain and cement suction from Shuwaikh Port, and the establishment of facilities for shipbuilding, repair, and maintenance. Notably, the Kuwait Flour Mills and Bakeries Company has expressed interest in constructing silos and a mill within the port's premises. Strategically situated near the Kuwaiti-Saudi border in the Nuwaiseeb area, the port's location was chosen for its optimal access to main roads and proximity to the Gulf Railway project. The port's extensive layout will feature a food security area, a shipbuilding basin, a general cargo station, and an industrial cluster, facilitating a wide range of industrial and logistic operations. The food security area will span approximately 430,000 square meters, featuring an 800-meter-long quay with three large silos and service buildings. The shipbuilding basin will house two dry docks for large and medium-sized vessels, plus space for open areas, warehouses, and offices. Additionally, the general cargo station will cover 650,000 square meters, including a 500-meter-long quay and extensive storage facilities. The industrial cluster area will be equipped to house heavy industries such as iron and aluminum production, alongside several buildings estimated to cover about 430,000 square meters. The establishment of this maritime industrial port is poised to enhance the supply of bulk materials essential for constructing new cities and fostering industrial development throughout southern Kuwait. It also aims to boost the local industry index by providing necessary infrastructure to attract and nurture local and international investments, thereby creating diverse job opportunities and supporting export operations. This project represents a significant step in Kuwait's long-term strategy to enhance its logistics sector and reinforce its role as a pivotal economic player in the region. Yemen's Ministry of Transport Announces New Maritime Training Center Shipping Arabia, June 4, 2024 — In a significant development aimed at boosting the maritime sector's capabilities, the Ministry of Transport of Yemen has established a new Maritime Training and Qualification Center at the Arabian Sea Ports Authority. Announced by His Excellency Dr. Abdulsalam Saleh Humeid, Minister of Transport, this initiative aligns with the ministry's strategic goal to enhance institutional operations and workforce skills across Yemen's maritime facilities. The new center, decreed under ministerial order number (10) for the year 2024, is a direct result of proposals by the Acting Chairman-CEO of the Arabian Sea Ports Authority. It will operate under the Yemeni Arabian Sea Ports Authority, maintaining administrative and financial independence yet under the close oversight of the Minister of Transport. Designed to bolster the professional standards of employees at the Arabian Sea Ports Authority and associated ports in Shabwah, Al Mahrah, and the Socotra Archipelago, the center will offer competency certification courses for various maritime roles including captains and marine engineers. Additionally, the center will provide training across administrative, financial, and technical domains pertinent to maritime operations. Discussions focused on enhancing sector infrastructure and streamlining operations to foster a revitalized maritime industry in Syria. Participants advocated for critical measures: introduction of a unified entry card for maritime workers at Tartus Port, establishment of clearer regulations by the Ministry of Internal Trade and Consumer Protection regarding the commercial registry for maritime entities, and the creation of efficient dredging and shipbuilding facilities at Tartus Port. These steps aim to reduce bureaucratic hurdles and optimize the port’s commercial potential. Minister Khuzaym highlighted the extensive damage to the transport sector from years of conflict, with losses estimated at no less than 147 billion US dollars and destruction impacting up to 80% of infrastructure. He emphasized the urgent need for collaborative efforts between public and private sectors to rehabilitate and enhance maritime transport facilities, including plans to deepen Latakia Port to accommodate vessels up to 75,000 tons. Mohammad Jamal Othman, President of the Syrian Chamber of Shipping, called for united efforts to navigate the sector’s challenges, particularly in light of ongoing sanctions and difficult economic conditions facing Syria. He stressed the importance of maintaining and enhancing operational standards of Syrian ports to ensure they remain competitive on an international scale.
