'That whereof we cannot speak, thereof we must remain silent,' argued Ludwig Wittgenstein, arguably the greatest philosopher of the past century, in the closing statements of his 'Tractatus Logico-Philosophicus' (1921).
This paper addresses Ludwig Wittgenstein's discussion of solipsism in the Tractatus Logico-Philosophicus. It demonstrates that, throughout his early and middle periods, Wittgenstein's work on solipsism was focused on traditional solipsism, not semantic solipsism as is standardly supposed.
As Schuman shows, this impulse persists throughout Wittgenstein's career, despite significant methodological distinctions between the Investigations and his first work, the Tractatus Logico-Philosophicus (originally published in 1921).
In the Tractatus Logico-Philosophicus, Wittgenstein's main concern centers on the nature of language and its relation to the world.
