A part of the grant also went toward a print media campaign in an Albany newspaper, Legislative Gazette, to show that NYSPHA as well as the State University of New York Board of Trustees supported legislation for all SUNY campuses to be tobacco free.

The APHA Affiliate targeted the city of Troy because it was looking to work with primary care sites that served low-income residents, said Erin Sinisgalli, MPH, MCHES, co-executive director of NYSPHA and an APHA member.

"The NYSPHA felt it was important to apply for the accreditation grant because we truly believe in our mission to advance best practices in public health, and assist in promoting and protecting community health and the environment," said Alleyne, who is an APHA member and director of epidemiology and public health planning at Rockland County Department of Health in Pomona, N.Y.

Leading a cross-sectoral team of public health organizations, NYSPHA will work to ensure that doctors have the proper tools to screen for obesity and to make referrals, said Sinisgalli, who is an APHA member.
