Recently, however, Eric
Hayot in his important book On Literary Worlds has made a new move in this divided field by acknowledging that 'no-one has a very good theory of the world', and suggesting instead a method focused on 'the ontology of composed works' and thence to an 'understanding of worldedness as an aesthetic and cultural phenomenon--as a symptom and as a compass for the history, in other words, of totality as a function of the human imagination'.
In this sense, Borges's Sinology is a form of Sinography, "a reflection on the conditions, assumptions, and logic of a set of disciplinary and cultural practices in the study of China" (
Hayot, Saussy and Yao vii).
