Functional status represents the ability to perform basic activities of daily living (ADL), such as bathing, dressing, transferring from bed to chair, using the toilet, and remaining continent (Abraham et al., 1999; Graf, 2006; HIGN, 2000; Kresevic & Mezey, 1997; Palmer, 1995).

Mauk's Gerontological Nursing: Competencies for Care (2006), which focuses on American Association of Colleges of Nursing (AACN) and Hartford Institute for Geriatric Nursing (HIGN) competencies (2006), was selected, with journal articles used to augment the text.

The AACN and HIGN have suggested that global aging is necessary content in baccalaureate nursing education.

For example, undergraduate clinical faculty are required to complete two HIGN online education modules on how to best incorporate care of the older adult into clinical teaching.
