The researchers examined the relationship among age of diabetes onset, duration of disease, and cardiovascular risk using data from the British Regional Heart Study (
BRHS), a prospective assessment of cardiovascular disease in 7,735 white men aged 40-59 years at enrollment in 1978-1980 who were recruited from general practices in 24 British towns.
Administrators at
BRHS, an all-male Catholic school, feel that they have a responsibility to educate the whole student, even if that means imposing strict conduct rules, reports the Detroit-Free Press (9/28/09).
Sattar and colleagues (12) reported on incident cardiovascular disease and diabetes in 4812 non diabetic individuals in the prospective study of pravastatin in the elderly at risk (PROSPER) and 2737 non diabetic men in the British Regional Heart Study (
BRHS) and compared hazard ratios of the cardiovascular disease in those with the metabolic syndrome or its individual components at 3.2 yr follow up (Table).
Sattar and his associates analyzed data from their Prospective Study of Pravastatin in the Elderly at Risk (PROSPER) and corroborated the data in another prospective study, the British Regional Heart Study (
BRHS).
