1975

Founded as the Association of Sleep Disorders Centers

1987

Renamed as American Sleep Disorders Association

1995

Sleep medicine recognized by the AMA as a self-designated practice specialty

1997

Granted a seat in the AMA House of Delegates

1998

Established the Sleep Medicine Education & Research Foundation

1999

Renamed as American Academy of Sleep Medicine (AASM)

2002

Moved national office to Chicago, Illinois

2005

Launched the Journal of Clinical Sleep Medicine

2010

Built a new national office in Darien, Illinois

2020

Established the Sleep Health Caucus in the U.S. Congress

Patient Advocacy Roundtable

The AASM Patient Advocacy Roundtable is a partnership between the AASM and patient organizations supporting and advocating for patients with sleep disorders to advance shared goals and improve awareness, advocacy, education, and patient care.

In a collaborative effort, the Roundtable seeks to address shared goals, support the activities of all participating patient organizations, and further the reach of each organization’s individual mission. The Roundtable will address issues affecting patients and implement strategies to continue to support and amplify the patient’s voice.
