A compelling call to embrace the countercultural values of Jesus, which lead to a life of love, peace, and fulfillment, from the bestselling author of The Deeply Formed Life, winner of the Christianity Today Book Award.

“In The Narrow Path, Rich unpacks what living our best life truly looks like. This book is a much-needed heart checkup for every Jesus follower.”—Christine Caine, founder of A21 and Propel Women

We live in a culture that wants it all. More is seen as better—whether it’s more money, social media fame, choices, or power. For those chasing this way of life, “narrow” seems negative. Who wants to narrow their options . . . or be seen as narrow-minded?

Which is why the most well-known talk in the history of the world—the Sermon on the Mount—is also the most paradoxical one. In it, Jesus holds up the narrow path as the most spacious . . . and the broader path as the more confining one.

Rich Villodas, bestselling author of
The Deeply Formed Life, explores what today’s broad and narrow paths look like so you can discern which one you’re on. The answer may surprise you—and will help you pursue the way of Jesus more deeply when it comes to loving God and others, prayer, sexual desire, conflict, money, anxiety, and more.

The Narrow Path reintroduces the counterintuitive wonder of Jesus’s timeless wisdom for this age, one fraught with anxiety, depression, polarizing politics, and online vitriol. The path of Jesus is most certainly narrow, but it is the only one filled with the ever-expanding life of God . . . and it is available now for all who want it!

Editorial Reviews

Review

“In The Narrow Path, Rich unpacks what living our best life truly looks like. By challenging some of our most basic assumptions about what it is to walk with Jesus and by inviting us to discover whether we are on the broad or narrow path . . . This book is a much-needed heart checkup for every Jesus follower.”—Christine Caine, founder of A21 and Propel Women

“A book written for all those ‘who are weary of anchoring their lives in the unfulfilling promises of the surrounding culture,’ those who find the broad way, essentially, ‘do whatever you want and follow the crowd,’ to be revealing itself as exactly what Jesus warned—a path toward death, not life—and those who are interested, intrigued, and deeply drawn to the possibility of Jesus and his narrow way.”
—John Mark Comer, author and founder of Practicing the Way

“If you’re tired of the choice between a half-Christian, conscience-quieting religion and an exhausting, guilt-inducing moralism, this book is for you. With a map through Jesus’s Sermon on the Mount, Rich Villodas leads us to the narrow path and shows us how to find joy on that road. You won’t regret the trip!”
—Russell Moore, editor-in-chief of Christianity Today

“Rich Villodas is one of the necessary voices of our time. As we wrestle to understand how Jesus speaks to our current day, Rich makes the words of Christ accessible. Leaders like him are rare. This book is needed.”
—Lecrae, Grammy Award–winning artist and producer

“Brilliant and beautiful, concise and clear,
The Narrow Path helps us remember again the words of our Lord that lead us to the liberating reality of a world in which less is more, in which the hard work of obedience leads to durable joy, and in which the love of Jesus is to be discovered and dwelt in while we travel this road together as a body of fellow pilgrims.”—Curt Thompson, MD, psychiatrist and author of The Deepest Place and The Soul of Shame

“This is Rich Villodas at his pastoral best. Challenging and confronting, these are pastoral reflections for everyone, calling us to the narrow path toward an expansive life.”
—Glenn Packiam, lead pastor of Rockharbor Church and author of The Resilient Pastor and The Intentional Year

“By bringing laser focus to the manifesto of our faith—the Sermon on the Mount—Pastor Rich edifies us anew with the wonderful, subversive love of Christ. With clarity, wisdom, and wit, he reminds us that God’s ways are the ways of life, joy, love, and peace—the truly good life.”
—Danai Gurira, actress, playwright, and activist

“This biography of the Jesus Way reset me on his way again. I hope and pray it sets and resets you on the Way. But my real hope is that it would become all our autobiographies. This book won’t just do you good; it will do the world good.”
—Archbishop Justin Welby, Archbishop of Canterbury

Thoughtful teaching on the Sermon on the Mount
As always, Rich brings a thoughtfulness to interpreting Scripture and this book is no different! Rich does in a way that doesn’t set him above the reader, but invites us to join him in trying to live out this teaching.I’ve long believed we should start here in the Christian life and I’m thankful Rich took this Sermon on the Mount and delivered a wonderful book to challenge us into a more Christ-like person.

Pastor Rich Villodas has such a clear yet profound writing style. This is the first book I read from him. It probably won't be the last. The way he explains Jesus' central teachings on the sermon on the Mount is very illuminating and insightful. For me, his chapter on "judgment" is the one I was captured by the most. I always believed that Jesus' teachings on the Sermon of the Mount are the most important to implement if a Christian truly desires to become a completely faithful disciple. You don't hear many pastors preaching from the Sermon on the Mount, so this book is very relevant and necessary for the Church today. Anyone who reads this book will be tremendously rewarded.

This is a powerful, timely message navigating the subversive way of Jesus at a time when "American Christianity" desperately needs to hear that way of Christ is not through the powers of this world by through the power of God's Spirit.
This book is easy to read and hard to put down. Rich connects the text of Sermon on the Mount with modern metaphors and stories that make it understandable for modern readers. He challenges the reader to explore the depth of Christ's teachings and reminds us that the Beatitudes define those who are already living in the kingdom of God. I especially appreciated his reminder that hiddenness is a spiritual virtue that many of us have forgotten, but it was essential for Jesus.
This book is filled with embodied practices that engage the reader to not just think about out to follow narrow (focused) path of Jesus, but to walk in the Way of it.

I was delighted to pick up Rich's third book after reading and leading small groups through the first two. I love how Rich writes and communicates. Rich takes his time to lead us back to "The Narrow Path" and the way of Jesus. Very quickly I was in tears as I looked at our gracious Heavenly Father and the life we have when we abide in Him. Rich carefully calls us higher. With gentle correction and guidance like a shepherd, Rich reminds the reader that 'the narrow path' is the best and God-given path for us all. Can't wait to read the book over again and discuss it in community.

Wisdom is hard to find. Understanding and discernment? They're fragile in today's world. "Seek the ancient paths," says the scripture.

Villodas goes back to the teaching of Jesus to draw out universal principles of a good life - counter to the world's values and advice. Some of his insights will be familiar. Others will make you pause and take inventory of your own expectations.

Well worth considering - where you are and where you long to be. Take this one along on a day or more of retreat and reflection.

This is a great addition to Rich's other books that dives into - in a rather transformative way - what it really means to live a truly blessed life. Rich unpacks the Beatitudes, giving emphasis to the beauty of hiddenness and the power of living with humility and love. His insights on pursuing righteousness and embracing weakness are equal parts challenging and encouraging. There is a great blend of deep spiritual truths and practical advice that makes this an impactful read, and a 'must' for anyone seeking a deeper, more authentic walk with Jesus. I highly recommend it to anyone looking to grow in their faith and understanding of the narrow path Jesus calls us to follow.

Hi - fellow Dummy here - this book doesn't just share information about the Narrow Path, and the broad one I tend to find myself walking on... It redirects, lights the step, and outlines how to get back on highlighting the original source, Jesus.

Radical, practical, relatable. This book firmly held words from the greatest message ever told and broke it down for a broken world...making the Narrow Path timely.

For every walk of life and everyone with a beating heart; for everyone seeking, searching, knocking...this read is for you/us.

5.0 out of 5 stars This Truly is the Better Way
Reviewed in Canada on July 19, 2024
This book is a penetrating and persuasive reminder that there is a better way, not easier, not less costly, not less fraught with demanding decisions, but better because it promises to satisfy your deepest longings. The better way is the Narrow Path that paradoxically leads to, as the author describes it, “a spacious life”.

Rich Villodas walks with you—not in front to harangue you, not behind to prod you—but beside you to help you hear what the greatest sermon ever spoken sounds like through your 21st century ears.

Most books have their best stuff up front, and you have to slog through many fluff-filled chapters to get to the end. This book is different. Stay on the ride all the way. It starts off strong and keeps getting richer and more rewarding the farther you go. At the end, you’ll find clear instructions on how to make God-glorifying decisions, and you’ll learn what “Do Not Judge” really means, and how to truly love your enemies.

This author’s third book is replete with personal, vulnerable anecdotes, illuminating illustrations, trenchant quotations, and it contains a spillover of wisdom he’s lifted from a deeper well. It’s clear he has thought deeply about the messages in this sermon and, more importantly, he has spent many intimate hours with Jesus.

Wouldn’t you like to see how life-changing taking the Narrow Path can be for you, too?

It’s pretty incredible and will be a gift to anyone trying to figure out what following Jesus looks like in our cultural moment.

“The narrow way of Jesus gets to the core of what it means to be human, what it means to love well. It focuses our energy on what truly leads to the good life: a spacious kind of existence that makes room for God and others.”
