iPadOS 18 makes it easier to choose and add emoji when typing in iPhone apps

The experience of using iPhone apps on the iPad isn’t exactly great, but things got better with Stage Manager, since apps not optimized for iPhone can run in floating windows on the screen. But with iPadOS 18, Apple has made a small but important change to improve the use of iPhone apps on the iPad, and it’s all about emoji.

Apple likes to call Apple Intelligence ‘AI for the rest of us.’ By giving AI features to its massive base of existing iPhone, iPad, and Mac users, the company has the unique opportunity to make AI mainstream. One Apple Intelligence feature coming later this year—but not yet available in the iOS 18.1 beta—is Genmoji. Genmoji let you use AI to create emoji for any occasion.

Proposed iOS 18 emoji for approval by Unicode

Today the Unicode Consortium previewed the new emoji that are expected to be added to Apple’s upcoming OS updates, including iOS and iPadOS 18, watchOS 11, and more. Though the list isn’t finalized yet, it’s likely that everything outlined will be approved and added to the official set of emoji that platform owners like Apple and Google will adopt.

One standout from the list is a new ‘face with bags under eyes’ emoji that makes me feel truly seen. It’s undoubtedly bound to be one of the most popular additions. Other new emoji include a shovel, fingerprint, beet, and more.

These new emoji are coming to iPhone in iOS 17.4

Apple is updating the iPhone with even more emoji characters. iOS 17.4 introduces new ways to express approval or denial, break through the chains, rise from the ashes, or just express that limes are superior to lemons. There’s also a mushroom that looks less out of Mario World and more out of the grocery store.

The new emoji characters are also available in macOS 14.4 on the Mac, watchOS 10.4 for Apple Watch, and iPadOS 17.4 for iPad. For Apple Vision Pro owners, they appear in visionOS 1.1 developer beta.

The draft candidates for the Unicode Consortium’s Emoji 14.0 release are up for approval and Emojipedia has shared a great look at many of the new emoji that could come to iPhone over the next year. Seven new faces are in the mix like melting face and face with peeking eye, with other candidates including heart hands, person with crown, troll, low battery, x-ray, biting lip, and many more.

Update 9/15: Unicode 14.0/Emoji 14.0 has been finalized with the list remaining the same from the draft we first saw back in July.
