The Junkies is a DIY sitcom. There was no commissioning editor, no broadcaster and no top comedy company involved, just a team of people who worked for no money and very little food. Writers Jane Bussmann and David Quantick wanted to make a comedy about the three stupidest heroin addicts in the world. They teamed up with producer Jess Search and director Ian Denyer and three actors looking for potentially suicidal projects: Sally Phillips, Peter Baynham and Peter Serafinowicz.
A traditional half hour comedy costs 200,000 in crew, locations, studio, cast, script and someone to go to Starbucks every five minutes for no reason. The Junkies was completed on a budget of 3,500. Anything we didn't have to pay for we didn't use or we borrowed or begged for free. Costumes came from second hand shops, props were found in skips and the catering budget went on cheese sandwiches and economy biscuits. The show was filmed on a tight 3 days schedule in a filthy former Junky's flat. It saved paying for a studio and kept the art department expenses to a minimum - the place was perfect, even if it did put the crew off their cheese sandwiches.
