In the six weeks since Protestiram began its latest series of protests, support has flowed in from Macedonians across the world.
Following President Gjorge Ivanov’s decision on April 12 to pardon all politicians facing criminal investigations as a result of the 2015 wiretapping revelations, the civic movement started rallying on a near-nightly basis in Skopje.
Marches have since taken place in various towns and cities across the country. Many pro-government counter-protests have also taken place.
However, backing for the Protestiram movement has not been confined to Macedonians within the country.
Days after President Ivanov’s announcement, support came from Macedonians in the United States, where expatriates waved placards and flags outside the Macedonian embassy in Washington.
In a message posted on the movement’s main Facebook page on April 17, Alexei Demjanski wrote: “We, as citizens of the Republic of Macedonia in the diaspora, loudly and clearly express our dissatisfaction with the situation in Macedonia.”
