University of Illinois Springfield

  1. Student Union

    The Student Union, full of light and activity, is the newest building and is the hub and heart of campus. In this vibrant focal point for life at UIS, students interact with each other and with faculty, staff and visitors. The award-winning building features areas for lounging and studying and houses UIS Food Service. The Student Union will quickly become one of your favorite places on campus to reset, relax and refuel.

  2. Student Union Interior

    Inside the Student Union, the Student Leadership Center, located on the first floor, links students with volunteer opportunities and more than 70 student organizations. The Student Leadership Center is also home to the Student Government Association and is a space for students to organize and lead programs. You'll also find a gaming room, sports grill, ballroom and conference and meeting rooms, as well as outdoor spaces featuring cozy fire pits. The Food Studio provides a variety of choices to meet any dietary need or preference, and a full-service Starbucks keeps campus caffeinated.

  3. TRAC

    The Recreation and Athletic Center, or TRAC, is the heart of exercise and sports at UIS. All UIS students are invited to use the workout facilities at TRAC, including free weights, cardio and weight machines, the indoor track, and the racquetball and squash courts. Campus Recreation, also located at TRAC, offers intramural sports, outdoor adventure trips, group fitness classes, personal trainers and equipment to check out, including bikes and kayaks. There is no shortage of activities to help you connect, stay active and have fun.

  4. Basketball Court

    TRAC is home to UIS Athletics, with 17 teams competing in the NCAA Division II Great Lakes Valley Conference in baseball, softball, basketball, cross country, track and field, tennis, golf, soccer and volleyball. Our Athletics program's mission is to shape our student-athletes into productive, service-minded leaders and center the athletics experience on academic achievement, pursuit of championships, and community outreach. Our student-athletes are champions in the classroom and in competitions. They are often recognized for their academic excellence, and our teams are consistently successful in one of the most competitive conferences in the nation.

  5. University Hall Building

    University Hall Building, or UHB, is home to business and liberal arts academic programs, the Admission office, Financial Aid, Records and Registration, University Bursar, Military and Veteran Student Services, the ID Center, classrooms, a computer lab, faculty and administrative offices and public lounge areas. This beautiful, contemporary building is centrally located on the quad, not far from the Student Union and other academic buildings. Many students will have classes in this building while at UIS.

  6. Classroom inside UHB

    UIS is a leader in experiential learning, and our classrooms reflect this with state-of-the-art technology. A 13-to-1 student-to-faculty ratio ensures each learner receives a personal and engaging experience to set them up for academic success. UIS faculty are deeply committed to teaching and their areas of expertise. In fact, 86% hold the highest degree in their field. This classroom setting includes an interactive smartboard, LCD projector and flat panel screens to enhance learning so you have a dynamic classroom experience.

  7. Founders Residence Hall

    Forget the outdated idea of cramped residence hall rooms! Freshmen and sophomores in the modern Founders and Lincoln residence halls enjoy spacious four-person suites. A suite consists of two furnished double rooms with a shared bathroom. Laundry is available onsite, along with free WIFI and cable, and the support of Resident Assistants. All students living on campus have the opportunity to be part of a themed living-learning community. These communities bring students together who might have shared experiences or similar interests to support their academic and social experiences at UIS. Founders Residence Hall is also the home to the UIS Esports Arena, a cutting-edge esports gaming facility that allows students to game recreationally with friends or virtually compete against other collegiate teams throughout the United States.

  8. Townhouses

    UIS offers juniors and seniors two-story furnished townhouses with proximity to all amenities on campus, such as workout facilities, Food Service, the library and academic spaces. They include four-bedrooms and two-bathrooms and feature an open floor plan, spacious living areas, cathedral-style ceilings and full, modern kitchens. In addition to the townhouses and residence halls, two-, three-and four-bedroom fully furnished apartments and family housing accommodations are also available on campus.

  9. Rec Park

    Rec Park, located across the street from the townhouses and residence halls, is an outdoor space to enjoy a game of basketball, sand volleyball, bags or even mini golf. Rec Park is also home to many intramural sports and popular annual events like RecPalooza and Springfest, organized by Campus Recreation. It also serves as a gathering place for students to grill, swing or throw a Frisbee.

  10. Public Affairs Center Lobby

    The Public Affairs Center opened in 1981 and houses the performing arts center at UIS, including the lower-level Studio Theatre and Sangamon Auditorium, home to the annual Broadway series, the Illinois Symphony Orchestra, and UIS Music program performances. Also located in the PAC are the UIS Bookstore, public affairs academic programs, offices of the Chancellor and Provost, and the Sangamon Experience—a contemporary exhibit space featuring rotating installations highlighting the Sangamon Region of Illinois open to the campus and the community.

  11. Performing Arts Center

    The UIS Performing Arts Center in the Public Affairs Center includes two performance venues. The 2,000-seat Sangamon Auditorium opened in 1981 to establish a performing arts space in Illinois' capital city. Sangamon Auditorium is the only venue of its kind and size in the region, drawing 75,000 attendees to 150 events annually for nationally recognized performances. The smaller 124-seat UIS Studio Theatre on the lower level of the Public Affairs Center is home to the UIS Theatre program and other smaller performances. It features state-of-the-art live-streaming capabilities, allowing us to broadcast events worldwide.

  12. Brookens Library

    Brookens supports teaching, learning, scholarship and community on campus and online. Enjoy the contemporary common areas and collaborative workspaces. Access the physical collection, archival materials and electronic resources, including a robust digital collection. Consult with expert librarians and request resources through state- and nationwide interlibrary loans. Students love our Library of Things collection, where you can check out THINGS—like a Go Pro, small kitchen appliances and more than 50 board games.

  13. Brookens Library Exterior

    Norris L. Brookens Library Building, fondly known as Brookens, opened in 1975 as the first permanent structure at UIS. Many students enjoy the benefits of Wi-Fi and views of the quad from its outdoor spaces.

    One side of Brookens houses the library and Information Technology Services. On the other side are classrooms and offices, including education and human services academic progams, internship services, Study Away programs, and the Center for Advising and Academic Success, which includes free tutoring and a writing center.

  14. Shakespeare Garden

    The UIS campus boasts beautiful outdoor spaces for relaxing and studying, including our Shakespeare Garden near Brookens Library. Here, a life-sized bronze sculpture of the writer relaxes on a garden bench and invites you to sit beside him to rest or take a picture. The themed garden features plants often mentioned in his work. Explore it and the other beautiful spaces across campus, and discover your personal favorite.

  15. NPR Illinois/WUIS Studio

    UIS is home to NPR Illinois, a fully-operational news radio station that reaches more than 600,000 people. NPR Illinois delivers in-depth multimedia news reports, expert analysis on statewide issues, and engagement events—all upholding the philosophy and integrity of public journalism. UIS students have the unique opportunity to immerse themselves in public journalism as volunteers, interns and sometimes in staff positions. Graduates of the award-winning UIS Public Affairs Reporting program, created by former UIS faculty member, Illinois legislator and Congressman Paul Simon, are a natural fit for this amazing campus and community resource.

  16. Athletic Training Classroom

    The School of Health Sciences provides bachelor's programs in Medical Laboratory Science and Exercise Science and a master's program in Athletic Training. These disciplines have some of the most innovative, hands-on classroom and lab learning spaces on campus, located in the Student Life Building. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics expects employment of athletic trainers to grow 23% by 2026, much faster than all other occupations. Our state-of-the-art diagnostic tools and spaces bring learning to life in these disciplines and prepare you for certification in a quickly growing field.

  17. UIS Field Station

    Located near campus, the UIS Field Station at Lake Springfield provides exciting opportunities for hands-on, field-based learning and research in the physical and natural sciences. The lakeside setting also lends itself to creative pursuits, such as photography, drawing and writing. The roles Lake Springfield plays within the community provide research opportunities in diverse fields, including sociology, anthropology, economics and history. Use of the Field Station is not limited to classes; the setting offers an inspiring getaway to think, write, read or create. The field station also supports a range of outdoor recreation activities, such as fishing, birding, canoeing and kayaking.

  18. Visual and Performing Arts Building

    The Visual and Performing Arts building is home to the Art, Music and Theatre department. This workspace exemplifies the hands-on approach and exploration of creativity experienced by UIS students...whether your concentration is in the arts, or you're interested in a well-rounded university experience including art, music and theater.

    This area of campus also includes other buildings that are home to the Diversity and Women's centers. UIS is committed to celebrating diversity, making every student feel included and welcome. The university is a place where people from different cultures and experiences learn together and where all voices are heard and embraced as an important part of our community.

  19. Health and Sciences Building

    The Health and Sciences Building, or HSB, is home to many of the sciences, such as Biology, Chemistry and Medical Lab Science, as well as the Orion Lab, a high-tech research laboratory that features 3D printers, laser cutters and engravers, fabrication equipment and more. You can also enjoy the UIS Visual Arts Gallery at HSB or relax by the Japanese koi pond near the quad. Koi were donated by the Illinois Governor's Mansion and provide a serene spot enjoyed by our students and employees.

  20. Colonnade

    The Colonnade is the symbolic focal point of the UIS quad. It is 23 feet high with 12 pillars arranged in a circle and includes fountains and seating. The quad is located in the heart of campus and is the picture-perfect spot for students to relax or socialize between classes. It's often the location for outdoor student programs, fairs and recreation opportunities. Also on the quad between the Public Affairs Center and University Hall Building, you'll see The Young Lawyer, a life-sized statue of Abraham Lincoln. He's often dressed to celebrate special occasions on campus.
