Meet Daisy Hernandez: Your Graduate Student Advisor to the Dean and Chancellor
Graduate Studies is excited to introduce Daisy Hernandez as the 2021-2022 Graduate Student Advisor to the Dean and Chancellor (GSADC). Hernandez is a fourth year Ph.D. candidate in plant pathology and will serve as the primary student representative for graduate students at UC Davis, serving as a voice for graduate student concerns, needs and perspectives.

Chancellor’s Postdoctoral Fellow Studies the Chemical Communication of Cats
Congratulations to Connie Rojas, Ph.D., a postdoc researcher who was named a 2021-2022 Chancellor’s Postdoctoral Fellow. Rojas works in Professor Jonathan Eisen’s laboratory where she studies the evolution and function of scent gland microbiomes in cats. Learn more about her research.

18 Year Old BME Ph.D. Candidate is Finalist for Global Student Prize
After completing his undergraduate degree at 15, Tanishq Abraham joined the UC Davis biomedical engineering program to study machine learning, artificial intelligence, and pathology. He is now a finalist for a $100,000 international prize intended for students who make a positive impact on society.

Apply for 2022-2023 UC Davis Internal Fellowships!

The application for the 2022-2023 Internal Fellowship Competition for UC Davis continuing academic graduate students is now open. Apply for more than 125 fellowships valued at approximately $3 million dollars. We recommend all eligible continuing academic graduate students apply on an annual basis. 

National Defense Science and Engineering Graduate (NDSEG) Fellowships
Deadline: Nov. 19 | Learn More and Apply
Fellowships provide full tuition and fees, a stipend of $38,400, and a $5,000 travel budget. Up to 500 three-year graduate fellowships will be awarded. U.S. citizens, nationals, and dual-citizens may apply. Applicants must be in the first or second year of doctoral study.

Apply to the $50K Innovator Fellowship
Deadline: Nov. 19 | Learn more and apply
This is a $50K 6-month opportunity. Postdocs and Ph.D. students interested in food/agriculture/health innovations are encouraged to apply. This is an immersive experience gaining real-world knowledge from venture capital groups. Funding includes six months' salary, tuition, travel, conference, and research expenses.

DOD Science, Mathematics and Research for Transformation (SMART) Scholarship

The SMART scholarship-for-service program provides funding to master’s and Ph.D. students pursuing STEM disciplines. Students receive full tuition, monthly stipends, health insurance and book allowances, and summer internships at DOD labs and agencies. After graduation scholars work in a civilian position at the sponsoring facility.

Ruth L. Kirschstein Individual NRSA Fellowship (F30, F31, F31 Diversity, F32)

NIH NRSA awards support the training of biomedical, behavioral, and clinical researchers through individual pre- and postdoctoral fellowships. The fellowship provides a stipend and partial tuition and fee support.

Ford Foundation Fellowships

The foundation seeks to increase the diversity of the nation’s college and university faculties by increasing their ethnic and racial diversity, to maximize the educational benefits of diversity, and to increase the number of professors who can and will use diversity as a resource for enriching the education of all students.

NOAA Margaret A. Davidson Graduate Fellowship

The National Estuarine Research Reserves offers two-year fellowships for M.S. or Ph.D. students with research projects in estuarine science and coastal management. The projects must be conducted in one of the 29 research reserves and should contribute to one of the reserve’s priority management areas.

Autism Speaks Pre/Post-Doctoral Fellowship
Letter of Intent due: December 14 | Learn more and apply
Autism Speaks anticipates funding one pilot research award at up to US $60,000 (one year), one predoctoral fellowship award at up to US $40,000/yr (two years), and one postdoctoral award at up to US $55,000/yr (two years) focused on understanding, evaluating and/or treating individuals with central auditory processing disorder (CAPD), particularly as it relates to autism spectrum disorder (ASD). Application due: February 16, 2022.

Call for Nominations: 2021 Outstanding Graduate Students Teaching Award
This award recognizes the contributions of graduate students to teaching and learning at UC Davis. Any member of the campus community with direct experience with the graduate student’s teaching can initiate nominations, including undergraduates. Self-nominations are allowed. Initial nominations are due March 26, 2022 and the final deadline for all nominee application materials is April 18, 2022. Submit your nominations now.


Graduate Studies Winter Closures and Adjusted Hours
During the months of November and December, Graduate Studies and the Graduate Center will have modified hours to account for holidays, events, and limited staff coverage. Review the schedule changes and the dates the building will be closed to the public. 

Graduate Center Winter Quarter Hours
The Graduate Center will extend its operating hours beginning Monday, January 3. The new hours are: Monday–Thursday, 8 am–7pm; and Friday, 8 am–5 pm. Thank you to those who have provided facility feedback thus far. We will continue to alter our operations based on feedback to best meet our graduate community needs.

Keep Them Engaged! Active Learning for Student Success

Research shows that active learning in the classroom increases student learning and motivation, and it also plays a significant role in the retention of first-year college students. This interactive workshop highlights evidence-based strategies for promoting active learning and interaction. Participants will learn about the importance of active learning and come away with activities they can apply immediately to their instruction.

Empowerment for Scholars Against Sexual Harassment

Despite growing efforts to make academia a more equitable space, sexual harassment remains a major problem that runs rampant across institutions, academic fields, and scholarly settings. The overarching goal of this workshop is to empower trainees against sexual harassment in academia by understanding the scope of the problem, knowing about rights and possible action plans, and learning trauma-informed mental wellness strategies to promote advocacy for themselves or others.

Getting to the Point: Communicating the Value of Your Research

Join the GradPathways Institute for a workshop that will help you uncover the broader relevance of your work, connect with varied audiences, and communicate what you do and why it matters.  You will even be prepared to compete in research-focused competitions like Grad Slam!

Complete Conflict Competence Training for Graduate Students and Postdocs
Dec. 3 | 10 a.m.-1:30 p.m. | Learn more and register
With proven conflict management techniques, you can minimize the negative impact of conflict, keep relationships on track and lower your stress. In this live workshop, you will learn and practice strategies to effectively prevent and manage conflict. Techniques covered include: de-escalating emotionally-charged situations, successfully communicating your needs and lowering others’ defenses. You will have the opportunity to put these strategies into practice by developing approaches to realistic conflict scenarios.
