About BBC Programme Index

This site contains the BBC’s listings information from 1922 to the present day.

The information is derived from three sources: The data that informs BBC iPlayer and BBC sounds pages (referred to as “PIPs”) and data from BBC Genome (taken from scans of the BBC’s former listings magazine, Radio Times) and information derived from contemporary newspapers and BBC documentation, for the period in 1922-3 when Radio Times had not started publication, and the 11 weeks between the 1920s and 1980s when Radio Times, for various reasons, was not published.

There are millions of programme listings on the BBC’s Programme Index. In some cases, these will link through to programmes you can watch and listen to elsewhere on the BBC website, but most of the listings remain text-only. You can also look at scans of the original issues of Radio Times between 1923 and 1959 on the website.

All listings contain at the very least a programme title, broadcast channel and transmission time, but most listings also contain programme synopses and contributor details.

This is a historical record of the planned output and the BBC services of any given time. It should be viewed in this context and with the understanding that historical listings reflects the attitudes and standards of their time - not those of today.
