Enhancing CERN-SPS slow extraction efficiency: meta Bayesian optimisation in crystal shadowing
/ Velotti, Francesco (CERN) ; Matheson, Eloise (CERN) ; Esposito, Luigi Salvatore (CERN) ; Fraser, Matthew (CERN) ; Solis Paiva, Santiago (CERN) ; Kain, Verena (CERN)
The Super Proton Synchrotron at CERN serves the fixed-target experiments of the North Area, providing protons and ions via slow extraction, and employs the crystal shadowing technique to significantly minimize losses. Over the past three operational years, the use of a crystal, positioned upstream of the electrostatic septum to shadow its blade, has allowed to achieve a 25% reduction in losses. [...]

Demonstration of non-local crystal shadowing at the CERN SPS

The main SPS users are the experiments installed in North experimental Area (NA) which are served with a continuous 4.8 s long spill of protons and heavy ions. A third-integer resonant slow extraction is used to provide a uniform, long spill. [...]

Reduction of Resonant Slow Extraction Losses with Shadowing of Septum Wires by a Bent Crystal
/ Velotti, Francesco (CERN) ; Fraser, Matthew (CERN) ; Goddard, Brennan (CERN) ; Kain, Verena (CERN) ; Scandale, Walter (CERN) ; Stoel, Linda (CERN)
A new experiment, SHiP, is being studied at CERN to investigate the existence of three Heavy Neutral Leptons in order to give experimental proof to the proposed neutrino minimal Standard Model. High-intensity slow-extraction of protons from the SPS is a pre-requisite for SHiP. [...]

The Use of a Passive Scatterer for SPS Slow Extraction Beam Loss Reduction
/ Goddard, Brennan (CERN) ; Balhan, Bruno (CERN) ; Borburgh, Jan (CERN) ; Fraser, Matthew (CERN) ; Stoel, Linda (CERN) ; Velotti, Francesco (CERN)
A significant reduction in the fraction of protons lost on the SPS electrostatic septum ES during resonant slow extraction is highly desirable for present Fixed-Target beam operation, and will become mandatory for the proposed SHiP experiment, which is now being studied in the framework of CERN's Physics Beyond Colliders program. In this paper the possible use of a passive scattering device (diffuser) is investigated. [...]

Exploitation of Crystal Shadowing via Multi-Crystal Array, Optimisers and Reinforcement Learning
/ Velotti, Francesco (CERN) ; Di Castro, Mario (CERN) ; Esposito, Luigi Salvatore (CERN) ; Fraser, Matthew (CERN) ; Gilardoni, Simone (CERN) ; Goddard, Brennan (CERN) ; Kain, Verena (CERN) ; Matheson, Eloise (CERN)
The CERN Super Proton Synchrotron (SPS) routinely delivers proton and heavy ion beams to the North experimental Area (NA) in the form of 4.8 s spills. To produce such a long flux of particles, resonant third integer slow extraction is used, which, by design, foresees primary beam lost on the electrostatic septum wires to separate circulating from extracted beam. Septum shadowing by means of a bent crystal to reduce slow extraction beam loss
/ Velotti, Francesco Maria (CERN) ; Esposito, Luigi Salvatore (CERN) ; Fraser, Matthew Alexander (CERN) ; Kain, Verena (CERN) ; Gilardoni, Simone (CERN) ; Goddard, Brennan (CERN) ; Pari, Michelangelo (CERN) ; Prieto, Javier (CERN) ; Rossi, Roberto (CERN) ; Scandale, Walter (CERN) et al.
The flux of high-energy protons slow-extracted from the CERN Super Proton Synchrotron (SPS) is limited by the induced radioactivity caused by the beam loss intrinsic to the extraction process. Methods to substantially increase the efficiency of the extraction process are of great interest to fulfill requests for an increasing flux of 400 GeV protons to the present experiments, located in the North Area of the SPS, and also for potential future experiments with very high demanded protons on target. Feasibility of using crystal channeling for the beam loss mitigation in slow extraction at 8GeV
/ Nagaslaev, V (Fermilab) ; Tropin, I (Fermilab) ; Esposito, L (CERN) ; Fraser, M (CERN) ; Goddard, B (CERN) ; Velotti, F (CERN) ; Bandiera, L (Ferrara U.) ; Guidi, V (Ferrara U.) ; Mazzolari, A (Ferrara U.) ; Romagnoni, M (Ferrara U.) et al.
In the accelerator applications of slow extraction for High Energy Physics (HEP), one of the prime challenges is the mitigation of beam losses, which is becoming increasingly critical with the continuous rise in beam power. A significant breakthrough was achieved earlier at CERN through the successful deployment of proton beam channeling in a crystal at 400 GeV, effectively diverting the beam away from extraction septa and offering new avenues for improving slow extraction efficiency. Slow extraction loss reduction with octupoles at the CERN SPS
/ Stoel, Linda (CERN) ; Bartosik, Hannes (CERN) ; Benedikt, Michael (CERN) ; Fraser, Matthew (CERN) ; Goddard, Brennan (CERN) ; Kain, Verena (CERN) ; Velotti, Francesco (CERN)
The powering of octupoles during third-integer resonant slow extraction has been studied and recently tested with beam at the CERN Super Proton Synchrotron (SPS) in order to increase the extraction efficiency and reduce the induced radioactivity of the extraction straight. The octupoles distort the particle trajectories in phase space in such a way that the extracted separatrix is folded, which decreases the particle density impinging the wires of the extraction septum at the expense of increasing the extracted beam emittance.
