Modelling the Radioactivity Induced by Slow-Extraction Losses in the CERN SPS / Fraser, Matthew (CERN) ; Björkman, Daniel (CERN) ; Cornelis, Karel (CERN) ; Goddard, Brennan (CERN) ; Kain, Verena (CERN) ; Schicho, Philipp (CERN) ; Theis, Christian (CERN) ; Vincke, Helmut (CERN)
Resonant slow extraction is used to provide an intense quasi-DC flux of high-energy protons for the Fixed Target (FT) physics programme at the CERN Super Proton Synchrotron (SPS). The unavoidable beam loss intrinsic to the extraction process activates the extraction region and its equipment. [...]

SPS Slow Extraction Losses and Activation: Challenges and Possibilities for Improvement / Fraser, Matthew (CERN) ; Balhan, Bruno (CERN) ; Bartosik, Hannes (CERN) ; Bertone, Caterina (CERN) ; Björkman, Daniel (CERN) ; Borburgh, Jan (CERN) ; Conan, Nadine (CERN) ; Cornelis, Karel (CERN) ; Garcia Alia, Ruben (CERN) ; Gatignon, Laurent (CERN) et al.
In 2015 the highest integrated number of protons in the history of the North Area was slow extracted from the CERN Super Proton Synchrotron (SPS) for the Fixed Target physics programme. At well over 1.10¹⁹ protons on target (POT), this represented the highest annual figure at SPS for almost two decades, since the West Area Neutrino Facility was operational some 20 years ago. [...]

Alternative material choices to reduce activation of extraction equipment / Björkman, Daniel (CERN) ; Balhan, Bruno (CERN) ; Borburgh, Jan (CERN) ; Esposito, Luigi Salvatore (CERN) ; Fraser, Matthew (CERN) ; Goddard, Brennan (CERN) ; Stoel, Linda (CERN) ; Vincke, Helmut (CERN)
At CERN, the Super Proton Synchrotron (SPS) is equipped with a resonant slow extraction system in Long Straight Section 2 (LSS2) towards the fixed target (FT) beam lines in the North Area. The extraction region provides the physics experiments with a quasi-DC flux of high-energy protons over a few seconds, which corresponds to tens of thousands of turns. [...]

Slow extraction loss reduction with octupoles at the CERN SPS / Stoel, Linda (CERN) ; Bartosik, Hannes (CERN) ; Benedikt, Michael (CERN) ; Fraser, Matthew (CERN) ; Goddard, Brennan (CERN) ; Kain, Verena (CERN) ; Velotti, Francesco (CERN)
The powering of octupoles during third-integer resonant slow extraction has been studied and recently tested with beam at the CERN Super Proton Synchrotron (SPS) in order to increase the extraction efficiency and reduce the induced radioactivity of the extraction straight. The octupoles distort the particle trajectories in phase space in such a way that the extracted separatrix is folded, which decreases the particle density impinging the wires of the extraction septum at the expense of increasing the extracted beam emittance. [...]

Characterization of the PTW 34031 ionization chamber (PMI) at RCNP with high energy neutrons ranging from 100 – 392 MeV / Theis, C (CERN) ; Carbonez, P (CERN) ; Feldbaumer, E (CERN) ; Forkel-Wirth, D (CERN) ; Jaegerhofer, L (CERN) ; Pangallo, M (CERN) ; Perrin, D (CERN) ; Urscheler, C (CERN) ; Roesler, S (CERN) ; H Vincke (CERN) et al.
Radiation monitoring at high energy proton accelerators poses a considerable challenge due to the complexity of the encountered stray radiation fields. These environments comprise a wide variety of different particle types and span from fractions of electron-volts up to several terra electron-volts. [...]

ActiWiz 3 – an overview of the latest developments and their application / Vincke, H (CERN) ; Theis, C (CERN)
In 2011 the ActiWiz code was developed at CERN in order to optimize the choice of materials for accelerator equipment from a radiological point of view. Since then the code has been extended to allow for calculating complete nuclide inventories and provide evaluations with respect to radiotoxicity, inhalation doses, etc. [...]

The SPS Beam Dump Facility / Lamont, Mike (CERN) ; Arduini, Gianluigi (CERN) ; Battistin, Michele (CERN) ; Brugger, Markus (CERN) ; Calviani, Marco (CERN) ; Dos Santos Pedrosa, Fernando (CERN) ; Fraser, Matthew (CERN) ; Gatignon, Laurent (CERN) ; Gilardoni, Simone (CERN) ; Goddard, Brennan (CERN) et al.
The proposed SPS beam dump facility (BDF) is a fixed-target facility foreseen to be situated at the North Area of the SPS. Beam dump in this context implies a target aimed at absorbing the majority of incident protons and containing most of the cascade generated by the primary beam interaction. [...]
