The CERN Linear Accelerator for Research (CLEAR) is a test facility delivering an electron beam in the 30-220 MeV energy range to a diverse user community. In 2022, several hardware and software upgrades were done to the main installation, and procedures and methods were developed to address specific user requirements, including a further extension of the beam parameter ranges. Beam instrumentation for real time FLASH dosimetry: experimental studies in the CLEAR facility
/ Rieker, Vilde (CERN ; Oslo U.) ; Malyzhenkov, Alexander (CERN) ; Aksoy, Avni (Ankara U. ; CERN) ; Bateman, Joseph (Oxford U. ; CERN) ; Korysko, Pierre (Oxford U. ; CERN) ; Corsini, Roberto (CERN) ; Farabolini, Wilfrid (CERN) ; Adli, Erik (Oslo U.) ; Sjobak, Kyrre (Oslo U.) ; Wroe, Laurence (CERN) et al.
Real-time dosimetry for ultra-high dose-rates (UHDR) and Very High Energy Electrons (VHEE) is a challenge which is currently being studied using the electron beam at CERN Linear Accelerator for Research (CLEAR). These studies are motivated by the demand for reliable dosimetry for FLASH radiotherapy. [...]

Beam performance and operational efficiency at the CERN Proton Synchrotron

The injectors for the LHC at CERN underwent a major upgrade during a recent two-year long shutdown in the framework of the LHC Injectors Upgrade (LIU) project. Following this upgrade, the Proton Synchrotron (PS) was restarted in 2021, with the same beam quality as before the upgrade quickly achieved or surpassed. [...]

Beam loading effects in standing-wave linacs and their implementation into the particle tracking code RF-Track
/ Olivares Herrador, Javier (CERN ; Valencia U., IFIC) ; Latina, Andrea (CERN) ; Fuster, Nuria (Valencia U., IFIC) ; Gimeno-Martinez, Benito (Valencia U., IFIC) ; Esperante, Daniel (Valencia U., IFIC)
Accelerating technology is evolving towards compactness and high intensity. In such a scenario, beam loading effects result in significant energy losses for long trains of bunches. [...]

Intrabeam scattering simulation with a novel hybrid-kinetic Monte Carlo method for linear accelerators
/ Desire Valdor, Paula (CERN ; Groningen U.) ; Gerbershagen, Alexander (Groningen U.) ; Latina, Andrea (CERN)
Recent studies have identified intra-beam scattering (IBS) as one of the processes that can have a significant impact on the beam dynamics of linacs with high-density and low-energy beams, such as in free electron sources (FELs), where IBS appears to be one of the effects that most limits their performance. Most existing simulation codes have been developed for circular lattices or assume Gaussian beams and thus cannot accurately simulate the desired scenario. [...]

Experimental generation of the transversely uniform electron bunches at the CLEAR facility at CERN
/ Malyzhenkov, Alexander (CERN) ; Latina, Andrea (CERN) ; Aksoy, Avni (Ankara U.) ; Robertson, Cameron (Oxford U. ; CERN) ; Dyks, Luke (CERN) ; Burrows, Philip (Oxford U.) ; Korysko, Pierre (Oxford U. ; CERN) ; Corsini, Roberto (CERN) ; Farabolini, Wilfrid (CERN)
Electron beams with a flat-top transverse distribution are highly desired for uniform dose delivery in irradiation applications, like studies of radiation damage to electronics and radiotherapy, as well as for potential applications in the improvement of light sources. In this work, we report on the optimization of the electron photocathode injector parameters which allow such uniform distributions to be reached. [...]

A compact water window X-ray source based on inverse Compton scattering

X-rays in the water window (2.33 nm to 4.40 nm wavelength) can be used to provide high quality images of wet biological samples. Given the limited availability of current generation light sources in this energy range, table-top water window X-ray sources have been proposed as alternatives. [...]

Variable polarization self-locked streaking of electrons in time with a pair of corrugated structures
/ Malyzhenkov, Alexander (CERN) ; Latina, Andrea (CERN) ; Gilardi, Antonio (CERN) ; Aksoy, Avni (CERN) ; Korysko, Pierre (CERN ; Oxford U.) ; Corsini, Roberto (CERN) ; Farabolini, Wilfrid (CERN)
Corrugated structures have recently been utilized for the time-resolved diagnostics of electron bunches and free-electron-laser (FEL) pulses across several FEL facilities: SwissFEL at PSI and European XFEL at DESY. This approach is simple and cost-effective, based on the self-streaking of electrons with a transverse wakefield enhanced in such structures. In this work, we optimize the design of a corrugated streaker for the wide range of beam parameters of the CERN Linear Electron Accelerator for Research (CLEAR) at CERN. Experimental confirmation of the impedance reduction campaign in the CERN SPS
/ Argyropoulos, Theodoros (CERN) ; Damerau, Heiko (CERN) ; Karpov, Ivan (CERN) ; Lasheen, Alexandre (CERN) ; Papotti, Giulia (CERN)
Measurements of the very long single bunch spectrum with RF off, were started in the SPS in 2012 to identify the main impedance sources responsible for both single and multi-bunch beam instabilities observed during operation. The impedance of the vacuum flanges with a strong peak at 1.4 GHz was identified and proven from simulations to limit the beam intensities required for the High-Luminosity LHC (HL-LHC). [...]
