Quantifying the performance of decoding algorithms using Graphic Processing Units for the RICH subdetector at LHCb
/ Ruzicka, Josef (Unlisted, CR) ; Asch, Christian (Unlisted, CR) ; Arguedas-Cuendis, Sergio (Unlisted, CR) ; Mariani, Saverio (CERN) ; Jones, Christopher Robert (Cambridge U.) ; Meneses, Esteban (Unlisted, CR)
The Large Hadron Collider (LHC) located at the European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN) is the largest accelerator in the world, where proton-proton collisions take place at the as-of-today highest energy ever reached. The Large Hadron Collider beauty (LHCb) experiment is located at one of the LHC interaction points, and its detector and readout electronics are currently able to cope with the 40 MHz bunch crossing rate, corresponding to 4 TB/s. Beam test and performance assessment for the prototype of a novel compact RICH detector with timing capabilities for the future ALICE 3 PID system at HL-LHC
/ Pillera, R (INFN, Bari) ; Congedo, L (INFN, Bari) ; De Robertis, G (INFN, Bari) ; Di Mauro, A (CERN) ; Giliberti, M (INFN, Bari ; Polytechnic University of Bari) ; Licciulli, F (INFN, Bari) ; Liguori, A (INFN, Bari ; Polytechnic University of Bari) ; Lorusso, L (INFN, Bari ; Polytechnic University of Bari) ; Martinengo, P (CERN) ; Mazziotta, M N (INFN, Bari) et al.
The ongoing project of ALICE 3 for LHC Run 5 and beyond envisages a Ring-Imaging Cherenkov (RICH) detector for high-energy charged particle identification. This detector employs an aerogel radiator in proximity-focusing configuration and Silicon Photomultiplier (SiPM) arrays, with a high-refractive index window for improving the timing capabilities. The ALICE Collaboration is proposing a completely new apparatus, ALICE 3, for the LHC Run 5 and beyond. A key subsystem for charged particle identification will be a Ring-Imaging Cherenkov (RICH) detector consisting of an aerogel radiator and a photosensitive surface based on Silicon Photomultiplier (SiPM) arrays in a proximity-focusing configuration. Characterization of the FBK-LGAD devices manufactured at an external foundry for large-volume productions
/ CMS Collaboration
In recent years, the HEP detector community has shown an increasing interest in Low Gain Avalanche Diodes (LGADs) due to their excellent temporal resolution, good radiation resistance, and low material budget. An example of this is the upcoming CMS Endcap Timing Layer (ETL), a subdetector which will feature four disks (14 m$^{2}$) covered with these devices. In this context, Fondazione Bruno Kessler (FBK), one of the qualified producers of the ETL LGAD sensors, has recently initiated a technology transfer of the FBK-LGAD technology to an external CMOS foundry (LFoundry) in order to enable a larger and cost-effective production. The first prototype run from LFoundry was produced in May 2024.
