A Dual-Edge Pulsewidth Modulator for Fast Dynamic Response DC–DC Converters
/ Ripamonti, Giacomo (CERN) ; Saggini, Stefano (Udine U.) ; Corradini, Luca (Padua U.) ; Rizzolatti, Roberto (Udine U.) ; Faccio, Federico (CERN) ; Michelis, Stefano (CERN) ; Koukab, Adil (Ecole Polytechnique, Lausanne) ; Kayal, Maher (Ecole Polytechnique, Lausanne)
Voltage regulator modules are dc–dc converters that
power modern microprocessors. They must exhibit a fast dynamic
response, in order to achieve satisfactory regulation performance
in spite of the rapid load current variations. [...]

Development of a solid-state Marx Generator for Thyratron modulator replacement
/ Redondo, L M (Lisbon, ISEL) ; Kandratsyeu, A (Unlisted, PT) ; Barnes, M J (CERN)
The design of a solid-state Marx Generator prototype, based on SiC MOSFETs, for replacing existing Thyratron modulator technology, in particle accelerators, is described. As for Thyratrons, long-term availability is a concern. [...]

Comparative Analysis of Interleaved Methods for Parallel Full-Bridge Structures Used in Particle Accelerator Power Supplies
/ Garcia Retegui, R (Buenos Aires, CONICET ; Mar del Plata U.) ; Maestri, S (Mar del Plata U. ; Buenos Aires, CONICET) ; Wassinger, N (Mar del Plata U. ; Buenos Aires, CONICET) ; Uicich, G (Buenos Aires, CONICET ; Mar del Plata U.) ; Pittet, S (CERN) ; Burnet, JP (CERN)
Certain magnet power supplies for particle accelerators demand a high consumption of pulsed power, which generates perturbations in the electrical grids located in urban zones. Power supply systems with integrated local energy storage elements are under consideration as alternatives to mitigate these disturbances. [...]

Inductive adders for replacing thyratron based modulators at CERN
/ Barnes, M J (CERN) ; Ducimetiere, L (CERN) ; Holma, J (CERN) ; Kramer, T (CERN) ; Fowler, A (CERN)
Line-type modulators, for example pulse forming lines and pulse forming networks, which use thyratron switches, are currently used in many pulse power systems at CERN. Solid-state modulators implemented with inductive adder technology could replace thyratron based designs in many applications and potentially improve dynamic range, maintainability and reliability of the systems. Grid Interface Design for the Compact Linear Collider (CLIC)
/ Jankovic, Maria (Nottingham U.) ; Watson, Alan (Nottingham U.) ; Clare, Jon (Nottingham U.) ; Wheeler, Pat (Nottingham U.) ; Aguglia, Davide (CERN)
This paper discusses the grid interface challenges for CERN’s proposed Compact Linear Colliders’ (CLIC) klystron modulators, including a 280 MW power system optimisation. The modular multilevel converter is evaluated as a candidate topology for a Medium Voltage grid interface along with a control method for reducing the impact of klystron modulators on the electrical network..

FEA identification of high order generalized equivalent circuits for MF high voltage transformers
/ Candolfi, Sylvain (Laval U.) ; Viarouge, Philippe (Laval U.) ; Cros, Jérôme (Laval U.) ; Aguglia, Davide (CERN)
This paper presents a specific methodology to derive high order generalized equivalent circuits from electromagnetic finite element analysis for high voltage medium frequency and pulse transformers by splitting the main windings in an arbitrary number of elementary windings. With this modeling approach, the dynamic model of the transformer over a large bandwidth is improved and the order of the generalized equivalent circuit can be adapted to a specified bandwidth. [...]

Efficient Hybrid Optimal Design Method for Power Electronics Converters
/ Cabaleiro Magallanes, Francisco (CERN) ; Aguglia, Davide (CERN) ; Viarouge, Philippe (Laval U.) ; Cros, Jérôme (Laval U.)
This paper presents a novel design methodology for dimensioning optimal power-electronic converters, which is able to achieve the precision of numerical simulation-based optimization procedures, however minimizing the overall computation time. The approach is based on the utilization of analytical and frequency-domain design models for a numerical optimization process, a validation with numerical simulations of the intermediate optimal solutions, and the correction of the analytical design models precision from the numerical simulation results. Novel Active Bouncer Topology for Klystron Modulators based on Pulsed Transformers
/ Cabaleiro Magallanes, Francisco (CERN) ; Aguglia, Davide (CERN) ; Viarouge, Philippe (Laval U.) ; Cros, Jérôme (Laval U.)
Active droop compensation systems, so called active bouncers, for klystron modulators based on monolithic pulse transformers perform the regulation of the output pulse voltage while simultaneously withstand all the primary current of the modulator. This imposes the utilization of high power semiconductors which can produce high switching losses and degrade the overall system efficiency. [...]
