The study of high-frequency pick-ups for electron beam position measurements in the AWAKE common beamline
/ Pakuza, Collette (CERN) ; Spear, Bethany (JAI, UK) ; Poimenidou, Eirini (CERN) ; Senes, Eugenio (CERN) ; Wendt, Manfred (CERN) ; Krupa, Michal (CERN) ; van Gils, Nikita (CERN ; Groningen U.) ; Burrows, Philip (JAI, UK) ; Liu, Shengli (Fermilab) ; Mazzoni, Stefano (CERN) et al.
The common beamline of the AWAKE experiment at CERN involves the co-propagation of two particle beams: protons with 48 nC bunch charge and 250 ps bunch length, and electrons with up to 600 pC bunch charge and approximately 4 ps bunch length. The existing operational beam position monitors at AWAKE cannot measure the electron bunches whilst the more-intense proton bunches are present, due to their low operating frequency. [...]

Medical activities in CLEAR: studies towards radiotherapy using Very High Energy Electrons (VHEE) in the FLASH regime
/ Corsini, Roberto (CERN) ; Malyzhenkov, Alexander (CERN) ; Gilardi, Antonio (Naples U. ; INFN, Naples) ; Aksoy, Avni (CERN) ; Robertson, Cameron (Oxford U.) ; Bateman, Joseph (Oxford U.) ; Dosanjh, Manjit (CERN) ; Korysko, Pierre (Oxford U.) ; Rieker, Vilde (CERN) ; Farabolini, Wilfrid (CERN)
Given the present availability of high-gradient accelerator technology for compact and cost-effective electron linacs in the 100-200 MeV energy range, the interest for Very High Energy Electron (VHEE) radiotherapy (RT) for cancer treatment recently reached an all-time high. Particular significance is assumed by the Ultra-High Dose Rate (UHDR) regime where the so-called FLASH biological effect takes place, in which cancer cells are damaged while healthy tissue is largely spared. Validation of high efficiency klystron technology

The delivery of high RF power---from hundreds of kW to MW---by klystrons, is linked with a high overall energy consumption. A research programme led by CERN in collaboration with the industry is being conducted to understand what limits klystron efficiency and how to develop high-efficiency klystrons. [...]

We present the progress related to CERN’s capacity of delivering highly penetrating, high-linear energy transfer (LET) heavy ions for radiation effect testing of electronic components within the CHARM High-energy Ions for Micro Electronics Reliability Assurance (CHIMERA) project. Profiting from the existing accelerator infrastructure, Monte Carlo simulations, and a 300- $\mu $ m-thick silicon diode, we highlight the beam characterization capabilities and a summary of the beam properties. In preparation of the operation of the CMS electromagnetic calorimeter (ECAL) barrel at the High Luminosity Large Hadron Collider (HL-LHC) the entire on-detector electronics will be replaced. The new readout electronics comprises 12240 very front end (VFE), 2448 front end (FE) and low voltage regulator (LVR) cards arranged into readout towers (RTs) of five VFEs, one FE and one LVR card. We report the observation of neutrino interactions without final state muons at the LHC, with a significance of 6.4\,$\sigma$. A data set of proton-proton collisions at $\sqrt{s}= 13.6$\,TeV collected by \SND in 2022 and 2023 is used, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 68.6\,fb$^{-1}$. [...]
