The quantum-mechanical nuclear-shell structure determines the stability and limits of the existence of the heaviest nuclides with large proton numbers Z ≳ 100 (refs. $^{1–3}$). [...]

Nuclear moments and isotope shifts of the actinide isotopes Cf249–253 probed by laser spectroscopy / Weber, Felix (Mainz U., Inst. Phys.) ; Albrecht-Schönzart, Thomas E (Florida State U.) ; Allehabi, Saleh O (New South Wales U.) ; Berndt, Sebastian (Mainz U., Inst. Phys. ; Mainz U.) ; Block, Michael (Darmstadt, GSI ; Mainz U. ; Helmholtz Inst., Mainz) ; Dorrer, Holger (Mainz U.) ; Düllmann, Christoph E (Darmstadt, GSI ; Mainz U. ; Helmholtz Inst., Mainz) ; Dzuba, Vladimir A (New South Wales U.) ; Ezold, Julie G (Oak Ridge) ; Flambaum, Victor V (New South Wales U.) et al.
We report on high-resolution laser spectroscopy studies on Cf249–253 with spectral linewidths in the order of 100 MHz carried out at the RISIKO mass separator at Mainz University. In total three atomic ground-state transitions were investigated and the hyperfine parameters for the odd-A isotopes and isotope shift for all examined isotopes have been determined from the measured spectra. The Electron Capture in $^{163}$Ho Experiment - a Short Update / Kovac, Neven (Kirchhoff Inst. Phys.) ; Ahrens, Felix (Kirchhoff Inst. Phys.) ; Barth, Arnulf (Kirchhoff Inst. Phys.) ; Berndt, Sebastian (Mainz U. ; Mainz U., Inst. Phys.) ; Blaum, Klaus (Heidelberg, Max Planck Inst.) ; Brass, Martin (U. Heidelberg, ITP) ; Bruer, Erik (Kirchhoff Inst. Phys.) ; Door, Menno (Heidelberg, Max Planck Inst.) ; Dorrer, Holger (Mainz U.) ; Düllmann, Christoph (Mainz U.) et al.
The definition of the absolute neutrino mass scale is one of the main goals of the Particle Physics today. The study of the end-point regions of the $\beta$- and electron capture (EC) spectrum offers a possibility to determine the effective electron (anti-)neutrino mass in a completely model independent way, as it only relies on the energy and momentum conservation.
