Analysis of the Panofsky-Wenzel Theorem in pillbox cavities with a beam pipe / Wroe, Laurence (CERN) ; Latina, Andrea (CERN) ; Southerby, Matthew (Lancaster U. ; Cockcroft Inst. Accel. Sci. Tech.) ; Apsimon, Robert (Cockcroft Inst. Accel. Sci. Tech. ; Lancaster U.) ; Stapnes, Steinar (CERN) ; Wuensch, Walter (CERN)
In this paper, we derive the multipolar form of the change in transverse and longitudinal momenta of an ultra-relativistic charged particle that traverses a harmonic TM$_{mn0}$ mode in a pillbox cavity with a beam pipe. The relevant equations are first formalised before presenting results from the numerical integration of RF cavity field maps. [...]

Minimising Transverse Multipoles in Accelerating RF Cavities via Azimuthally Modulated Designs / Wroe, Laurence (JAI, UK) ; Apsimon, Robert (Lancaster U. (main)) ; Dosanjh, Manjit (CERN) ; Sheehy, Suzanne (Melbourne U.)
In this paper, we build upon previous work of designing RF structures that support modes with tailored multipolar fields by applying the concept to negate the transverse multipoles in accelerating RF cavities caused by the incorporation of waveguide slots and tuning deformations. We outline a systematic method for designing structures that minimise these transverse multipoles and present analysis of simulations of two different minimisation designs..

Electron Beam Based Leather Tanning / Apsimon, Robert (Lancaster U. (main) ; Cockcroft Inst. Accel. Sci. Tech.) ; Dewhurst, Kay (Lancaster U. (main) ; Cockcroft Inst. Accel. Sci. Tanning of leather for clothing, shoes, and handbags uses potentially harmful chemicals that often run off into local water supplies or require a large carbon footprint to safely recover these pollutants. In regions of the world with significant leather production, this can lead to a significant environmental impact. [...]

CompactLight (XLS) is an International Collaboration of 24 partners and 5 third parties, funded by the European Union through the Horizon 2020 Research and Innovation Programme. The main goal of the project, which started in January 2018 with a duration of 36 months, is the design of an hard X-ray FEL facility beyond today’s state of the art, using the latest concepts for bright electron photo-injectors, high-gradient accelerating structures, and innovative short-period undulators. The AWAKE Run 2 programme and beyond / AWAKE Collaboration
Plasma wakefield acceleration is a promising technology to reduce the size of particle accelerators. Use of high energy protons to drive wakefields in plasma has been demonstrated during Run 1 of the AWAKE programme at CERN. [...]

Creating Exact Multipolar Fields in Accelerating RF Cavities via an Azimuthally Modulated Design / Wroe, Laurence M (JAI, UK) ; Apsimon, Robert J (Cockcroft Inst. Accel. Sci. Tech.) ; Dosanjh, Manjit (JAI, UK ; CERN) ; Sheehy, Suzanne L (JAI, UK ; Melbourne U.)
In this paper, we present a novel method for designing RF structures with specifically tailored multipolar field contributions. This has a range of applications, including the suppression of unwanted multipolar fields or the introduction of wanted terms, such as for quadrupole focusing. [...]

The H2020 CompactLight Project aims at designing the next generation of compact X-rays Free-Electron Lasers, relying on very high gradient accelerating structures (X-band, 12 GHz), the most advanced concepts for high brightness electron photo injectors, and innovative compact short-period undulators. Compared to existing facilities, the proposed facility will benefit from a lower electron beam energy, due to the enhanced undulators performance, and will be significantly more compact, with a smaller footprint, as a consequence of the lower energy and the high-gradient X-band structures. Collaborative strategies for meeting the global need for cancer radiation therapy treatment systems / Dosanjh, Manjit (CERN) ; Aggarwal, Ajay (King's Coll. London) ; Angal-Kalinin, Deepa (Daresbury) ; Apsimon, Robert (Lancaster U. (main)) ; Boogert, Stewart (Royal Holloway, U. of London) ; Burt, Graeme (Lancaster U. The idea of designing affordable equipment and developing sustainable infrastructures for delivering radiation treatment for patients with cancer in countries that lack resources and expertise stimulated a first International Cancer Expert Corps (ICEC) championed, CERN-hosted workshop in Geneva in November 2016. Which has since been followed by three additional workshops involving the sponsorship and support from UK Science and Technology Facilities Council (STFC). [...]
