The suppression of isobaric contaminations is of growing importance for many scientific programs using radioactive isotopes produced at isotope separation on-line (ISOL) facilities, such as ISOLDE-CERN. A solid tungsten proton-to-neutron converter has been used for ten years to produce neutron-rich fission fragments from an UC x target while suppressing the production of neutron-deficient isobaric contaminants. Porous silicon carbide and aluminum oxide with unidirectional open porosity as model target materials for radioisotope beam production
/ Czapski, M. (CERN) ; Stora, T. (CERN) ; Tardivat, C. ; Deville, S. ; Santos Augusto, R. (CERN) ; Leloup, J. ; Bouville, F. ; Fernandes Luis, R.
New silicon carbide (SiC) and aluminum oxide (Al2O3) of a tailor-made microstructure were produced using the ice-templating technique, which permits controlled pore formation conditions within the material. These prototypes will serve to verify aging of the new advanced target materials under irradiation with proton beams. [...]

A spallation-based irradiation test facility for fusion and future fission materials
/ Samec, K (CERN) ; Fusco, Y (CERN) ; Kadi, Y (CERN) ; Luis, R (CERN) ; Romanets, Y (CERN) ; Behzad, M (Sungkyunkwan U., Seoul) ; Aleksan, R (Paris, CEA) ; Bousson, S (CNRS, France ; Paris, IN2P3)
The EU’s FP7 TIARA program for developing accelerator-based facilities has recently demonstrated the unique capabilities of a compact and powerful spallation source for irradiating advanced nuclear materials. The spectrum and intensity of the neutron flux produced in the proposed facility fulfils the requirements of the DEMO fusion reactor for ITER, ADS reactors and also Gen III / IV reactors. [...]

A possible scheme to deliver 2 Gev Beams from the CERN PS Booster to the ISOLDE Facility
/ Hanke, K (CERN) ; Bartmann, W (CERN) ; Cole, J (CERN) ; Newborough, A (CERN) ; Pittet, S (CERN) ; Stora, T (CERN) ; Voulot, D (CERN) ; Fernandes Luis, R (ITN, Lisbon, Portugal)
The CERN PS Booster (PSB) is presently undergoing an upgrade program to increase its beam energy from 1.4 GeV to 2 GeV. While this energy upgrade is targeted at LHC-type beams, the option of delivering 2 GeV beams to the ISOLDE facility has also been investigated. [...]

Optimization studies of the CERN-ISOLDE neutron converter and fission target system
/ Luis, R (ITN, Sacavem) ; Marques, J G (ITN, Sacavem) ; Stora, T (CERN) ; Vaz, P (ITN, Sacavem) ; Zanini, L (PSI, Villigen)
The ISOLDE facility at CERN has been one of the leading isotope separator on-line (ISOL) facilities worldwide since it became operative in 1967. More than 1000 isotopes are available at ISOLDE, produced after the bombardment of various primary targets with a pulsed proton beam of energy 1.4 GeV and an average intensity of 2 muA. [...]

EURISOL Multimegawatt Target Unit - MAFF Configuration: Dosimetry and Activation Studies
/ Luis, R (ITN, Sacavem) ; Bermudez, J (INFN, Legnaro) ; Kadi, Y (CERN) ; Tecchio, L (INFN, Legnaro) ; Kharoua, C (CERN) ; Vaz, P (ITN, Sacavem) ; Ene, D (IRFU, SPhN, Saclay) ; David, J C (IRFU, SPhN, Saclay) ; Goncalves, I F (ITN, Sacavem) ; Rocca, R (CERN) et al.
The EURopean Isotope Separation On-Line Radioactive Ion Beam (EURISOL) project aims at building a facility to produce radioactive ion beams with intensities two to three orders of magnitude higher than those presently available. A 4-MW (1-GeV, 4-mA) proton beam hits a liquid mercury converter, generating, by spallation reactions, high neutron fluxes that induce fission in surrounding fissile targets. [...]

EURISOL-DS multi-MW target unit: Neutronics performance and shielding assessment, dose rate and material activation calculations for the MAFF configuration
/ Romanets, Y (ITN, Sacavem) ; Bermudez, J (INFN, Legnaro) ; Kadi, Y (CERN) ; Luis, R (ITN, Sacavem) ; Goncalves, I F (ITN, Sacavem) ; Tecchio, L (INFN, Legnaro) ; Kharoua, C (CERN) ; Vaz, P (ITN, Sacavem) ; Ene, D (IRFU, SPhN, Saclay) ; David, J C (IRFU, SPhN, Saclay) et al.
One of the objectives of the EURISOL (EURopean Isotope Separation On-Line Radioactive Ion Beam) Design Study consisted of providing a safe and reliable facility layout and design for the following operational parameters and characteristics: (a) a 4 MW proton beam of 1 GeV energy impinging on a mercury target (the converter); (b) high neutron fluxes (similar to 3 x 10(16) neutrons/s) generated by spallation reactions of the protons impinging in the converter and (c) fission rate on fissile U-235 targets in excess of 10(15) fissions/s. In this work, the state-of-the-art Monte Carlo codes MCNPX (Pelowitz, 2005) and FLUKA (Vlachoudis, 2009; Ferrari et al., 2008) were used to characterize the neutronics performance and to perform the shielding assessment (Herrera-Martinez and Kadi, 2006; Cornell, 2003) of the EURISOLTarget Unit and to provide estimations of dose rate and activation of different components, in view of the radiation safety assessment of the facility.
