The LHC Injectors Upgrade (LIU) project was put in place between 2010 and 2021 to increase the intensity and brightness in the LHC injectors to match the challenging requirements of the High-Luminosity LHC (HL-LHC) project, while ensuring reliable operation of the injectors complex up to the end of the HL-LHC era (ca. 2040). Performance of the Low Energy Ion Ring at CERN with lead ions in 2022
/ Alemany-Fernandez, Reyes (CERN) ; Frassier, Alexandre (CERN) ; Rey, Anthony (CERN) ; Wetton, Chris (CERN) ; Mutin, Christophe (CERN) ; Gamba, Davide (CERN) ; Bodart, Dominique (CERN) ; Carlier, Felix (CERN) ; Velotti, Francesco (CERN) ; Le Godec, Gilles (CERN) et al.
2022 has been a performance consolidation year for the Low Energy Ion Ring (LEIR) at CERN that demonstrated its capability of delivering the target beam parameters required for high luminosity production in the LHC in a reproducible and reliable way. The main steps that have led to the high performance reach of this beam, together with the machine stability improvements deployed, are detailed in this paper..

The LHC Injector Upgrade (LIU) programme forms a cornerstone of the High-Luminosity LHC project. Among its targets, a new Beam Position Monitor (BPM) system has been deployed in the Low Energy Ion Ring (LEIR) to facilitate optics measurements. [...]

Advancements in injection efficiency modelling for the Low Energy Ion Ring (LEIR) at CERN

The performance of the Low Energy Ion Ring (LEIR) at CERN is mainly determined by the number of charges extracted from the machine and transferred to the downstream chain of accelerators. While the required target of 9e10 charges has now been surpassed, a series of studies have been undertaken to further push the intensity reach of LEIR. [...]

Simulations and measurements of the transverse mode coupling instability in the LHC

The High Luminosity (HL) upgrade of the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) will increase the peak luminosity at the experiments by more than a factor of 5 with respect to the LHC design value. To achieve this goal, among the upgrade of several beam and machine parameters, the beam intensity will nearly double with respect to the operational LHC value, and the transverse beam emittance will decrease by 50% compared to the LHC design value. Overview of material choices for HL-LHC collimators

In view of the High-Luminosity (HL-LHC) upgrade of the LHC collimation system, different materials were investigated to determine how the jaws of the new collimators could be manufactured to meet the demanding requirements of HL-LHC, such as thermomechanical robustness and stability, RF impedance, UHV, etc. During the Long-Shutdown 2 (LS2), five primary and 10 secondary low-impedance collimators were already produced using novel material. Transverse impedance studies of 2D azimuthally symmetric devices of finite length
/ Biancacci, N (CERN) ; Passarelli, A (INFN, Naples) ; Vaccaro, V G (INFN, Naples) ; Metral, E (CERN) ; Salvant, B (CERN) ; Migliorati, M (INFN, Rome ; Rome U.) ; Palumbo, L (INFN, Rome ; Rome U.)
The accurate calculation of the beam coupling impedance for particle accelerators is necessary to carefully assess the machine stability against impedance-driven collective effects. A first order evaluation of the beam coupling impedance is often done by means of analytical formulas and/or 2D numerical codes. [...]

Automated Intensity Optimisation Using Reinforcement Learning at LEIR
/ Madysa, Nico (CERN) ; Alemany-Fernández, Reyes (CERN) ; Biancacci, Nicolo (CERN) ; Goddard, Brennan (CERN) ; Kain, Verena (CERN) ; Velotti, Francesco (CERN)
High intensities in the CERN Low Energy Ion Ring (LEIR) are achieved by stacking up to seven consecutive multi-turn injections from Linac3. Two inclined septa combined with a collapsing horizontal orbit bump allow a 6-D phase space painting via a linearly ramped mean momentum along the Linac3 pulse and injection at high dispersion. [...]
