Injection of a LWFA Electron Bunch in a PWFA Driven by a Self-modulated-proton-bunch
/ Muggli, Patric (Munich, Max Planck Inst.) ; Amorim, Ligia (Lisbon, IST) ; Karsch, Stefan (Garching, Max Planck Inst.) ; Lopes, Nelson (Lisbon, IST) ; Vieira, Jorge (Lisbon, IST)
The AWAKE experiment recently approved at CERN will study the acceleration of an externally injected electron bunch in a plasma wakefield accelerator (PWFA) driven by a self-modulated proton bunch. We study the possibility of injecting a bunch created by a laser-driven plasma wakefield accelerator (LWFA). [...]

The Horizon 2020 Project EuPRAXIA (European Plasma Research Accelerator with eXcellence In Applications) is producing a conceptual design report for a highly compact and cost-effective European facility with multi-GeV electron beams accelerated using plasmas. EuPRAXIA will be set up as a distributed Open Innovation platform with two construction sites, one with a focus on beam-driven plasma acceleration (PWFA) and another site with a focus on laser-driven plasma acceleration (LWFA). Simulation Study of an LWFA-based Electron Injector for AWAKE Run 2
/ Williamson, Barney (Manchester U. ; Cockcroft Inst. Accel. Sci. Tech.) ; Xia, Guoxing (Manchester U. ; Cockcroft Inst. Accel. Sci. Tech.) ; Döbert, Steffen (CERN) ; Karsch, Stefan (Munich, Max Planck Inst. Quantenopt.) ; Muggli, Patric (CERN ; Munich, Max Planck Inst.)
The AWAKE experiment aims to demonstrate preservation of injected electron beam quality during acceleration in proton-driven plasma waves. The short bunch duration required to correctly load the wakefield is challenging to meet with the current electron injector system, given the space available to the beamline. [...]

The Horizon 2020 Project EuPRAXIA ('European Plasma Research Accelerator with eXcellence In Applications') aims at producing a design report of a highly compact and cost-effective European facility with multi-GeV electron beams using plasma as the acceleration medium. The accelerator facility will be based on a laser and/or a beam driven plasma acceleration approach and will be used for photon science, high-energy physics (HEP) detector tests, and other applications such as compact X-ray sources for medical imaging or material processing. Acceleration of Charged Particles by High Intensity Few-Cycle Laser Pulses
/ Schramm, Ulrich ; Becker, S ; Geissler, Michael ; Grüner, Florian ; Habs, Dietrich ; Karsch, Stefan ; Krausz, Ferenc ; Meyer-ter-Vehn, J ; Schmid, K ; Schreiber, J et al.
Only recently a breakthrough in laser plasma acceleration has been achieved with the observation of intense (nC) mono-energetic (10% relative width) electron beams in the 100MeV energy range.* Above the wave-breaking threshold the electrons are trapped and accelerated in a single wake of the laser pulse, called bubble, according to PIC simulations.** However, pulse energis varied from shot-to-shot in the experiments. At the MPQ Garching we prepare the stable acceleration of electrons by this bubble regime by the use of 10TW few-cycle laser pulse. [...]
