Comparative Analysis of Radiotherapy Linear Accelerator Downtime and Failure Modes in the UK, Nigeria and Botswana / Wroe, Laurence M. (Oxford U.) ; Ige, Taofeeq A. ; Asogwa, Obinna C. ; Aruah, Simeon C. (Unlisted, NG) ; Grover, Surbhi (Botswana U.) ; Makufa, Remigio (Botswana U.) ; Fitz-Gibbon, Matthew (U. The lack of radiotherapy linear accelerators (LINACs) in Low- and Middle- Income Countries (LMICs) has been recognised as a major barrier to providing quality cancer care in these regions, along with a shortfall in the number of highly qualified personnel. It is expected that additional challenges will be faced in operating precise, high tech radiotherapy equipment in these environments, and anecdotal evidence suggests that LINACs have greater downtime and higher failure rates of components than their counterparts in High-Income Countries. Improving access to radiotherapy in LMICs through a collaborative initiative to reduce technology downtime / Ige, Taofeeq A (Natl. Hospital Abuja, Nigeria ; Lancaster U.) ; Jenkins, Alexander (Lancaster U. ; Oxford U.) ; Dosanjh, Manjit (Lancaster U. ; Oxford U. ; Internatl. Cancer Expert Corps, Washington) ; O’Brien, Donna (Internatl. Cancer Expert Corps, Washington) ; Pistenmaa, David (Lancaster U. ; Internatl. Cancer Expert Corps, Washington) ; Coleman, C Norman (Internatl. Cancer Expert Corps, Washington)
This chapter covers approaches that aim to increase access to radiotherapy care in Africa by reducing machine downtime. It includes a survey design covering this issue across Africa..

An opportunity to have a substantial impact on multiple challenging societal problems exists in simultaneously addressing the following: (a) the urgent need for sustainable health care; (b) the importance of mentorship in enabling the emergence of new generations of leaders; (c) the essential need for cross-cultural competency1 to address global crises through problem solving across societal boundaries; and (d) options for continued productivity by the increasing number of older people. Sustainable health care needs to build on cancer care, which requires urgent intervention and encompasses noncommunicable and infectious diseases in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) and geographically isolated populations in high-income countries (HICs). Surveying the Challenges to Improve Linear Accelerator-based Radiation Therapy in Africa: a Unique Collaborative Platform of All 28 African Countries Offering Such Treatment / Ige, T A (NMC, Abuja) ; Jenkins, A (Oxford U.) ; Burt, G (Lancaster U.) ; Angal-Kalinin, D (Daresbury) ; McIntosh, P (Daresbury) ; Coleman, C N (Unlisted, US) ; Pistenmaa, D A (Unlisted, US) ; O'Brien, D (Unlisted, US) ; Dosanjh, M (Oxford U. ; Unlisted, US ; CERN)
Radiation therapy is a critical component for curative and palliative treatment of cancer and is used in more than half of all patients with cancer. Yet there is a global shortage of access to this treatment, especially in Sub-Saharan Africa, where there is a shortage of technical staff as well as equipment. [...]
