Open is not enough / Chen, Xiaoli (CERN ; Sheffield U.) ; Dallmeier-Tiessen, Sünje (CERN) ; Dasler, Robin (CERN) ; Feger, Sebastian (CERN ; Stuttgart U.) ; Fokianos, Pamfilos (CERN) ; Gonzalez, Jose Benito (CERN) ; Hirvonsalo, Harri (CERN ; Helsinki Inst. of Phys.) ; Kousidis, Dinos (CERN) ; Lavasa, Artemis (CERN) ; Mele, Salvatore (CERN) et al.
The solutions adopted by the high-energy physics community to foster reproducible research are examples of best practices that could be embraced more widely. This first experience suggests that reproducibility requires going beyond openness..

Experimental constraints on extra dimensions / Mele, S (CERN)
In the last few years the proposed existence of large extra dimensions has changed the landscape of high energy physics, suggesting longly sought answers to fundamental questions like the hierarchy problem. To date, several theoretical models have been proposed and a vigorous experimental effort has started, aimed to hunt for manifestations of extra dimensions in form of deviations from the Newton law in short-range tests of gravity or as new particle interactions at the world’s most powerful colliders. [...]

Converting the Literature of a Scientific Field to Open Access through Global Collaboration: The Experience of SCOAP3 in Particle Physics / Kohls, Alexander (CERN) ; Mele, Salvatore (CERN)
Gigantic particle accelerators, incredibly complex detectors, an antimatter factory and the discovery of the Higgs boson—this is part of what makes CERN famous. Only a few know that CERN also hosts the world largest Open Access initiative: SCOAP3. [...]

Enabling Sharing and Reuse of Scientific Data / Dallmeier-Tiessen, Suenje (CERN) ; Darby, Robert (Rutherford) ; Gitmans, Kathrin (Alfred Wegener Inst., Ny-Alesund) ; Lambert, Simon (Rutherford) ; Matthews, Brian (Rutherford) ; Mele, Salvatore (CERN) ; Suhonen, Jari (CSC) ; Wilson, Michael (Rutherford)
The purpose of this study was to develop an understanding of the current state of scientific data sharing that stakeholders could use to develop and implement effective data sharing strategies and policies. The study developed a conceptual model to describe the process of data sharing, and the drivers, barriers, and enablers that determine stakeholder engagement. [...]

The SOAP (Study of Open Access Publishing) project has analyzed the current supply and demand situation in the open access journal landscape. Starting from the Directory of Open Access Journals, several sources of data were considered, including journal websites and direct inquiries within the publishing industry to comprehensively map the present supply of online peer-reviewed OA journals. The Measurement of the Number of Light Neutrino Species at LEP / Mele, Salvatore (CERN)
Within weeks of the start of the data taking at the LEP accelerator, the ALEPH, DELPHI, L3 and OPAL experiments were able to confirm the existence of just three light neutrino species. This measurement relies on the Standard Model relation between the ‘invisible’ width of the Z-boson and the cross-sections for Z-boson production and subsequent decay into hadrons. [...]
