This paper aims to provide a basis for teachers interested in bringing modern particle detectors into their classrooms. In particular, it gives an overview of the basic principles of modern particle detectors, linking them to concepts that are already a part of the curriculum. [...]

Higgs in a box: investigating the nature of a scientific discovery
/ Woithe, Julia (CERN) ; Boselli, Margherita (CERN) ; Chatzidaki, Panagiota (CERN ; Lund U.) ; Dahlkemper, Merten Nikolay (CERN ; Gottingen U., II. Phys. The discovery of the Higgs boson by the ATLAS and CMS collaborations in 2012 concluded the longest search for a particle in the history of particle physics and was based on the largest and most complex physics experiments ever conducted, involving thousands of scientists and engineers from around the world. It provided crucial evidence for a theory developed in the 1960s that describes the existence of the invisible Brout-Englert-Higgs field and the effects of this field on the mass of elementary particles. The EXTRA-BL4S experiment for the measurement of the energy and angular distributions of transition radiation X-rays
/ e EXTRA-BL4S Collaboration
We have designed and implemented an experiment to measure the angular distributions and the energy spectra of the transition radiation X-rays emitted by fast electrons and positrons crossing different radiators. Our experiment was selected among the proposals of the 2021 Beamline for Schools contest, a competition for high-school students organized every year by CERN and DESY, and was performed at the DESY II Test Beam facility area TB21, using a high-purity beam of electrons or positrons with momenta in the range from 1 to 6 GeV/c. A Teacher’s Perspective on the CERN Beamline for Schools Competition
/ Boselli, Margherita (CERN) ; Bulson, Alison (West High School, Salt Lake City) ; Arce-Larreta, Enrique (West High School, Salt Lake City) ; Elorza, Uriel Garcia (UNAM, Mexico) ; Felici, Maria Rita (Liceo Sci. Stat., Ferno) ; González-Trueba, Laura Helena (UNAM, Mexico) ; Jacques, Denis (Ecole second. Cath., Cambridge, Ontario) ; Joos, Markus (CERN) ; Kempa, Janusz (Marshal Malachowski Second. School, Plock) ; Knapp, Lise (Ecole second. Cath., Cambridge, Ontario) et al.
We are a group of teachers who have independently participated in the CERN Beamline for Schools (BL4S) competition with teams of high school students from our schools between 2014 and 2021. All of our teams won the competition, and therefore our students had the opportunity to perform their proposed experiments at a particle accelerator. [...]

In a previous paper the BL4S science competition has been presented from the technical point of view. This paper focuses on the organizational aspects of the period that the winning teams spent at DESY to perform their experiments. [...]
