The Characterization of Optical Fibers for Distributed Cryogenic Temperature Monitoring / Marcon, Leonardo (CERN ; U. Padua (main)) ; Chiuchiolo, Antonella (Darmstadt, GSI) ; Castaldo, Bernardo (CERN) ; Bajas, Hugues (CERN) ; Galtarossa, Andrea (U. Padua (main)) ; Bajko, Marta (CERN) ; Palmieri, Luca (U. Padua (main))
Thanks to their characteristics, optical fiber sensors are an ideal solution for sensing applications at cryogenic temperatures, such as the monitoring of superconducting devices. Their applicability at such temperatures, however, is not immediate as optical fibers exhibit a non-linear thermal response which becomes rapidly negligible below 50 K. [...]

Quench Protection Studies for the High Luminosity LHC Nb$_3$Sn Quadrupole Magnets / Ravaioli, Emmanuele (CERN) ; Ambrosio, Giorgio (Fermilab) ; Bajas, Hugues (CERN) ; Duda, Michal (PSI, Villigen ; CERN) ; Ferracin, Paolo (LBNL, Berkeley) ; Ferradas Troitino, Jose (CERN) ; Izquierdo Bermudez, Susana (CERN) ; Mangiarotti, Franco (CERN) ; Marinozzi, Vittorio (Fermilab) ; Mentink, Matthias (CERN) et al.
Achieving the targets of the High Luminosity LHC project requires the installation of new inner triplet magnet circuits for the final focusing of the particle beams on each side of the two main interaction points. Each of the four circuits will include six 150 mm aperture, 132.2 T/m gradient, Nb$_3$Sn quadrupole magnets to be installed in the LHC tunnel. [...]

An MgB- Superconducting Shield Prototype for the Future Circular Collider Septum Magnet / Barna, Daniel (Wigner RCP, Budapest ; CERN) ; Giunchi, Giovanni (Edison SpA, Milan) ; Novák, Martin (Wigner RCP, Budapest) ; Brunner, Kristof (Wigner RCP, Budapest) ; Német, Aniko (Wigner RCP, Budapest) ; Petrone, Carlo (CERN) ; Atanasov, Miroslav (CERN) ; Bajas, Hugues (CERN) ; Feuvrier, Jerome (CERN)
A passive superconducting shield was previously proposed to realize a high-field (above 3 T) septum magnet for the Future Circular Collider proton–proton ring (FCC-hh). This paper presents the experimental results of a potential shield material, MgB$_2$, at a temperature of 4.2 K. [...]

Magnetic Analysis of the MQXF Quadrupole for the High Luminosity LHC / Izquierdo Bermudez, S (CERN ; Madrid Politecnic U., ETSI Minas) ; Fiscarelli, Lucio (CERN) ; Ambrosio, Giorgio (Fermilab) ; Bajas, Hugues (CERN) ; Chlachidze, Guram (Fermilab) ; Ferracin, Paolo (CERN) ; DiMarco, Joseph (Fermilab) ; Stoynev, Stoyan Emilov (Fermilab) ; Todesco, Ezio (CERN) ; Sabbi, GianLuca (LBL, Berkeley) et al. /LARP
The high-luminosity upgrade of the large hadron collider (HL-LHC) requires new high-field and large-aperture quadrupole magnets for the low-beta inner triplets (MQXF). The US Hilumi-LHC Accelerator Upgrade (HL-LHC AUP) and CERN are jointly developing a 150 mm aperture Nb3Sn magnet. [...]

Test Results of the CERN HL-LHC low-$\beta$ Quadrupole Short Models MQXFS3c and MQXFS4 / Mangiarotti, Franco J (CERN) ; Bajas, Hugues (CERN) ; Ambrosio, Giorgio (Fermilab) ; Bajko, Marta (CERN) ; Bordini, Bernardo (CERN) ; Bourcey, Nicolas (CERN) ; Duda, Michal (Cracow, INP ; CERN) ; Desbiolles, Vincent (CERN) ; Feuvrier, Jerome (CERN) ; Fleiter, Jerome (CERN) et al. /LARP
For the High Luminosity Upgrade of the CERN Large Hadron Collider, lower $\beta$* quadrupole magnets based on advanced Nb3Sn conductors will be installed on each side of the ATLAS and CMS experiment insertion zones. As part of the technological developments needed to achieve the required field gradient of 132.6 T/m within a 150-mm aperture, short length model magnets, named MQXFS, are tested both at the CERN SM18 and FERMI Lab test facilities. The HL-LHC Low-$\beta$ Quadrupole Magnet MQXF: from Short Models to Long Prototypes / Ferracin, Paolo (CERN) ; Ambrosio, Giorgio (Fermilab) ; Anerella, Michael (Brookhaven) ; Bajas, Hugues (CERN) ; Bajko, Marta (CERN) ; Bordini, Bernardo (CERN) ; Bossert, Rodger (Fermilab) ; Bourcey, Nicolas (CERN) ; Cheng, Daniel W (LBL, Berkeley) ; Chlachidze, Guram (Fermilab) et al.
Among the components to be upgraded in LHC inter- action regions for the HiLumi-LHC projects are the inner triplet (or low-β) quadrupole magnets, denoted as Q1, Q2a, Q2b, and Q3. The new quadrupole magnets, called MQXF, are based on Nb3 Sn superconducting magnet technology and operate at a gradient of 132.6 T/m, with a conductor peak field of 11.4 T. [...]

Development of a Digital Quench Detection System for Nb$_3$Sn Magnets and First Measurements on Prototype Magnets / Steckert, Josef (CERN) ; Kopal, Josef (CERN) ; Bajas, Hugues (CERN) ; Denz, Reiner (CERN) ; Georgakakis, Spyridon (CERN) ; De Matteis, Ernesto (CERN) ; Spasic, Jelena (CERN) ; Siemko, Andrzej (CERN)
The High Luminosity upgrade for the Large Hadron Collider LHC (HL-LHC) requires new Nb$_3$Sn superconducting magnets and it triggers a development of novel hardware for the quench detection system (QDS) based on a field programmable gate array (FPGA) digital platform and a number of individually isolated analogue front-ends. Galvanic insulation has been implemented downstream the analogue to digital convertors to eliminate a usage of analogue isolation amplifiers. [...]

Quench propagation in Nb$_{3}$Sn cos-theta 11 T dipole model magnets in high stress areas / Mangiarotti, Franco J (CERN) ; Willering, Gerard P (CERN) ; Bajas, Hugues (CERN) ; Bajko, Marta ; Bordini, Bernardo (CERN) ; Bottura, Luca (CERN) ; Izquierdo Bermudez, Susana (CERN) ; Löffler, Christian H (CERN) ; Gomez, Jose V Lorenzo ; Savary, Frederic (CERN) et al.
A large number of training quenches at various currents, temperatures, and ramp rates, have been performed on six 11 T dipole model magnets. Quenches in the midplane of these magnets were of special interest, since the quench current in the last three models measured in 2016 was limited to between 84% and 92% of the magnets short sample limit.
