“Photonic Crystals (PhC)” have been used in a variety of fields as a structure for improving the light extraction efficiency from materials with high index of refraction. In previous work we already showed the light extraction improvement of several PhC covered LYSO crystals in computer simulations and practical measurements. [...]

Influence of Depth of Interaction upon the Performance of Scintillator Detectors / Brown, Mark S. (U. Coll. London) ; Gundacker, Stefan (CERN) ; Taylor, Alaric (U. Coll. The uncertainty in time of particle detection within a scintillator detector, characterised by the coincidence time resolution (CTR), is explored with respect to the interaction position within the scintillator crystal itself. Electronic collimation between two scintillator detectors is utilised to determine the CTR with depth of interaction (DOI) for different materials, geometries and wrappings. [...]

Component and system level studies of radiation damage impact on reflective electroabsorption modulators for use in HL-LHC data transmission / Papadopoulos, S (CERN ; University Coll. London) ; Darwazeh, I (University Coll. London) ; El Nasr-Storey, S.S (CERN) ; Papakonstantinou, I (University Coll. London) ; Troska, J (CERN) ; Vasey, F (CERN)
We investigate the radiation hardness of Reflective Electroabsorption Modulators (REAMs) for fluence levels up to 14 휐^15 24 GeV p/cm^2 to explore the possibility of utilising REAMs for data readout at the High-Luminosity Large Hadron Collider (HL-LHC). The high fluence levels used in the experiment and the online spectral measurements carried out provide significant insight into the radiation damage mechanism. [...]

A Fully Bidirectional Optical Network With Latency Monitoring Capability for the Distribution of Timing-Trigger and Control Signals in High-Energy Physics Experiments / Papakonstantinou, I (CERN) ; Darwazeh, I (University Coll. The present paper discusses recent advances on a Passive Optical Network inspired Timing-Trigger and Control scheme for the future upgrade of the TTC system installed in the LHC experiments' and more specifically the currently known as TTCex to TTCrx link. The timing PON is implemented with commercially available FPGAs and 1-Gigabit Ethernet PON transceivers and provides a fixed latency gigabit downlink that can carry level-1 trigger accept decisions and commands as well as an upstream link for feedback from the front-end electronics..

Modelling radiation-effects in semiconductor lasers for use in SLHC experiments / Stejskal, P (CERN ; Imperial Coll., London) ; Détraz, S (CERN) ; Papadopoulos, S (CERN) ; Papakonstantinou, I (CERN) ; Sigaud, C (CERN) ; Soos, A (CERN) ; Storey, S (CERN) ; Troska, J (CERN) ; Vasey, F (CERN)
Optical link components in the SLHC inner detectors are to be exposed to intense radiation fields during operation, and, hence, their qualification in terms of radiation tolerance is required. We have created a model that describes a semiconductor laser undergoing irradiation to enable the extrapolation to full lifetime total fluences from lower fluence radiation tests [...]

In the context of the versatile link project, a set of semiconductor lasers were studied and modelled aiming at the optimization of the laser driver circuit. High frequency measurements of the laser diode devices in terms of reflected and transmission characteristics were made and used to support the development of a model that can be applied to study their input impedance characteristics and light modulation properties.
