Relative Biological Effectiveness of Antiprotons the AD-4/ACE Experiment / Holzscheiter, Michael ; Alsner, Jan ; Bassler, Niels ; Knudsen, Helge ; Sellner, Stefan ; Sørensen, Brita Singers /AD-4/ACE
Particle beam cancer therapy was introduced by Robert R. Wilson in 1947 based on the advantageous depth dose profile of a particle beam in human-like targets (water) compared to X-rays or electrons. [...]

Experimental evidence of quantum radiation reaction in aligned crystals / Wistisen, Tobias N. (Aarhus U.) ; Di Piazza, Antonino (Heidelberg, Max Planck Inst.) ; Knudsen, Helge V. (Aarhus U.) ; Uggerhøj, Ulrik I. (Aarhus U.)
Radiation reaction is the influence of the electromagnetic field emitted by a charged particle on the dynamics of the particle itself. Here we report experimental radiation emission spectra from ultrarelativistic positrons in silicon in a regime where both quantum and radiation-reaction effects dominate the dynamics of the positrons. [...]

Bubble detector measurements of a mixed radiation field from antiproton annihilation / Bassler, Niels (Aarhus U. ; Aarhus U. Hospital) ; Knudsen, Helge (Aarhus U.) ; Møller, Søren Pape (Aarhus U., ISA) ; Petersen, Jørgen B. (Aarhus U. Hospital) ; Rahbek, Dennis (Aarhus U.) ; Uggerhøj, Ulrik I. (Aarhus U.) /AD-4/ACE collaboration
In the light of recent progress in the study of the biological potential of antiproton tumour treatment it is important to be able to characterize the neutron intensity arising from antiproton annihilation using simple, compact and reliable detectors. The intensity of fast neutrons from antiproton annihilation on polystyrene has been measured with bubble detectors and a multiplicity has been derived as well as an estimated neutron equivalent dose. [...]

Antiproton radiotherapy / ACE Collaboration
Antiprotons are interesting as a possible future modality in radiation therapy for the following reasons: When fast antiprotons penetrate matter, protons and antiprotons have near identical stopping powers and exhibit equal radiobiology well before the Bragg-peak. But when the antiprotons come to rest at the Bragg-peak, they annihilate, releasing almost 2 GeV per antiproton–proton annihilation. [...]

The antiproton depth–dose curve in water / Bassler, N (Aarhus U. Hospital ; Deutsches Krebsforsch., Heidelberg) ; Holzscheiter, M H (UNM, Albuquerque) ; Jäkel, O (Deutsches Krebsforsch., Heidelberg) ; Knudsen, H V (Aarhus U.) ; Kovacevic, S (Montenegro U.) /AD-4/ACE Collaboration
We have measured the depth–dose curve of 126 MeV antiprotons in a water phantom using ionization chambers. Since the antiproton beam provided by CERN has a pulsed structure and possibly carries a high-LET component from the antiproton annihilation, it is necessary to correct the acquired charge for ion recombination effects. [...]

Biological effectiveness of antiproton annihilation / Holzscheiter, Michael H. (Pbar Medical, Newport Beach) ; Agazaryan, Nzhde (UCLA, Los Angeles (main)) ; Bassler, Niels (Aarhus U. (UCLA, Los Angeles (main)) ; Knudsen, Helge V. (Aarhus U. (main)) ; Landua, Rolf (CERN) et al.
We describe an experiment designed to determine whether or not the densely ionizing particles emanating from the annihilation of antiprotons produce an increase in “biological dose” in the vicinity of the narrow Bragg peak for antiprotons compared to protons. This experiment is the first direct measurement of the biological effects of antiproton annihilation. [...]

Experimental investigation of the Landau-Pomeranchuk-Migdal effect in low-Z targets / Andersen, K.K. (Aarhus U.) ; Andersen, S.L. (Aarhus U.) ; Esberg, J. (CERN) ; Knudsen, H. (Vrije U., Amsterdam) /CERN NA63 Collaboration
In the CERN NA63 collaboration we have addressed the question of the potential inadequacy of the commonly used Migdal formulation of the Landau-Pomeranchuk-Migdal (LPM) effect by measuring the photon emission by 20 and 178 GeV electrons in the range 100 MeV - 4 GeV, in targets of LowDensityPolyEthylene (LDPE), C, Al, Ti, Fe, Cu, Mo and, as a reference target, Ta. For each target and energy, a comparison between simulated values based on the LPM suppression of incoherent bremsstrahlung is shown, taking multi-photon effects into account. [...]

Direct measurement of the formation length of photons / Andersen, Kristoffer K (Aarhus U.) ; Andersen, Søren L (Aarhus U.) ; Esberg, Jakob (Aarhus U.) ; Knudsen, Helge (Aarhus U.) ; Mikkelsen, Rune (Aarhus U.) ; Uggerhøj, Ulrik I (Aarhus U.) ; Sona, Pietro (Florence U.) ; Mangiarotti, Alessio (Coimbra U.) ; Ketel, Tjeerd J (Vrije U., Amsterdam) ; Ballestrero, Sergio (Johannesburg U.) /CERN NA63 Collaboration
We report the first observation of a shoulder in the radiation spectrum from GeV electrons in a structured target consisting of two thin and closely spaced foils. The position of the shoulder depends on the target spacing and is directly connected to the finite formation length of a low-energy photon emitted by an ultrarelativistic electron. [...]
